woodturning vase of padouk and blue epoxy resin
I made a vase from padouk and blue epoxy resin, but it actually did not become a real vase because I hollowed it out shallowly.
This is a project I started three years ago and only recently completed.
After I had poured the epoxy resin between the wood and allowed it to harden, I sawed off the excess material and started turning it.
At first everything went well, turning the outside and finishing was no problem, but during the hollowing process something went wrong, the tenon broke off even though I had used a steadyrest.
I recently decided to give it another try and managed to complete the vase.
Because the epoxy has become rock hard after three years of hardening, I hollowed out the vase sha...

woodturning coring spalted birch bowls
Просмотров 1 тыс.День назад
Last winter, I cored a piece of spalted birch trunk and then set the bowls aside to dry. In fact, this is the first time I have used my oneway coring system other than a test piece I recently mounted the bowls back on the lathe and turned them for the second time. First I turned tenons on the bowls and then I attached the bowls to the chuck with the tenon and turned and finished the bowls. Afte...

Woodturning and metalturning, an ashtray made of yew and aluminum for Father's Day
Просмотров 17121 день назад
I made a large ashtray out of yew and aluminum for Father's Day. Since today is Father's Day in the Netherlands, I thought it would be appropriate to release this video today because I made it together with my father. I first turned a piece of aluminum for the inside of the ashtray under my dad's supervision on his metal lathe. I have the theoretical knowledge but no practical experience at all...
woodturning a larch bowl treated with dye
Просмотров 201Месяц назад
I made a bowl out of a piece of larch and treated it with dye. When I was making the bowl I noticed that the color wasn't anything special so I decided to dye the bowl to give it something extra. So after turning and sanding, I diluted a little bit of dye with water and treated the bowl with it. When the dye had dried, I sanded the bowl and treated it with a layer of sealer. woodturning a square platter made of padouk, linden and oak
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.Месяц назад
I made a square platter on my lathe from padouk, linden and oak. I first sawed the padouk block in half and sawn both halves diagonally, then I glued the linden slats onto the padauk triangles. When the glue had hardened, I sawed the triangles off at right angles and then glued them to the oak centerpiece. When the glue has hardened, I mount a faceplate to the wood and attach it to the lathe an...

Woodturning a bowl made of partially decayed wood and epoxy resin

I made a bowl from partially decayed wood and epoxy resin. 3 years ago I attached a partially rotten piece of wood to a piece of plywood and roughly made a bowl blank out of it and set it aside to dry. I had actually forgotten that I still had this, but when I came across it again, I mounted it on the lathe and made a bowl out of it with some epoxy resin. After pouring the epoxy, I removed the ...
woodturning an ash bowl decorated with a wire burner

I made a bowl from a piece of ash and decorated it with a wire burner. I used an ash wood bowl blank that I previously sawed and treated with sealer and set aside to dry. After turning the bowl, I used a wire burner to burn two grooves in it. I finished the bowl with 3 coats of sealer and then sanded to 600 grit. The bowl has a diameter of 29 centimeters and is 10 centimeters high.

Woodturning a yew with epoxy bowl

I made a bowl from a piece of yew and epoxy resin. Because it was cold, I heated the epoxy resin, but a load of epoxy resin solidified during the casting and therefore did not end up in the mold. After the epoxy resin had hardened, and I had sawed off the protruding epoxy resin, I turned it into a bowl. I finished the bowl with two coats of sealer, sanded it to 600 grit and then used friction p...
woodturning a twice turned conifer bowl treated with turpentine wax

