Woodturning a black and gold ash bowl

- I made a bowl out of a piece of ash wood.
After I turned the bowl, I opened the grain with a brass wire brush and then treated it with ebonising lacquer and then with gilt cream gold.
When the gilt cream had dried, I buffed it until it shined.
The bowl has a diameter of 24 centimeters and is 10 centimeters high Кино
Learnt a couple new techniques to try. The wire brush peaked my interest. Thanks!
Hello, thank you for watching my video and your reply.
Good to hear you learned something from my video.
Hi Hans...
That's a real beauty... nicely done...
Take care...All the best.....Andy
Hello Andy, thank you for watching my video and your reply.
Yes it turned out to be a nice project, this is a method I had not used before so it was learning while making it.
Great finish, really wakes the ash up!
Thank you, in fact it is a simple process but the result is amazing
@hbwoodturning17 right, I've seen it done similar but the ash was burned, brushed and then gilding cream applied. I like your spray technique, less fire in the shop lol! Great work, great thumbnail too by the way, I clicked instantly when I saw it.
Nothing special in the crafting of a bowl, but hat finish is absolutely f’ing beautiful. Very nice in wood and finish choice. Just beautiful.
Hello, and thank you for watching my video and your reply.
No, making the bowl wax was nothing special, but applying the layer with the gold-colored wax and seeing that pattern appear was spectacular.
@@hbwoodturning17 agreed, and I’m an honest butthole to detriment sometimes. Just beautiful.
Super idea - I'm going to use it
Hello Phil, thank you for watching my video and responding. 😊
Well, you are free to use this method, I didn't think of this myself, I saw this at chestnut products (and those are also the products I used 🤔)
@@hbwoodturning17 Thanks
What a great finishing technique. Well done.
Like Rav says "Amazing" ! May I add Stunning too ? Keep them coming Hans. Take care. -Mike
Hey Mike, yes, you can do that. 😊
Yes, the projects keep coming, I still have some projects in progress, and something different than usual planned for next week 😃
Something still on my to do list. Have to look for that ebonizing laquier. Turned out really nice!
Hello Chris, thank you for watching my video and your reply, basically ebonizing lacquer is a fancy name for matte black paint so that is easier to obtain, on the other hand the gilt cream is more difficult to obtain.
@hbwoodturning17 I actually have some gilt cream, we'll more like embellish wax/paste, but you are supposed to get the same result.
@@chrisgiftshop3127 Hey Chris, according to my experience, embellishing wax has a somewhat thicker consistency, so you have to work a bit harder for the result 😉😉
@@hbwoodturning17 well then I'll have to see if I can find other colors of gilt cream. Thanks again!
You are the Rust Oleum King!
Hello Sam, thank you for watching my video and your reply, well it's not rustoleum, but it's close
Really nice work again Hans! 😎
Thank you Leo, yes this project turned out well.
I have to try that one day!
Love that Hans. Such a cool effect 😊
Thank you, yes it gives a nice effect, and it is actually quite simple to make.
Beautiful piece and interesting process. Full view and Like 👍
Hello Allen, thank you for watching my video and your response.
Beautiful piece Hans.
Thanks Clint, it was a fun project to make.
Wow Hans, It's beautiful!
Thank you Jojo, it's amazing to see how the colors came to life when i applied the gold-colored wax. I was amazed myself
Amazing effect, Hans 👌💪👏
Thank you Rav, yes it is an amazing effect but actually easy to make
Mooi die kleuren zo, heel mooi effect dat al die groei kringen zo goed uitkomen.
Dank je wel Marja, dat waardeer ik.
Excellent!!!!!! Full view Like and Sbd.....that wire brass did a good job:):)
All the best

P.S. Do you get any catches while using the carbide tipped tools? I get quite a few:):)
Hello Yiannis, thank you for watching my video and your reply, no, I don't get catches very often with carbide tools, do you use regular carbide inserts or negative rake inserts?
I noticed that you often use olive wood, which is quite hard, and for that you can also use negative rake inserts, which are also better for epoxy resin.
@@hbwoodturning17 Thank you Hans you are right olive is hard wood especially the root, my carbide inserts are not negative rake..anyway turn and learn..:):)
All the best
Yiannis
Like the finish, nice piece. Why didn’t you turn the center piece away?
Hello John, thank you for watching my video and your reply.
Actually, that has become a habit of mine, I turned away the centerpiece with an easy wood turn hollower, but because I didn't have any sharp carbides for this at one time, I sawed it away, and I now do that on many projects. Cheers, Hans
Stay safe and keep turning
Beautiful piece interesting finish. May I ask what opening the grain does? Allow the lacquer to soak in better?
Hello Chip, when opening the grain, you remove softer parts between the growth rings, which gives you deeper grooves in which more wax remains, giving you more contrast between the different colors.
Hi Hand, love the bowl and am very interested in the colouring. Can I ask what brand of gilt cream gold you are using. I’ve found 2 brands in the internet but unsure which one to buy. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Hello Jenny, thank you for watching my video and your response.
I used chestnut products for this project and the instructional video for some guidance.
Cheers from the Netherlands.
Trotzdem gut gemacht 👍
Did you eventually spray it with lacquer?
Hello Robert, thank you for watching my video and your reply, I treated the bowl with chestnut woodwax 22 and then polished it to protect and give it a shine
I love the finish on this. I need to get some of that gilding polish. I’ve seen gold embellishing wax from Hampshire Sheen - do you think that is the same type of thing?
Hello Ben, I think those two products are similar so they should work, but it works best on a type of wood with an open structure, so I used ash and opened the grain even further with a copper brush so that more gold-colored wax remains in the grain. Cheers, Hans
Stay safe and keep turning
@@hbwoodturning17 thank you. Good tip about opening up the grain, thanks 👍🏻
@@BensGotWood And I have one more tip for you Ben, be sure that there are absolutely no tool marks visible because you are also accentuating all imperfections in your workpiece
@@hbwoodturning17 that makes sense! Might limit what I can use it on then 😂
@@BensGotWood or lots of sanding ☹
Perfect 👏👏👏🇧🇷🇧🇷
Thank you, I'm glad you like it.
