We had so many of these pods in our front yard. The brightest thing I could come up with was to spray paint them silver or gold and to glue a small bow at the top along with a loop of thread and use them as Christmas tree ornaments. What you have done here is absolutely brilliant!

@@squareandlevel Scott, if you want some crazy nature to work with you should look up Chestnut seed pods. We bought a house many years ago that had a Chestnut tree about 5 feet from our front porch. Over the years, it became a day of dread to go out and try to get them all up. I often wondered, why our government hadn’t devised a WMD made from them. They truly were that bad. Imagine, extremely sharp, brittle needles, all spaced out on a tiny ball, and so strong they would pierce the rubber on your shoes. It was miserable if you by chance got some of the needles stuck in your foot. The only way to remove them was either a really sticky tape or letting them work their way out. I’m supposed to be working. L O L. Normally I just let RUclips kind of play and while the music was really great, I ended up dropping everything and watching this, probably with my mouth open the whole time. L O L so amazing. That is stunning and the whole process, it’s just super complicated, sort of blowing my mind. I’m an artist so I have an inkling of the amount of knowledge, skill, mastery that went into that. Also, very educational, even though I don’t think I’m going to take on Woodturning, but I do so many other things. There are a lot of procedural gems in there. I’ve always wanted to work with liquid glass. I do lapidary work so I’d like to explore that as an option for stabilizing some of the cool rocks we find in the skokomish river that have veins of soft, porous material, but are so incredibly colorful. I haven’t seen anybody make cabs out of these things, so that’s one of the things I’m getting ready to try. Anyway, I’m saving the video.
One man's trash is another man's treasure and this is definitely a treasure of art it may not have been an original thought process still very unique very cool and very well appreciated. The thought is one thing the action and ability to move upon that thought is what brings greatness into the world. Thank you sir for your video
I loved seeing your process, and your work is stunning! Would love to see this design as a lantern as well, all those shapes and colors lit from the inside would be awesome! Thank you so very much for creating and sharing - absolutely brilliant!
I think this is stunningly beautiful!! My first thought was that it looked like an ancient jar, that was found in an Imperial Chinese tomb, filled with cinnabar.
Incredibly gorgeous and loved watching the process to make it! Artists see flaws that the rest of us simply love as is, that’s how they learn to top their own work! I’m impressed! Wish it was mine even! I create with nature and ordered a bunch of these seed pods. I admire them, as I don’t live with them. There is so much character to them! And yes, I’ve purchased many types of “yard waste” to work with. I’m always looking for new ideas, but my years are limiting my dreams. I was able to enjoy creating with these seed pods through you! Thank you for that! 😊
They are called sweetgum balls. I don't know about the rest of the world; but we have them here in the south where I live. We even have a tree in our back yard. I used to love to roll them on the ground for the cats to play with.
@@McApplebees_does_not_exist in my neck of the woods they come off of liquid amber trees. And they are a nightmare to deal with. You never want to grow them anywhere where there might be elderly people walking on the sidewalk. Or even healthy young people. It's like stepping on a ball bearing with spikes
@@McApplebees_does_not_exist Those are sweet gum balls, and they grow all over the American South, at the very least. Far north they go but they are native to this area for sure.
We've always called them monkey balls trees, and heaven help you if you ride a bike through a bunch of the green fallen ones, they'll end you in a ditch with raw knees.
I used to turn sweet gum balls into garlands and hanging ornaments for my room as a kid (my mom periodically threw them out because they were 'tacky'). I love that other people are using them for art too. They are like nature's little ornaments.
Stunningly beautiful piece! And as much as I enjoy learning what tools people use, just having instrumentals with no talking was relaxing and allowed me to really focus on what you were doing. Thoroughly enjoyed this, thank you!!
That is exquisite. The red tone gives it such depth and contrast. Almost looks like it has a soft light inside. And the seed pods-it’s hard to beat the beauty of nature’s structural patterns. Also…have to give props to that fantastic beard. 😆

Great use of the sweet gum pods! My neighbor has those trees as well. They are messy but the autumn colors are brilliant. Nice work
One man's trash is another man's treasure and this is definitely a treasure of art it may not have been an original thought process still very unique very cool and very well appreciated.
The thought is one thing the action and ability to move upon that thought is what brings greatness into the world. Thank you sir for your video
Thank you very much, I appreciate it. I hope you have a great day.

