Tin Can Knits Flax pullover is a good basic sweater for a man. It is free and it is sized from infant to 6XL. I have made two of them for my grandson. The pattern is for worsted weight yarn and the gauge is 18 stitches per 4 inches. You can download a pattern option if you want to add short rows at the back of the neck. Just another suggestion for you. Good luck.

That innocent pup face!! 😂 Sweater-wise, I’d probably tend to go for one that I could see on several male bodies in the photos, especially project pages. I’ve heard a few male knitters mention how the ‘unisex’ patterns don’t always fit their bodies well. The PK pattern might be a good bet if you are comfortable with her patterns. If this one is a success & he loves it & you love knitting for him, then you can knit something a bit more out of your comfort zone 😅

What a delightful puppy! Mine is 7 months and getting so big! He likes yarn too... He is so happy if he snatches a ball of yarn!
Concerning the sweater, I would suggest to pick one that has nice necklines on finished projects, modeled on males, and have a fit that you want to go for. I don't know why but I have struggled with necklines for my husband and I always look for pictures of funny necklines for picking a pattern! I knitted him the Flax as my first ever sweater and it didn't fit right around his neck at all. It was such a disappointment. So now I always make sure that sweaters have decent neckline shaping.
Good luck picking the right pattern and enjoy! The yarn looks lovely to work with.

I agree with the Flax and Men’s Classic Raglan. Also, I knit a Maxim Cyr pattern (Single Malt) and it was one of the best written patterns I’ve ever followed. You might also check out Brooklyn Tweed patterns. Good luck!

I think the last one, but I don’t have a lot of experience knitting sweaters. What a cute little dude!

Definitely ones that show men on it. Maxim Cyr does great patterns. Done his Single Malt for my hubby. I don't like doing tubular cast on so I do the alternating cable cast on instead of it. Watched Drowning in Yarn for the tutorial. Good luck hope he'll wear it lots.

Alonzo is so CUTE! I’ve never knit a sweater for an adult male so I would probably go for a top down raglan! Can’t wait to see what you make!

Love your podcast Karen! I would go for the Petit Knit pattern. The Flax doesn't have short rows in the neckline and short rows create a better fit. Especially when he will were something underneath

I knitted my husband the Man's classic raglan pullover by Jane Richmond. A simple top down raglan and the fit was really perfect. Maybe also one to consider. Just be wear of lots and lots of endless knitting, a man's body seems sooo looong :). Good luck

I think the Petite Knit pattern will work for you. There is also the Flax sweater. You can also thy The Magic, Custom-Fit Raglan Sweater

I’d stick with a top down raglan. Set in sleeves can end up too tight in my experience. I recommend the Flax. (It’s worsted wt with 19 st gauge, but I used a DK and got gauge on a size 8). It is a great pattern and you could leave off the garter on shoulders and sleeves for even more basic.

I vote the Petite Knit pattern. I would be pretty easy to omit the folded collar. 😊

it sounds to me like you like the petite knits pattern the best, and I think the neckline modification would be easily achieved

I think you are actually looking fo the style of crew neck that is found best on the older styles that are knit in pieces, front back and 2 sleeves. Don't forget to wash and block your swatch ♥

I’m making the Albion by Brooklyn Tweed. They had Tons of patterns when I was looking. I wanted one with a more structured shoulder. It’s knit in the round bottom up and then you attach the sleeves. It’s been two weeks and I’m 7 inches up. I think that’s pretty good for non-monogamous knitting.

Curious how you searched in Ravelry...I would start with the yarn, then look for pullovers for men. That way, you can really get a feel for how it will look in your yarn. Also, I have knit a lot for men, and I would steer more towards patterns designed for men. The proportions of the armholes are different for men and women, ie, the length of the raglan. How about Caine by Martin Storey? Best of luck!

I am considering The Single Malt by Maxim Cut for my husband, have you seen that pattern. I like the Petite Knit pattern that chose also. I have knit a couple of her patterns and do like them.
    Good luck.

Check out the men’s classic raglan by Jane Richmond - it is worsted but I used a lighter worsted
I give it 5 stars - pattern was terrific - final project is loved by my adult son - several friends have made it for their husbands and sons and everyone has been quite pleased

If you liked the swatch you did at 19sts then maybe you should be looking at worsted weight pattern instead of DK…just a thought

Hi Karen, You've probably already decided about the sweater but since I was in the same quandary as you; there's one pattern I'd saved called Men's Classic Raglan Pullover by Jane Richmond that looked promising to me . I opted for something more textured by Norah Gaughan (in pieces, unfortunately) but this one was tempting. The other one was Rift, by Brooklyn Tweed. On an other topic, I really like your podcasts and have been following you since the beginning, but it feels a little awkward to watch you when you're looking up instead of straight. Not sure why that is, though, so I can't advise you on how to change it. Take care!

Did you swatch English style or only continental? Maybe because of all the unknowns with this project, you may want to stick to your normal style, or at least swatch it to see if your gauge changes enough to allow you to use bigger needles.

I swatched continental - hopefully my tension stays consistent
