Hey, Jim. I'm visiting from the future (Oct. 2023). I'll bet when you were doing this you never expected Resin work to become the thing you are famous for!! It's fascinating to see & hear the problems you faced back then, and to know how well you have overcome them these days. As you often say, while you by no means know EVERYTHING there is to know about resin, you have a very thorough working knowledge of what it takes to produce a perfect, almost flawless bowl, hollowform or bowl set using epoxy resin. Your progress in only TWO YEARS is phenomenal!! It's hardly surprising that you have now surpassed the 100k subscription mark!
Same here. Found this video Oct. 19, 2023 and thought something like: "Wow, he started doing this only 3 years ago - and look what masterpieces he has created since!" As always I am in awe! 🙏👏
Me too! Coming at you from 2024! ^_^ I just found you yesterday! I watched "The Ocean Cave Vase" yesterday, sent it to a friend, and "The Boxelder Burl Coral Bowl" today and I assumed "He must have been doing this for decades!" God has really gifted you! And it's so wonderfully obvious that you love what you do! Maybe one day I can afford a beautiful creation made by you! ^_^ Until then, I will enjoy binging all of your videos. Have a blessed day! ^_^
You're a unique genius to choose such a unique combination. I'm excited to see what you are going to do with this. Today, you are a Master at resin casting. Did you ever guess that you would become so advanced? 😎
Dang that's gorgeous!! I figured it out. 1. The guy who doesn't care 2. The guy who does an ok job 3. The guy who does awesome work 4. The guy who is a perfectionist 5. Then there is Mr Jim Sprague!!! A god!!
You pressed the record button and unlike most wannabe RUclipsrs like me, you have grown remarkably fast. This is impressive. Thank you for your inspiration.
I love the pure honesty in all of your videos. We all learn through trial and error. In the words of Thomas Edison - "I didn't fail 1000 times, I just found 1000 ways it didn't work". Your skill is undeniable and its great to see you expanding and reaching into something out of your comfort zone. And in the end the bowl looks incredible!
What an absolute treat to see your first resin piece! I have watched you turn some of the most beautiful resin pieces I've ever seen in the time since you made this video! Not that I know a thing about turning resin or wood, I just find it a relaxing escape from my stressful life. To that end, I thank you! I love that you still maintain the same humble personality today, you make me laugh, I love your channel!! Its an inspiration that you have become such a master artist of your craft in 3 short years. This might be my favorite video!
Yay!!! Resin time. Thanks so much. I want to thank you and all the other talented people making RUclips videos. Due to health issues I’m house bound and watching your videos help with the depression. It’s so generous of all of you to share your time and efforts with all of us. And seeing the respect all of you woodworkers have for each other really makes my day. 🥰🙌🥰
Well put! I too have health issues that keep me cooped up indoors for large parts of the day. These people who produce all this content for those of us who, for whatever reason, are stuck indoors really help to keep me from going completely insane. As you say, the immobility is depressing, but while I can live vicariously through others I can keep it at bay. I'm fortunate to have a very understanding wife who also keeps my spirits up!
My first comment is I appreciate your admiration for other turners. I've seen their art and also respect them. Second, I'm very impressed with your inlays. I kept picturing this bowl with an edge inlay with the blue resin. I have no idea how it would work, but I'm thinking your imagination would make it work. Third, the enthusiasm in your voice showed how much you enjoyed playing with resin. Fourth point is that is one beautiful bowl. Keep up these great videos.
Boy, with this being you're first one, just imagine the beautiful pieces you're going to be able to come up with! Absolutely beautiful. Take care & God Bless!!!
I have thanks to watching your work turned resin bowls and I get the feeling you get when you put a finished bowl in your hand. Just wish I had a lathe that could do bowls that size, I do have a lot of waste! Beautiful bowl, again thank you.
