Woodturning Yard Waste Into Functional Art

  • My neighbors tree drops these seed pods in my backyard every year. I decided I would try to make something with them instead of just throwing them in the waste bin. I used zebra wood for the end caps and part of the lid. The eye candy Komainu ultracolor shift pigment powder looks absolutely amazing combined with the superclear deep pour epoxy resin. I chose to use Waterlox original for the finish. I had a few firsts in this video. This was my first attempt at making segmented pieces to turn. Also, this is the first time I’ve made a lid for a piece. While overall I am happy with how this piece came out I am not thrilled with the lid. It feels good in the hand but just isn’t as pleasing to the eye. I may go back to this one and make some adjustments to the lid at a later date if something better comes to me. ( I left the tenon on the lid for this reason). I thought I had an original idea with this piece, but after further research I found Sprague woodturning had made a video a while back using these spiky seed pods as well. I’ve had mixed responses about this piece. Some people think it looks amazing and some say creepy. What do you think? Please let me know in the comments below. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a great day!

My husband was riding his bike to work (long time ago) and saw the road directly ahead was full of these. He looked back to see if he could go around, but a big truck was coming. He had no choice and rode right into them, there was no time to stop. His front wheel hit the patch and he went down.
Every inch of his uncovered body, and some that was covered, looked like he had been attacked by a pack of kittens.
I'd love to have this piece to give to him, he'd get a good laugh from it 😂

Excuse me Mr. S&L but I have to say this is one of my favorite pieces I've seen made before my eyes. I know it is not an urn but I've been searching for a urn for my father for a few years now and haven't been able to find anything I feel is worthy enough to call home for his ashes, but this my friend would be it - lid and all! (wink wink) My Daddio was a craftsman, a man who made everything and took pride in doing so and teaching his daughters to use the tools as well. I'm proud to be my dad's daughter who sat under cars or in the work shop alongside him learning anything and everything he would teach me. And feel like he would be happy in something of that caliber to find his eternal slumber in. Now that you have opened my eyes to this project I know what I am finally looking for. If only I knew how to make one myself, one day maybe I will have my own workshop and be able to make greater things than I do now.... THANK YOU. ✌💜🙃🙏

Have you also looked into Cremation Memorial Glass Art ? About 12 years ago I had about 1/2 teaspoonful of my mother’s ashes plus her 2 favorite colors of glass turned into a beautiful globe with a beautiful wood light box to hold it and shine light through it plus a small brass plaque attached. Each piece is given its own unique engraved identification. There’s a myriad of companies making unique Memorial Glass in multitudes of shapes & designs which can be lovely additions & keepsakes.

He is on the shelf along my collection of crystals & gets to feel the sunrise in the mornings. There are so many amazing creations for final places for our loved ones these days. I’m supposed to be working. L O L. Normally I just let RUclips kind of play and while the music was really great, I ended up dropping everything and watching this, probably with my mouth open the whole time. L O L so amazing. That is stunning and the whole process, it’s just super complicated, sort of blowing my mind. I’m an artist so I have an inkling of the amount of knowledge, skill, mastery that went into that. Also, very educational, even though I don’t think I’m going to take on Woodturning, but I do so many other things. There are a lot of procedural gems in there. I’ve always wanted to work with liquid glass. I do lapidary work so I’d like to explore that as an option for stabilizing some of the cool rocks we find in the skokomish river that have veins of soft, porous material, but are so incredibly colorful. I haven’t seen anybody make cabs out of these things, so that’s one of the things I’m getting ready to try. Anyway, I’m saving the video.

@@squareandlevel Scott, if you want some crazy nature to work with you should look up Chestnut seed pods. We bought a house many years ago that had a Chestnut tree about 5 feet from our front porch. Over the years, it became a day of dread to go out and try to get them all up. I often wondered, why our government hadn’t devised a WMD made from them. They truly were that bad. Imagine, extremely sharp, brittle needles, all spaced out on a tiny ball, and so strong they would pierce the rubber on your shoes. It was miserable if you by chance got some of the needles stuck in your foot. The only way to remove them was either a really sticky tape or letting them work their way out. Neither of those solutions worked very well. Anyhow, just a suggestion. Lol. Thank you again for your beautiful art. ✌🏻

Thanks again for watching as always my friend. Hope you have an excellent day sir.

When I was a kid one of my chores especially when I got in trouble was to spend a Saturday afternoon picking up these sweet gum pod seeds. When in trouble I was not allowed gloves or a rake but it was hard to use a rake when it was taller than your 3 or 4 year old self. Boy you learn to hate these seed pods. I grew up crafty but I never thought to use something I dislike with a passion because after 3 hours my back and poor tiny hands would be in so much pain but I digress I never thought to use these sweet gum seed pods in a craft to make something so pretty, huzzah to you sir.