Stunning piece!! Was a joy to watch 😊
Thank you so much!
I loved seeing your process, and your work is stunning! Would love to see this design as a lantern as well, all those shapes and colors lit from the inside would be awesome! Thank you so very much for creating and sharing - absolutely brilliant!
Thank you very much. I hope you have a wonderful day!
Scott
I think this is stunningly beautiful!! My first thought was that it looked like an ancient jar, that was found in an Imperial Chinese tomb, filled with cinnabar.
Thanks so much. I really appreciate it. Hope you have a great day!
Scott
Incredibly gorgeous and loved watching the process to make it! Artists see flaws that the rest of us simply love as is, that’s how they learn to top their own work! I’m impressed! Wish it was mine even! I create with nature and ordered a bunch of these seed pods. I admire them, as I don’t live with them. There is so much character to them! And yes, I’ve purchased many types of “yard waste” to work with. I’m always looking for new ideas, but my years are limiting my dreams. I was able to enjoy creating with these seed pods through you! Thank you for that! 😊
I'm glad I watched the whole thing.
I love the uniqueness and beauty. I would also love to see lights or faux candle and see that pigment shine through. If there’s enough room.
Thanks! I will definitely try to add some lights in future projects to see how it looks. Hope you have a great day!
Scott
I was hoping the whole time he would put a light in it! I bet it would make beautiful patterns on the walls and ceiling at night.
I thought Lego was painful to step on, where in the world do those things grow I want a bucket of them to put on my stairs Home Alone style.
Do you put milk in before the cereal too you fiend?! 😂
@@McApplebees_does_not_exist
Those are sweet gum balls, and they grow all over the American South, at the very least. Far north they go but they are native to this area for sure.
We've always called them monkey balls trees, and heaven help you if you ride a bike through a bunch of the green fallen ones, they'll end you in a ditch with raw knees.
Some people call those gum balls. And some of us call them dingleberries.
We call them Witch burrs for protection spells.
Sweet gum balls from the sweet gum tree.
I just call them spikey balls
We call them sticker balls. Beautiful piece of art
I used to turn sweet gum balls into garlands and hanging ornaments for my room as a kid (my mom periodically threw them out because they were 'tacky'). I love that other people are using them for art too. They are like nature's little ornaments.
Turning yard waste into art with $10000+ of machinery and supplies
@ssbsnb1200 Yeah and? I don't see any claims about only using spit and elbow grease. Just enjoy the video. O.o
Stunningly beautiful piece! And as much as I enjoy learning what tools people use, just having instrumentals with no talking was relaxing and allowed me to really focus on what you were doing.
Thoroughly enjoyed this, thank you!!
Thank you very much! I appreciate it. I hope you have a wonderful day.

Wow. What a beautiful surprise. ❤
That is exquisite. The red tone gives it such depth and contrast. Almost looks like it has a soft light inside. And the seed pods-it’s hard to beat the beauty of nature’s structural patterns.
Also…have to give props to that fantastic beard. 😆

When I was a kid one of my chores especially when I got in trouble was to spend a Saturday afternoon picking up these sweet gum pod seeds. When in trouble I was not allowed gloves or a rake but it was hard to use a rake when it was taller than your 3 or 4 year old self. Boy you learn to hate these seed pods. I grew up crafty but I never thought to use something I dislike with a passion because after 3 hours my back and poor tiny hands would be in so much pain but I digress I never thought to use these sweet gum seed pods in a craft to make something so pretty, huzzah to you sir.
Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day!
Scott
Never thought burrs could be so pretty!
I like the color. Nice design with the wood too. The top was awesome too.
Thanks!
Sweet gum!👍
Sweet gum pods! Great natural medicine and the wood is beautiful.
I love you Jim
Carry!!! It would be an absolute honor and blessing to own of your incredible masterpieces that you created.
Awesome craftsmanship. Beautiful piece
I can see this as a lamp base too! With a light inside! Beautiful work, I would love to learn the lathe one day!
Thank you very much you should go for it. It really is fun. Small tip is that you will likely spend more money on all the needed accessories than the lathe itself, so be prepared. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great day.

A beautiful masterpiece. Congratulations! Greetings from the Czech Republic.
