    Hey, Jim. I'm visiting from the future (Oct. 2023). I'll bet when you were doing this you never expected Resin work to become the thing you are famous for!! It's fascinating to see & hear the problems you faced back then, and to know how well you have overcome them these days. As you often say, while you by no means know EVERYTHING there is to know about resin, you have a very thorough working knowledge of what it takes to produce a perfect, almost flawless bowl, hollowform or bowl set using epoxy resin. Your progress in only TWO YEARS is phenomenal!! It's hardly surprising that you have now surpassed the 100k subscription mark!

I watched "The Ocean Cave Vase" yesterday, sent it to a friend, and "The Boxelder Burl Coral Bowl" today and I assumed "He must have been doing this for decades!" God has really gifted you! And it's so wonderfully obvious that you love what you do! Maybe one day I can afford a beautiful creation made by you! ^_^ Until then, I will enjoy binging all of your videos. Not that I know a thing about turning resin or wood, I just find it a relaxing escape from my stressful life. To that end, I thank you! Nice bowl Jim! I use N/C lacquer all the time in my piano business. With lacquer finish you have to build up the finish first. Then let the lacquer cure for a 2-3 weeks. If you don't let it cure it will just gum up the sandpaper. Then rub out the lacquer with 280, 320, 400 with a good quality mineral spirits using a spray bottle for the mineral spirits. This levels the finish out and gets rid of all the unwanted marks. Just make sure you don't rub through the finish. Then buff and you will have a real nice lacquer finish.

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning  3 года назад

      Interesting, how many coats do you put on? I’m surprised that you start at such a low grit, I would of thought 400 would of been the lowest you would start at, thanks for the info, Jim.

    • @kevinellis9150
      @kevinellis9150 3 года назад

      @@SpragueWoodturning 6 to 8 coats but you have to get build up of finish before you start rubbing the finish out. if you started with a higher grit you would be there for ever rubbing out a finish.They have been doing finished on pianos like this for the past 80 years.

    There are charts that relate temperature to curing time for epoxy. By raising the temperature from 20 degrees celsius to 30 degree celsius epoxy cures twice as fast. Another way epoxy is used to treat wood is by using a vacuum tank that saturates every little crack and crevis and deletes all air bubbles. This bowl looks great.

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning  3 года назад

      I actually debated putting this in the vacuum chamber before the pressure pot for a few minutes to get the epoxy into areas that it might not of gotten too. Thanks for the info, Jim.

    I think that's ONE of the prettiest bowls I have ever seen you make Jim.. It's a stunner..! I use a plastic hammer around the side of the bowl before doing the same to the bottom, but don't hit it too hard or it'll cause the resin to crack, just tap,tap,tap... I think you may have had some sticking on the sides, and if you use a translucent container you can actually see where it's still adhering. Nice work.

    Hi Jim....this is a project with a lot of unique and artistic convergences. That burl alone would probably not have had enough integrity to withstand hand gouging; but, with the epoxy's permeation (especially throughout the burl's weak spots) provided more than enough solidity for you to do what you do best....turn a real gem! Best to you and be well......eh!

    I like using abrasive pastes. I make my own using Kim's recipe. The bowl came out nice and it looks like the resin did a really good job with the cracks. The foamy punky resin that was on the top at least from I have found with Aluminite is a moisture problem, everything from needing a moisture trap on the air compressor to the material being cast not dry enough.

    Jim, I do a lot of epoxy resin and have found that using Triple-E after sanding to 1,000 -2,000 and then rattle can lacquer or poly works real well. Be sure to get as much of the wax off from the Triple-E as possible as I believe the wax residue makes runs/sags more likely.

    • @SpragueWoodturning

    • @pennsymac
      @pennsymac 3 года назад

      @@SpragueWoodturning no Sir, I've never used solvent. Merely use as soft a paper towel as possible to polish at a reasonably high speed. This removes wax as it polishes. I do both 100% resin and with wood attached, but not as your epoxy embedded bowl.

    Great job! I've only been doing epoxy/wood bowls for a few months now, but I'll share a couple of things for you to ponder... First, I always open the pressure pot after 2-3 hours to see if the epoxy has soaked in to enough places that I need to add more. I'm using Total Boat Thick Set which is really slow, so I can add more if I have some left over, or mix more if I need to. Most of the time I need to add 10-15% due to it soaking into all the cracks and voids. Then after the top-off, boost the pressure and let it sit overnight. Second, epoxy is much harder than the wood. So you have to take extra care to remove the small surface scratches left from tooling. Very close inspection is needed in the early sanding steps. Sanding sealer is helpful too, but careful attention to the surface of the epoxy has helped me eliminate those from my finished pieces. I don't think the epoxy is going to react chemically with any finish after the epoxy is fully cured, which can take several more days after it's hard. Keep those great videos coming!

      Thanks Russ, that’s a great tip about opening the pot to check on the resin level, this epoxy has a long work time so it should be a problem either. I really pay close attention to my sanding and can say without a doubt the surface was sanded well. The weird thing is when it was wet it looked perfect, then when it dried the streaks magically appeared, very frustrating! Thanks again for the tips, Jim.

    I love to pour resin into cracks and hollows. You can never tell where it's gonna end up. Sometimes when I end up with only one tiny little streak of colored resin in a bowl, people almost miss it. Then they do a double-take. Then look a little closer. Then ask either 'how did you put that there' or 'why did you put that there'. I get a kick out of that.

    That Was a good video and the bowl looks great. I used to watch Canadian Woodworks on You Tube, and the used an epoxy from Quebec that really flowed well to fill the voids. I know Paul had to make sure the temp was right as it cured, and it was pretty well set in 24 hrs. That was on tables and other flat stuff. They do sell the epoxy thru them and the finish they use that did not streak like that. I don't have any affiliation with him I just watched his channel.

    The bowl looks great but it seems that with all the hundreds (or thousands) of colors, bright blue is used so many times and I don't think it even compliments the wood at all. Maybe try some metallic colors (bronze, copper, black, graphite, aged gold, bright gold, antique gold, etc etc) which I think will all compliment the wood and they are more "natural colors that would be found in nature. I look forward to the next few bowls when you put the neon blue on the shelf for a while. : )

    Nice burl bowl! Like another viewer i have the same concern for plastic. I have done resin casting using Alumilite with different dyes, pigments and powders. I will do more if i can capture the microfine airborne plastics and reuse the shavings so waste is minimal. Your first resin bowl is a beaut! I bet if the resin had been cured to a hardened state it would have come out of the container more easily, especially since you used mold release.

    Love the swirls and if you look very carefully you can see a spec or two of gold :) Use a negitive rake to prevent chip out. Try McGuires plastix polish for the last sanding this will take out the streeks (find it at CT automotive section) and your a very lucky man to have burl. I just moved to Thunder Bay and finding it very difficult to secure good Hardwood. Keep up the great videos Jim, and practise ,practise, practise :)

    Beautiful outcome the burl had a stunning grain. I don't turn so I'm not sure but I do use resins I think the streaks where tool marks they where very uniform and even. When you're sanding resin 400 grit just isn't fine enough. I would never put a finish on resin until at least 2000 grit. Maybe more with the steel tool marks. I don't think the wood bowl finish was reacting just making the streaks visible. Nice job as always though. Enjoyed the video.
