Dang! I knitted a swatch on the recommended needles and had too many stitches. So I went up a size and got the same number of too few stitches (plus a “holey” fabric). I became catatonic for a year before trying again and finding this video. I hope it works! Thank you!

how i do it but i just check gauge 4 Inches in and modify the pattern to switch size on the fly because I am like that

Thanks, great explanation. I've wondered why people say keep swatching until you get gauge. I never get the pattern gauge. This method works better for my brain since math is more concrete. I normally wing it and adjust as I go along and hope for the best. At times, someone usually gets a gift 😊

Excellent, clear explanation. Thanks! I’m one of those “It’s a miracle if I ever knit a swatch” knitters, and usually, I end up just winging it. With a top-down sweater in the round, I can usually tell how it’s going to fit through the bust before I actually arrive at the bust, and I usually buy more than enough yarn to keep knitting until I’m happy with the length. And I find that a swatch usually doesn’t help with the fit of a neckline. I also think my swatches always lie. I wish they would behave like yours.