The bowl looks great but it seems that with all the hundreds (or thousands) of colors, bright blue is used so many times and I don't think it even compliments the wood at all. Maybe try some metallic colors (bronze, copper, black, graphite, aged gold, bright gold, antique gold, etc etc) which I think will all compliment the wood and they are more "natural colors that would be found in nature. I look forward to the next few bowls when you put the neon blue on the shelf for a while. : )
THANK YOU for your video. As a newbie, its FINALLY nice to see the trials and tribulations of what us mere mortals go through. So many videos are PRO's and leave some of us having more questions than when we started with. Great Job.
Wowza! That is an amazing resin bowl, and to think this is your first one! Great job! I’m appreciative for your voiceover letting us know what you are doing and why. It’s a learning experience for me! Great job! Bravo!
Still my favorite of the bowls you have made, The blue resin perfectly highlights the beautiful grain of the maple burl without overwhelming it. And it was your first of many other good ones.
Nice bowl Jim! I use N/C lacquer all the time in my piano business. With lacquer finish you have to build up the finish first. Then let the lacquer cure for a 2-3 weeks. If you don't let it cure it will just gum up the sandpaper. Then rub out the lacquer with 280, 320, 400 with a good quality mineral spirits using a spray bottle for the mineral spirits. This levels the finish out and gets rid of all the unwanted marks. Just make sure you don't rub through the finish. Then buff and you will have a real nice lacquer finish.
Interesting, how many coats do you put on? I’m surprised that you start at such a low grit, I would of thought 400 would of been the lowest you would start at, thanks for the info, Jim.
@@SpragueWoodturning 6 to 8 coats but you have to get build up of finish before you start rubbing the finish out. if you started with a higher grit you would be there for ever rubbing out a finish. They have been doing finished on pianos like this for the past 80 years.
Hi Jim....this is a project with a lot of unique and artistic convergences. That burl alone would probably not have had enough integrity to withstand hand gouging; but, with the epoxy's permeation (especially throughout the burl's weak spots) provided more than enough solidity for you to do what you do best....turn a real gem! Best to you and be well......eh!
One of the benefits of doing resin work is I can now save the pieces that were no longer save able and burned in the wood stove! As always, thanks for your kind comments! Stay safe... eh
I think that's ONE of the prettiest bowls I have ever seen you make Jim.. It's a stunner..! I use a plastic hammer around the side of the bowl before doing the same to the bottom, but don't hit it too hard or it'll cause the resin to crack, just tap,tap,tap... I think you may have had some sticking on the sides, and if you use a translucent container you can actually see where it's still adhering. Nice work.
Beautiful bowl! I enjoyed watching you use the resin for the first time. That marble blue with the little bit of gold was a good choice for the colors with what looks like a marbled wood. I don't know too much about the different types of trees and their wood properties. I wish I could look at the wood and know what it is, I will need to study to learn it... that will be my next mission. Your work is amazing! And I will own one of your bowls someday. Thanks for this video!
Been watching your videos for a bit now and finally just went back and watched you very first wood/resin bowl. You sure have come a long way since that first one. Still great job and it looks great.
A great video for the first resin bowl. I like the teaching format you use, I think it's great. Love the bit trying to get it out of the bucket. 😃😃 The burl is stunning, A great work of art sir. The blue is outstanding, first class job. And the first resin bowl, wow fantastic. It's a beautiful piece sir. 🌿 👍👍👍👍👍
Just returned from vacation and am catching up on a few weeks …. Love this project! And I’m a bourbon girl who can’t wait to check out the bourbon guys! Another great project, Jim!
Congratulation! For the very first use of resin, the result is beautiful. Experience comes from experience, and you learn from mistakes. So everything was done right.
Hi Jim I enjoyed the step by step of you doing the resin it's very interesting and the colours are awesome and the bowl looks fabulous. The wood is full of character with beautiful grain and the colours of the wood. Thanks for a great video Amandaxx
We learned all we know from YT, and are so thankful that this forum exists. This is a beautiful bowl, would never guess it to be your first wood & resin, you did great!
Ah yes, the struggles of getting resin out of a mould! I know the pain! I absolutely love the colours, love the bowl, love how you share your learning experiences. Well done on a beautiful job. 😊😊
I'll keep watching to see if you address this, the cause of those finish lines; but none the less awesome burl and resin selection and work. Thanks Jim
I have a suggestion for getting your resin out of the bucket. If you could rig a jack that can be jacked downward, gently, it might be easier to get it out. Good luck.
