Dang! I knitted a swatch on the recommended needles and had too many stitches. So I went up a size and got the same number of too few stitches (plus a “holey” fabric). I became catatonic for a year before trying again and finding this video. I hope it works! Thank you!

I believe the last sweater was supposed to resemble an ermine coat previously much favoured by royalty. Such coats were made from stoats-a type of weasel-and these were prized for their white fur. If I'm not mistaken (and I wouldn't be surprised to find that I am) the "protrusions" resemble what on the coat would have been a stoat's tail (which ends in a black tip) and in those days because of how expensive it was to make such coats the more tails (i.e., dead weasels) the more time it took to make the coat and consequently the wealthier the wearer must (at least apparently) be to have spent so much to possess it.

Thanks, great explanation. I've wondered why people say keep swatching until you get gauge. I never get the pattern gauge. This method works better for my brain since math is more concrete. I normally wing it and adjust as I go along and hope for the best. At times, someone usually gets a gift 😊

the back side is the twisted rib. You can do this with the front side if you learn how to "knit in the back" you can look that up and you'll learn how to do it
