- I made a bowl from partially decayed wood and epoxy resin.
3 years ago I attached a partially rotten piece of wood to a piece of plywood and roughly made a bowl blank out of it and set it aside to dry.
I had actually forgotten that I still had this, but when I came across it again, I mounted it on the lathe and made a bowl out of it with some epoxy resin.
After pouring the epoxy, I removed the air from the wood in a vacuum chamber. The decayed wood has absorbed more epoxy resin than I expected, so the bowl became lower than I expected.
It was a challenging project to turn, the unaffected wood was very hard, and the pieces of decayed wood very soft because the epoxy resin had not completely saturated everything.
I finished the bowl with friction polish.
The bowl has a diameter of 25 centimeters and is 10 centimeters high.
Great colors for that wood Hans. No, I take that back ... the colors are perfect !! Take care. -Mike
Thank you Mike, I am also surprised by the colors, especially that the decayed wood has still remained black despite the red epoxy that I used. Thank you Mike, I am also surprised by the colors, especially that the decayed wood has still remained black despite the red epoxy that I used.👍
Mooie kleur acryl en mooie werking van het hout.
Dank je wel Marja, het is een mooi kleur combinatie geworden, het vergane hout is ondanks alle rode kleur toch zwart gebleven.
Looks really beautiful Hans. I like the red swirling resin and the dark color of the wood. Well done 👌
Thank you Jojo, I was surprised that there were swirls in the epoxy.
I had it in the vacuum chamber for a long time.
It had already started to solidify when I removed the vacuum.
Beautiful work as ever Hans.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