This is so representative of my process most of the time as I'm learning - trial and error, exploring methods, frustrations. Thanks for sharing the whole ordeal, not just what works.
I had this problem once and before buffing with white diamond, I polished with 0000 steel wool. Seemed to work. Anyway, I am thankful for your videos. I too am contemplating epoxy. Was just given a pressure pot. You give me hope :)
Great job! I've only been doing epoxy/wood bowls for a few months now, but I'll share a couple of things for you to ponder... First, I always open the pressure pot after 2-3 hours to see if the epoxy has soaked in to enough places that I need to add more. I'm using Total Boat Thick Set which is really slow, so I can add more if I have some left over, or mix more if I need to. Most of the time I need to add 10-15% due to it soaking into all the cracks and voids. Then after the top-off, boost the pressure and let it sit overnight. Second, epoxy is much harder than the wood. So you have to take extra care to remove the small surface scratches left from tooling. Very close inspection is needed in the early sanding steps. Sanding sealer is helpful too, but careful attention to the surface of the epoxy has helped me eliminate those from my finished pieces. I don't think the epoxy is going to react chemically with any finish after the epoxy is fully cured, which can take several more days after it's hard. Keep those great videos coming!
Thanks Russ, that’s a great tip about opening the pot to check on the resin level, this epoxy has a long work time so it should be a problem either. I really pay close attention to my sanding and can say without a doubt the surface was sanded well. The weird thing is when it was wet it looked perfect, then when it dried the streaks magically appeared, very frustrating! Thanks again for the tips, Jim.
This is where I want to be ... doing my first wood and resin bowl ... I've enjoyed your first experience and hope mine goes just as well ... the bowl looks fantastic 👍
I like using abrasive pastes. I make my own using Kim's recipe. The bowl came out nice and it looks like the resin did a really good job with the cracks. The foamy punky resin that was on the top at least from I have found with Aluminite is a moisture problem, everything from needing a moisture trap on the air compressor to the material being cast not dry enough.
I watched 5 resin bowl videos before this one. It's so interesting to see the beginning of your journey after seeing some of your absolute masterpieces. And I had to LOL when the Mold Release made its debut (I saw the maple crotch with silver black resin vid before this one). Thank you for sharing your experiences, including mistakes, in your videos. I look forward to the next one (after I binge on the existing)!
Hey Jim, I've never been brave enough to try epoxy but I might now. It does worry me how much plastic waste there is but we'll see with some careful moulding. Absolutely love this bowl, the combination of burl and epoxy is beautiful. Thank you.
Man you always prove me wrong! When I saw you pour the gold I though it was such an awful idea, but it blended so well with the wood! Love resin works, hope we'll get some more coming up while you learn how to work with it comfortably!
It’s gorgeous Jim. I learned a lot from you this morning! Good to know about the temperature requirements too. I wouldn’t have thought of that. Looking forward to your next project 👏👏

Glad you like them! Thanks

Great, I'll check them out! 👍
I had to laugh when you were trying to get that guy out... Reminding me of an otter trying to break open a shell... Man, I love that bowl...
The struggle is real, hahah. Thanks.
THANK YOU for your video. As a newbie, its FINALLY nice to see the trials and tribulations of what us mere mortals go through. So many videos are PRO's and leave some of us having more questions than when we started with. Great Job.

Thanks 😊
Unbelievable what a bowl. You made it look easy. Great job
Thanks Mac!
Eventually I’ll get there. I’m working up to a bowl of that caliber. My experience with resin is filling cracks and voids. Nice work

What a great Bowl. . . like looking at a whole new world! Love it!
Thanks for watching
I'm like you, I love the pearl. You can see alil gold tinting in it places, Wonderful accents. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful Work.
It’s definitely there in some spots, thanks.
Ah yes, the struggles of getting resin out of a mould! I know the pain! I absolutely love the colours, love the bowl, love how you share your learning experiences. Well done on a beautiful job. 😊😊
Thanks! It was a fun first project and still my favorite of them all!