I made a bowl from a piece of conifer wood and stained it with Merkelbach extra oxblood turpentine wax. I had previously turned the bowl and treated it with wood glue and set it aside to dry. Due to drying, the bowl had become distorted and two dry cracks had appeared. So first I mounted the bowl on the lathe and turned it flat and round again and treated the cracks with CA glue. Spectacular!
Very unusual Hans but I really do like it. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Very original. I like what you did here.
Beautiful
The only thing i do not like about epoxy is i cannot mix wood shaving with garden composting
Wow, a very nice piece, Hans! The combinationof the padouk and resin really stands out! Great work, Cheers, __Frank
This is a super unique piece and very well executed. Great work!
Are you glad you gave it a second try Hans ? I am ! Love the colors and the tilt. The fiddly layup of all the blank sure paid off too ! Take care. -Mike
This is a long time in the making Hans and it's something I have not seen before. A leaning vase, very unique and a beautiful piece 👌
1st😂 I'm away so will watch in a few days
Nice work man
Another great project, Hans. You keep impressing me! Not only by the craftsmanship but also by your equipment and tools. The other day I saw your metal lathe and now the Oneway core tool! Cool stuff!
Beautiful spaltting! Nice work!
Nice work
Great to see you also have the OneWay coring tools. Works fine on the MAXI-1.
Thank you Leo, yes it works fine on this lathe, I recently cored a load of cherry wood so I have plenty to do this winter too
Beautiful spalting! I too have the oneway and the corepro cutter (expensive but a game changer) good job
Beautiful Piece, thanks for sharing.
Hello Allen, thank you for watching my video and your reply
That was a lot work but it looks awesome n❤️👍
Hello William Yes, it was a lot of work, but it was worth it, thank you for watching my video and your reply
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
Hello Jeremy, thank you for watching my video and your reply
Hi Hans, Beautiful piece of ash, beautiful shape and a beautiful finish. Great work my friend. Take care Hans. Cheers, Huw
Thank you Huw, it is always pleasant to work with ash, it produces a beautiful result
Lovely bowl Hans, just how I like them. Especially like crotch pieces. Take care. -Mike
Thanks Mike, although it is usually more challenging to turn crotch pieces, but it gives a great result
I'm actually hoping to find some ash logs around here so I can do more with it. Just did an ash bowl with dye and embellinshing wax. This thing looks way better than mine. Good job!
Hello Chris, yes some types of wood are not widely available everywhere, but I am quite sure that where you live there are types of wood easily available to you that I envy, you have to make the best of what you have
Great piece od Ash, nice & shiny finish. Well done Hans! 😎
Hello, thank you for watching my video and your reply
I have to try that one day!
My, that sure can take some punishment ! Nice blend of materials Hans. Take care. -Mike
Thank you Mike, yes, and it will take quite a few cigars to fill this bad boy up.
What a neat project between you and your Dad. I wish my father is still around, so lucky you still have your old man. Enjoy and cherish your time with him. Happy fathers Day my friend ❤️
Hello Jojo, thank you for watching my video and your reply, yes I am happy that my dad is still here and that we can do things together, sorry to hear that your father is no longer with you
Mooi hout, leuk de samenwerking samen met pa voor vaderdag
Dank je wel Marja, het was zeker een leuk project om te maken
Very beautiful piece. I really like the shape. Thank you for sharing, I hope you have a wonderful day.
I love the finish on this. I need to get some of that gilding polish. I’ve seen gold embellishing wax from Hampshire Sheen - do you think that is the same type of thing?
Hello Ben, I think those two products are similar so they should work, but it works best on a type of wood with an open structure, so I used ash and opened the grain even further with a copper brush so that more gold-colored wax remains in the grain. Cheers, Hans Stay safe and keep turning
@@hbwoodturning17 thank you. Good tip about opening up the grain, thanks 👍🏻
@@BensGotWood And I have one more tip for you Ben, be sure that there are absolutely no tool marks visible because you are also accentuating all imperfections in your workpiece
@@hbwoodturning17 that makes sense! Might limit what I can use it on then 😂
@@BensGotWood or lots of sanding ☹
Hi Hans. I wasn't too sure about the green until I saw the final closeup footage. Really nice effect. You come up with some great ways to make lovely items. Thanks for the inspiration 🙂, Gareth.
Thank you, yes I didn't think the color of the wood was anything special, but it did have a very nice grain, but it was barely visible, so I tried to accentuate the grain with a little dye.
Fantastic and stunningly beautiful
Hello Kobie, thank you for watching my video and your reply, yes it was quite a challenge to make this, but it was totally worth it Are you Dutch or of Dutch descent?
Outstanding piece Hans. Thank you for sharing
Hello Clint, thank you for watching my video and your reply, yes it has become a special platter, gluing and clamping those slanted pieces was a challenge
Awesome Piece, thanks for sharing. Full View and Like 👍
Hello Allen, thank you for watching my video and your reply, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Never seen Larch - alive or as lumber - here in the US. I see it is a very soft hardwood. You gave, and it took the color well. Good job Hans ! Take care. -Mike
Thank you Mike, you may have seen a larch, it looks very much like Douglas fir, it is slightly more yellowish than Douglas fir, and it is often confused with each other.
@@hbwoodturning17 That explains it - "confused" is my middle name 🤪😵
Very nice, i wish my lathe was as quiet as yours.
Thank you, yes my lathe doesn't make much noise, in my videos you hear my JSP powercap louder than the lathe
Great finish, really wakes the ash up!
Thank you, in fact it is a simple process but the result is amazing
@hbwoodturning17 right, I've seen it done similar but the ash was burned, brushed and then gilding cream applied. I like your spray technique, less fire in the shop lol! Great work, great thumbnail too by the way, I clicked instantly when I saw it.
Excellent!!!!!! Full view Like and Sbd.....that wire brass did a good job:):) All the best Yiannis (Athens Greece) P.S. Do you get any catches while using the carbide tipped tools? I get quite a few:):)
Hello Yiannis, thank you for watching my video and your reply, no, I don't get catches very often with carbide tools, do you use regular carbide inserts or negative rake inserts? I noticed that you often use olive wood, which is quite hard, and for that you can also use negative rake inserts, which are also better for epoxy resin.
@@hbwoodturning17 Thank you Hans you are right olive is hard wood especially the root, my carbide inserts are not negative rake..anyway turn and learn..:):) All the best Yiannis
What is your thickness of the blank? And what angle are you using?
Hello Norbert, thank you for watching my video and your reply, the blank I use is 46 mm thick, the angle I use varies between approximately 35 and 55 degrees, I made the bottom ring the smallest angle and the top ring the largest angle. Because I have varied the angles in this way, the bowl gives a trumpet shape, which I find more attractive than a cone shape, the disadvantage is that I can make fewer rings from it, and another disadvantage is that you have to go much deeper with the parting tool.
Beautiful Piece and interesting process. Full View and Like 👍
Hello Allen, thank you for watching my video and your reply
Thanks for sharing. Returning Support with Full View and Like.. Great work. I'm working on a baby Economy bowl now.. My little lathe could barely cut through my board so I ended up just having one cut lol..
Hello Allen, thank you for watching my video and your reply, if you have a bandsaw you can also saw the half rings and glue them together to create an economy bowl.
I hate square platters and bowls, EXCEPT this one. It’s simple and beautifully designed. Very nice!
Hello, I'm glad you like it, I make square platters because I waste less wood to make something round from a square piece
@@hbwoodturning17 understandable. It’s just my crooked eyes aesthetic.
Good job my friend 👍🇵🇹
Hello, thank you my friend, and thank you for watching my video and your reply

