Woodturning Yard Waste Into Functional Art
My neighbors tree drops these seed pods in my backyard every year. I decided I would try to make something with them instead of just throwing them in the waste bin. I used zebra wood for the end caps and part of the lid. The eye candy Komainu ultracolor shift pigment powder looks absolutely amazing combined with the superclear deep pour epoxy resin. I chose to use Waterlox original for the finish. I had a few firsts in this video. This was my first attempt at making segmented pieces to turn. Also, this is the first time I’ve made a lid for a piece. While overall I am happy with how this piece came out I am not thrilled with the lid. It feels good in the hand but just isn’t as pleasing to ...

Woodturning a Fantastic Bowl From a Flat Board
Просмотров 79 тыс.Месяц назад
This is my first attempt at woodturning a bowl from a board. The inspiration for this piece was from a video by thepapa1947. For a full instructional video on this process, please watch his video. Link below to his video and channel. I tried to stick to his instructions for my first attempt and feel I was fairly successful. I used Walnut, quilted Maple, and Padauk in this piece. Stunning Root Ball Turning Transformation
Просмотров 238 тыс.2 месяца назад
I was given this Almond tree root ball from a member of my local woodturning club. This is my first attempt at turning a root ball. I was definitely a little nervous about this one, it was the largest and most unbalanced piece I have turned to date. Originally I had planned to not use any resin in this piece, but unfortunately there was no way I was going to be able to hallow it out and have it...
Woodturning Unique Walnut Log
Просмотров 28 тыс.2 месяца назад
I am turning this vessel from a walnut crotch log I won in a raffle at my local woodturners club meeting. I had some indecision about what resin project to do next, I just couldn’t pick one from the list. So I decided to take a break and make something out of just wood for a change. Definitely a fun, quick piece and I got some practice in with my all my tools. Even got to try out my new lathe s...

Simple Hybrid Woodturning Project

Today I am making a simple elegant box from spalted walnut. I will be testing out some new carbide tools, a new epoxy resin, and a new finish. This was the perfect piece to test out some new techniques on. It was a fun small piece that I will keep in my shop to store my wedding ring, while I am "turning" wood into sawdust. Woodturning Lovely Maple Resin Bowl

I had this scrap maple left over from an old project. I milled it into 1/4” planks and spaced it with 3/16” paint stir sticks. The mold is made from 1/32” polycarbonate sheet. I am using urethane resin for the pour, not epoxy resin. I almost ran out of time for the pour. This resin only has a 12 minute working time once mixed to get it into the pressure pot, but is cured in 4 hours which is ama...
Woodturning Hot Pepper Wood Bowl

I found some pepper tree logs on the side of the road on the way to work. They had been sitting for some time and were quite dry. After looking at the unique wood I decided to try a fire theme resin pour to go with the pepper wood. I wanted to try something new that I read in a book about hybrid woodturning. I used urethane resin instead of epoxy. Supposedly it would turn easier and polish bett...

We have several sweetgum trees and some years we have thousands of these prickly balls all over the place. They are a fall hazard. I learned that in some countries the wood from the sweetgum tree is split into thin slates and then used to make fruit and vegetable baskets. We did an experiment by filling nylon net bags with sweetgum balls and we lined a creek bank with them a decade ago and those bags are still there fully intact. Also the Native Americans made a tincture from the seeds that are on the balls. It’s a natural form of tamiflu.

When I was a kid one of my chores especially when I got in trouble was to spend a Saturday afternoon picking up these sweet gum pod seeds. When in trouble I was not allowed gloves or a rake but it was hard to use a rake when it was taller than your 3 or 4 year old self. Boy you learn to hate these seed pods. I grew up crafty but I never thought to use something I dislike with a passion because after 3 hours my back and poor tiny hands would be in so much pain but I digress I never thought to use these sweet gum seed pods in a craft to make something so pretty, huzzah to you sir.
