See, Romania's team strategy was focused on doing relatively low risk skills perfectly. Their routines were calculated to be difficult to have a 10 point start value, but with the least chance of falling. The Americans, Chinese, Russians would go for the big skills which looked beautiful but carried the danger of falling, going out of bounds, or failing to stick the landing. All the Romanians needed to do was not incur many deductions, and wait for other gymnasts to make a major error. Under the 10 point maximum scoring system, this was a very successful strategy. But when the FIG revamped the scoring system to allow start values above 10, suddenly this strategy wouldn't work any longer. If a gymnast had a routine with a high start value, she could score higher than a gymnast with a less-challenging routine even with a flubbed element. In the Rio Olympics, Simone Biles actually grabbed the beam with her hands during the balance beam final, yet still managed to take bronze because her start value was so high. The article's title is, 'Romania... the End of an Era' if you want to read it. I think the author is probably right. I mean, the other issues didn't help, but the change in scoring was the death knell of Romanian dominance. Maybe they can turn it around; they qualified to at least send a team to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, though not to participate in the team finals. We'll see.

Their education was good enough to ensure them decent jobs worldwide. The reason was the old market collapsed together with the associated jobs and working abroad was the only way to survive. Now is different, but all this has little connection with gymnastics. First generation (Nadia et al) was brutally forced, the second survived because there was a tradition, a school already passed to the trainers... those who didn't escape the dictatorship. Then, there was not enough investment to keep highly experienced people working for the national team, they are all spread, the same (no money) for granting the athletes a special status. People need motivation for extreme efforts, whatever the regime is. More than getting out of the poverty, during the dictatorship was getting out of the country, which was a prison. The new governments after 2000 were trying to adapt to the new economic framework, so the only move they did for sport was privatizing the soccer, cause that gets paid by itself. All the rest was dropped.

My little step sister was training to be a gymnast in Romania. She was so smart she could have been anything she wanted but her mother wanter a gymnast. She was kept in the campus for weeks, not being allowed to see her family, to eat, to leave the campus. She was starved, overworked and beaten. My dad would smuggle food and sometimes sweets for her over the fence and when it came to selection day she narrowly misses the national team. My step mother blames my dad for it, because she says my sister gained weight and so didn't perform. Now my sister is a coach at my old school in my old town. My input is that this sport requires the children to begin at a very young age (5 years old), it requires dedication, starvation, hard work and to put learning on second place. The small girls cannot decide this for themselves so the parents must make that decision. All this for a few years of possible fame and a chance to be a coach afterwards.
