The grain on this wood is spectacular!
It’s amazing! Thanks
Wow! That grain really pops. Looks fantastic.
Thanks James!
Beautiful lidded pot, Jim. The colors in the poplar are so awesome. I love your videos. You are a magnificent woodworker! ❤🙃
Thanks 😊
Nice work, glad you are branching out with new turnings
I’ve been doing these for years, just don’t do a lot of them , thanks 🙏
Loved your total approach to the Poplar box. Awesome design and finish! Thanks
Thanks 🙏🏻
You always do OUTSTANDING WORK ON ALL THE PIECE YOU DO. BEAUTIFUL JOB
Thanks 😊
What ever you create it’s a marvel to me. Again I watch your videos over and over and still impressed. I try very hard to do the same but there yet. Thank you for your wonderful well description/ presentation of your your work. Of course when you do it, it doesn’t look so difficult!! Ha!
Thanks again for your great comments! Jim.
My wife and I both loved that vessel. I wish I could buy it. Even your mistakes turn out out gorgeous.
Thanks 🙏
That is a gorgeous bowl. Would not have expected poplar to turn so well and have such beauty. Thanks for great work.
Really appreciate you looking at different finishes.
Thanks Guy.
Yes, it is definitely a lovely piece! The richness, and colour of the grain invite one to reach out and touch, no, caress it! Thank you for allowing us the joy of seeing this piece!
My pleasure, thanks for watching!
Stunning bowl. The figure is beyond beautiful. The soapstone really complements it. I learned a lot (as always): cellulose sanding sealer, abrasive paste, Shellawax, ... Great technique, thanks, Jim.
Awesome, thanks!
We have a lot of Poplar here in central Virginia. I have experienced such a wide range of grain and color with Poplar that I always enjoy turning it. Beautiful wood and once again a great job!
Thanks Joel! I don’t usually turn it unless I see lots of big limbs, then I know there will be lots of nice grain.
As a photographer, I fully appreciate the better camera quality, and I love how it brings out the details in something you love.
I also love the passion with which you talk about different woods. Something that never crossed my mind!
I keep improving my camera skills with each video, or at least I try to, lol. Thanks 🙏
Your Inley work is absolutely beautiful.. Also I like how you explain the products you use
Thanks!
That's one of the most beautiful grain I've seen so far. The bowl is fabulous.
Not bad for popular eh? Nicest tree I ever got! Thanks
Stunning bowl, never seen popular that looks that beautiful
That tree was special! Thanks
Lovely job Jim beautiful popular grain beautifully finished thanks for showing video👍🤴
Thanks Colin!
What a pretty little bowl. The woodgrain is beautiful, and I love the shape. It's strange watching an older video without any resin.❤❤
Lol. Thank you very much!
I didn’t know that poplar had such gorgeous grain. That is an amazing bowl. I’ve learned a great deal about this wood.
Your not going to find very many pieces like this. Thanks
I really like this box allot. The crotch wood grain is awesome. I like the contrasting wood of the finial too.
Thanks!
Fabulous lidded box Jim, the figure is really amazing. I agree with the lid knob, keep it simple and plain. 👍
I use cellulose sanding sealer which I get prethinned from Hampshire Sheen. If I get anybody else's I thin by up to 40% with a thinner. Regards the Yorkshire grit, I apply it more liberally and work it in slow, about 300rpm until the gritiness is gone. Then take the speed up to 550 rpm for a minute or two, then start to take it off with clean cloth/kitchen towel at 800 rpm until I can't see any on the towel.
Disclaimer, this is just how I do it. 😀
Great info Ian, thanks!
Very unexpected for wood grain for popular, another excellent job absolute perfection.
Poplar will surprise you sometimes, thanks
It's amazing how perfect the nature of the tree is ...
And how it unfolds when it falls into the hands of a master of such a high level.
Thank you!
Poplar, I dont believe it, that turned out fantastic!
I’ve still got a few special pieces to make yet, thanks
Amazing grain pattern, Fantastic Piece 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks 🙏
I love this lidded vessel.
Thanks Auntie.
Stunning bowl, Jim. I’d have made a smaller finial but my boss (wife) happened to see the vid and told me I was simply wrong and you were right... the colour is beautiful so the sanding sealer does it for me here. So that is the definitive judgment - a gorgeous bowl with a superbly tasteful finial. Thanks! Hugh
Thanks mamma knows best, my wife hates the finial, lol. Just goes to show, we all like different things.
This is so pretty. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Thanks Nancy!
Really sweet project this week thanks till next time stay safe
Thanks Tony!
You have made me change my mind on poplar. I was never a fan of it but wow! That figure! Beautiful work.
Look for those big limbs! Thanks.
Love the grain in the piece.fantastic job
Thanks John!
Great look box. Nice job and I love the grain of the wood.
It sure is pretty! Thanks.
Nice piece, poplar can be interesting I agree. Nice job noticing the grain character. Love Yorkshire grit and their fine polish. Stay safe...
It sure can be for a junk wood species, thanks.
So pretty! Might be my favorite.
Tons of figure! Thanks.
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful
Thanks 🙏
Very nice! Love that grain.
Thanks John!
Beautiful piece. And I think the top is just right . It doesn’t overpower the rest of the box. Subscribed 👍
Awesome thanks!
Really nice job Jim. The wood grain is awesome.
Thanks!
Stunning piece of timber
Thanks 🙏
Once again a great piece! Awesome job Jim!
Thanks Brad!
Thanks, Jim, for your generosity in covering all the details of your work, this is what makes a great video. Lovely result and letting the grain take the credit for your craftsmanship. Regards from Poole England
Thanks Brian!
Great box Jim. I sure like the colour in the wood.
Thanks Jack!
For some reason this video never made it to my play list..
Looks great!

