What ever you create it’s a marvel to me. Again I watch your videos over and over and still impressed. I try very hard to do the same but there yet. Thank you for your wonderful well description/ presentation of your your work. Of course when you do it, it doesn’t look so difficult!! Ha!
That is a gorgeous bowl. Would not have expected poplar to turn so well and have such beauty. Thanks for great work. Really appreciate you looking at different finishes.
What an amazing box! The wood is gorgeous and your design and finish make it one gorgeous work of art! The bowls is yet another amazing work of art. What a blessing to the winner! Thanks for sharing your talents, Jim!
We have a lot of Poplar here in central Virginia. I have experienced such a wide range of grain and color with Poplar that I always enjoy turning it. Beautiful wood and once again a great job!
Stunning bowl. The figure is beyond beautiful. The soapstone really complements it. I learned a lot (as always): cellulose sanding sealer, abrasive paste, Shellawax, ... Great technique, thanks, Jim.
Yes, it is definitely a lovely piece! The richness, and colour of the grain invite one to reach out and touch, no, caress it! Thank you for allowing us the joy of seeing this piece!
Fabulous lidded box Jim, the figure is really amazing. I agree with the lid knob, keep it simple and plain. 👍 I use cellulose sanding sealer which I get prethinned from Hampshire Sheen. If I get anybody else's I thin by up to 40% with a thinner. Regards the Yorkshire grit, I apply it more liberally and work it in slow, about 300rpm until the gritiness is gone. Then take the speed up to 550 rpm for a minute or two, then start to take it off with clean cloth/kitchen towel at 800 rpm until I can't see any on the towel. Disclaimer, this is just how I do it. 😀
Stunning bowl, Jim. I’d have made a smaller finial but my boss (wife) happened to see the vid and told me I was simply wrong and you were right... the colour is beautiful so the sanding sealer does it for me here. So that is the definitive judgment - a gorgeous bowl with a superbly tasteful finial. Thanks! Hugh
Very nice looking piece. I absolutely love turning poplar, I know it’s not the classiest wood, but it’s plentiful the grain and colors can be absolutely beautiful. But as any wood you need to make sure your tools are sharp.
Hi Jim, Love that Poplar lidded bowl. I am from Yorkshire so always use Yorkshire Grit. There is an excellent 2nd product to use called Yorkshire Grit polish. The finish is very good. Looking forward to your next project. Chris
Another beautiful project! Great woods, too. Love how they have similar grains. You have such a strong shaping sense! Glad to hear the poplar story. In Iowa, we use poplars for wind breaks. They grow tall, skinny, and fast but don’t seem to live long. Your poplar must have been royalty.
As a photographer, I fully appreciate the better camera quality, and I love how it brings out the details in something you love. I also love the passion with which you talk about different woods. Something that never crossed my mind!
I really like the way you fit the lid with the slight reveal. I don’t normally do that but will give it a go. Could be the beautiful character of the wood that makes it work so well. Great piece!
Very nice container! I do thin my sealer 50/50. I also found that the blue shop towels will transfer the color to your work. I have changed to white only and no longer have that problem.
Thanks, Jim, for your generosity in covering all the details of your work, this is what makes a great video. Lovely result and letting the grain take the credit for your craftsmanship. Regards from Poole England
I love the figure in that wood. My husband built me freezer kiln after watching your videos. It works great! Thanks for the tips. I tried friction polish on a small lidded box for the first time. It was really smooth. I have only turned 5 bowls so I have a lot to learn. I enjoy your videos.
Gorgeous wood! The figure is fantastic! I have watched a ton of turners use the sealer and none of them have said they cut it at all. Don't forget you need to sand the surface after you apply it. The friction pastes are great.
Hi Jim, Lovely pot! The Yorkshire grit has mineral oil and wax in and is usually not used before oil finish although I have seen people clean the wax off with denatured alcohol before oiling.
Jim this is amazing wood the grain is stunningly beautiful. On the inside of the bowl I saw the shape of a nose and lips of a child. Fantastic work wow.
The grain on this wood is spectacular!
It’s amazing! Thanks
You always do OUTSTANDING WORK ON ALL THE PIECE YOU DO. BEAUTIFUL JOB
Thanks 😊
Wow! That grain really pops. Looks fantastic.

We have a lot of Poplar here in central Virginia. I have experienced such a wide range of grain and color with Poplar that I always enjoy turning it. Beautiful wood and once again a great job!
Thanks Joel! I don’t usually turn it unless I see lots of big limbs, then I know there will be lots of nice grain.
Stunning bowl. The figure is beyond beautiful. The soapstone really complements it. I learned a lot (as always): cellulose sanding sealer, abrasive paste, Shellawax, ... Great technique, thanks, Jim.
Awesome, thanks!

Not bad for popular eh? Nicest tree I ever got! Thanks
Stunning bowl, Jim. Thanks mamma knows best, my wife hates the finial, lol. Just goes to show, we all like different things.
Very nice looking piece. I absolutely love turning poplar, I know it’s not the classiest wood, but it’s plentiful the grain and colors can be absolutely beautiful. But as any wood you need to make sure your tools are sharp.
Thanks, you are very correct, sharp tools are the key!

Love your use of soapstone inlay. Very attractive and a refreshing change from epoxy.
Tons of natural inlay videos on my channel, check them out, thanks 🙏
Beautiful wood grain! I just finished my first lidded bowl. Made from ash with a walnut finial. I use Ack’s abrasive paste on everything.
Thanks for watching
Jim, this is covered bowl is very nice! It was great to see another inlay project! The grain in the wood is gorgeous!
Thanks K
Very nice container! I do thin my sealer 50/50. I also found that the blue shop towels will transfer the color to your work. I have changed to white only and no longer have that problem.
Great tip, thanks.
It's amazing how perfect the nature of the tree is ...
And how it unfolds when it falls into the hands of a master of such a high level.

Great! The two kilns of got never shut off, thanks.
I am getting ready to cut one of my poplar trees down. I will definitely try to make a bowl like this one.
Good stuff, this came from a crotch section, thanks
Gorgeous wood! The figure is fantastic! I have watched a ton of turners use the sealer and none of them have said they cut it at all. Don't forget you need to sand the surface after you apply it. The friction pastes are great.
Since this video was shot I’ve found out most do cut it 50/50.
That Poplar grain is just beautiful! Love the container/box!

Would like to try it sometime.
Thanks Ricky!
For some reason this video never made it to my play list..
Looks great!
Hum, don’t know? Thanks for watching tho!
Hi Jim, Lovely pot! The Yorkshire grit has mineral oil and wax in and is usually not used before oil finish although I have seen people clean the wax off with denatured alcohol before oiling.
The literature that came with the can said any choice of finish can be applied over the grit. The wood bowl finish worked just fine 🤷♂️, thanks.