I am glad you relented. The bowl looks tremendous!
Thanks 🙏
I'll keep watching to see if you address this, the cause of those finish lines; but none the less awesome burl and resin selection and work.
Thanks Jim
Be come a long way since then, lol. Thanks for watching
It's a pretty amazing piece. For first time with reisn.. Beautiful work 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
I have a suggestion for getting your resin out of the bucket. If you could rig a jack that can be jacked downward, gently, it might be easier to get it out. Good luck.
I now drill a hole in the bottom of the bucket and apply compressed air, it works great! Thanks
Good to see the start n how much progress has changed n how U do things differently except that mold release still a fight
It certainly can be, lol. Thanks
Very beautiful first resin project!! WELL DONE!
Thanks for sharing.
I’m happy with my results too, thanks 🙏
This is so representative of my process most of the time as I'm learning - trial and error, exploring methods, frustrations. Thanks for sharing the whole ordeal, not just what works.
It can be fun and it can be frustrating too, lol. Thanks.
Very nice , Jim! Especially for your first try with Resin!!
Thanks Charles!
Great start. Very informative. Keep um coming.
Thanks Leefy!

I tried a little bit of everything on this one, lol. Thanks
love it! The blue is beautiful..
Thanks 😊
I LOVE this bowl! Getting my shop warm enough is my problem too.
Thanks! One of theses days I should put in some sort of heating system but for now the offcuts heat my shop so it’s free heat.
So cool to find your very first resin bowl! You have come a long way. This bowl is beautiful! 11/20-6/23
You were a natural Burl/Epoxy turner from the beginning.
Thank you very much!
Great job! I've only been doing epoxy/wood bowls for a few months now, but I'll share a couple of things for you to ponder... Listening to the chipmunk curse while trying to get that out of the mold had me literally laughing out loud, my son thought I was nuts!
Silly me, I thought it would just slide right out, haha.
This is where I want to be ... doing my first wood and resin bowl ... I've enjoyed your first experience and hope mine goes just as well ... the bowl looks fantastic 👍
Best of luck! Thanks
great learning experience and really impressive work for your first resin bowl
Thanks 😊
For your 1st resin bowl, I love it. You did a spectacular job on this bowl! Blue is beautiful! Also my favorite color. Thanks, Jim!!!❤❤
Thanks for watching!
Well I would say that is a great job Jim. Beautiful Bowl with great colors.
Thanks 🙏
900 thumbs, not bad! Turned out very nicely.
Thanks 😊
Good job the heat is really important for casting resin
It sure is, lol.
It looks greatJim! I have never turned one and can't offer you any words of wisdom. Great job! Cheers, Paige C.
Thanks Paige!
It was definitely dry, been in my kiln for months. Wasn’t really an issue either, thanks!
Awesome, thanks for watching!
Absolutely beautiful. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks 🙏
Hey Jim, I've never been brave enough to try epoxy but I might now. It does worry me how much plastic waste there is but we'll see with some careful moulding. Absolutely love this bowl, the combination of burl and epoxy is beautiful. Thank you.
This stuff is supposed to be environmentally friendly, it has little to no smell to it either.
@@SpragueWoodturning Thank you.
Great first shot at casting... you hit the mark...pretty wood...stay safe...press on 😎
Thanks 🙏
Absolutely stunning!
Thanks 🙏
Man you always prove me wrong! When I saw you pour the gold I though it was such an awful idea, but it blended so well with the wood! Love resin works, hope we'll get some more coming up while you learn how to work with it comfortably!
Thanks! I’ve got one in the pressure pot as we speak, lol.
@@SpragueWoodturning I hope it's addictive to work with as it is to watch!
I can hardly believe it's only been a year. You are an amazing artist.
Thanks 😊
He is quite talented.
It’s gorgeous Jim. I learned a lot from you this morning! Good to know about the temperature requirements too. I wouldn’t have thought of that. Looking forward to your next project 👏👏
Thanks Jeanie, definitely an over site on my part!
Well that’s exactly how we learn right! You won’t do that again.....hopefully 😳