Hello, thank you for watching my video and your reply

Thank you, Mike, I'm glad you like it, it was still quite a job to saw and glue everything, but I'm happy with the result
Mooi geworden (ook al is het niet helemaal zoals je vooraf bedacht had)
Dank je wel Marja nee, het gaat niet altijd als gepland, maar dan probeer ik er toch wat van te maken en ik ben blij dat je het leuk vindt.

Thank you Rav, well I still have some projects in progress, but I'm already thinking about future projects (if I can find the time to make them)
@@hbwoodturning17 I have the same issue - lack of time...or I'm getting older, slower, powerless, eh🤷 but still producing new items 💪
Very nice work you do. Could you please tell me where you got that awesome tee shirt?
Hello Patrick, thank you for watching my video and your reply. I got this T-shirt and a number of others that I usually wear from the Etsy webshop
What a great finishing technique. Well done.
Something still on my to do list. Have to look for that ebonizing laquier. Turned out really nice!
Hello Chris, thank you for watching my video and your reply, basically ebonizing lacquer is a fancy name for matte black paint so that is easier to obtain, on the other hand the gilt cream is more difficult to obtain.
@hbwoodturning17 I actually have some gilt cream, we'll more like embellish wax/paste, but you are supposed to get the same result.
@@chrisgiftshop3127 Hey Chris, according to my experience, embellishing wax has a somewhat thicker consistency, so you have to work a bit harder for the result 😉😉
@@hbwoodturning17 well then I'll have to see if I can find other colors of gilt cream. Thanks again!
Looking back is there anything you would do differently on the next bowl?
Hello Robert, sorry for my late response, but next time I would definitely tape my chuck better before applying the stone effect. Weeks later, there was still some residue left in the mechanism that made it difficult to use.