Great vessel Jim!
Its a tad soft, but I think poplar is a very underrated wood. It can be gorgeous!
Thanks for sharing!
Seth
It certainly can, thanks Seth
Fantastic grain! Cute bowl!
Thanks Beatrice!
Very beautiful! Good luck!
Thanks 🙏
As always a beautiful box and informative video
Thanks 🙏
Absolutely beautiful piece Jim.
I have never seen popular looking like that. Absolutely stunning.
Thanks for the video.
Thanks Carl!
Perfect timing, popular fell in yard, will burn most but kept all crotches for turning. Great idea
Give it a try, you got nothing to loose but time, lol.
Love your use of soapstone inlay. Very attractive and a refreshing change from epoxy.
Tons of natural inlay videos on my channel, check them out, thanks 🙏
👍Great job.
Thank you for your video.
Thanks 🙏
Another beautiful project! Great woods, too. Love how they have similar grains. You have such a strong shaping sense! Glad to hear the poplar story. In Iowa, we use poplars for wind breaks. They grow tall, skinny, and fast but don’t seem to live long. Your poplar must have been royalty.
It was an incredible tree! Thanks
The grain is absolutely gorgeous! I love that little bowl. It reminds me of a pumpkin.
Thank you very much!
Well done, Jim. Best looking Poplar I've seen yet.
Thanks 🙏
as always beautiful just a gorgeous grain and finish
Thanks 😊
I love the figure in that wood. My husband built me freezer kiln after watching your videos. It works great! Thanks for the tips. I tried friction polish on a small lidded box for the first time. It was really smooth. I have only turned 5 bowls so I have a lot to learn. I enjoy your videos.
Great! The two kilns of got never shut off, thanks.
Excellent work. Really enjoyed your video. Well turned and well done!
Thanks Joseph!
Absolutely beautiful.
Thanks Jean!
Beautiful wood, nice design.
Thank you very much!
Very nice looking piece. I absolutely love turning poplar, I know it’s not the classiest wood, but it’s plentiful the grain and colors can be absolutely beautiful. But as any wood you need to make sure your tools are sharp.
Thanks, you are very correct, sharp tools are the key!
This is awesome Jim!!
Thanks 🙏
Many people look forward to Friday for the weekend. I look forward to Friday for your videos!!! Your lidded box is beautiful. The design, finish and videography was worth the time to watch. Have a great week!
Thank you!
Awesome, thanks Dane!
Jim, first time commenting just letting you know you are quite a craftsman enjoy your video's keep up the good work!
Thanks Ric!
I really like the way you fit the lid with the slight reveal. I don’t normally do that but will give it a go. Could be the beautiful character of the wood that makes it work so well. Great piece!
It adds another visual line and yes, that crotch grain really pops! Thanks
Absolutely beautiful bowl! I prefer more color to enhance the wood, yet this is a wonderful example of inlays!!
Great job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Love the grain in the wood, I started turning as a hobby two years ago. It’s nice too see you trying new things, love your videos. I’m a Yorkshire man and I too use Yorkshire Grit, puts a lovely finish in wood. Keep up the good work 😊
Thanks, I’m definitely not done with it!
Love the box!
Thanks 🙏
Nice looking container
Thanks 🙏
Beautiful color and shape
It’s a beauty! Thanks.
You made a Poplar bowl look like an acorn. Cool!
Lol 😝 thanks
I am getting ready to cut one of my poplar trees down. I will definitely try to make a bowl like this one.
Good stuff, this came from a crotch section, thanks
Man, that is gorgeous grain, good job
Pretty nice for a weed species, thanks!
Beautiful work Jim. Thank you for sharing and educating!
No problem Kevin, thanks.
Great piece. Beautiful piece of wood that yielded a wonderful bowl. Finish came out well.
Thanks Doug, it sure is nice!
Hi Jim,
Love that Poplar lidded bowl. I am from Yorkshire so always use Yorkshire Grit. There is an excellent 2nd product to use called Yorkshire Grit polish.
The finish is very good.
Looking forward to your next project.
Chris
I use the Microfine grit in this weeks video, thanks.
beautiful grain in that wood
Some of the stuff that tree produce was amazing, thanks 🙏
Beautiful. Love the wood and the finish. The soapstone adds a nice touch. Thanks for the vids.
Thanks, soapstone makes everything better, lol.
Love the grain. It's pretty.
It sure is, thanks 🙏
Beautiful work.
Thanks!
Nice work. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful wood grain! I just finished my first lidded bowl. Made from ash with a walnut finial. I use Ack’s abrasive paste on everything.
Thanks for watching
Gorgeous wood! The figure is fantastic! I have watched a ton of turners use the sealer and none of them have said they cut it at all. Don't forget you need to sand the surface after you apply it. The friction pastes are great.
Since this video was shot I’ve found out most do cut it 50/50.
WOW! Beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful Jim, good to see you using the yorkshire grit.
I thought I would give it a go, so far I’m pleased with it, thanks.
Good looking box!! Still waiting on my bowl!! Lol
Thanks Chris! Getting close!
Very nice container! I do thin my sealer 50/50. I also found that the blue shop towels will transfer the color to your work. I have changed to white only and no longer have that problem.
Great tip, thanks.
Jim, this is covered bowl is very nice! It was great to see another inlay project! The grain in the wood is gorgeous!
Thanks K

WOW! Stunning piece of wood turned into a beautiful lidded box. Thanks Jim for showing us how to achieve this. Just need to find some wood of that quality to attempt something similar. 👍👍👍
Thanks 🙏🏻
Quality work as usual.

Really nice job jim.that's a beautiful piece w so much grain.I've burnt a ton of poplar.but I'll be looking closer from on.super box .
