  • Olympic alternate, Kara Eaker, has tested positive. Teammate and alternate, Leanne Wong has tested negative. But because she was in close contact she also has to self quarantine.
Kara will quarantine for 10 days and be sent home. Currently no word on Leanne's schedule.

I think they will learn from the mistakes made. Last year the ISU was able to host speedskating world championships without an audience in the Netherlands. The international athletes all arrived very early and were sequestered in hotels. A few months later the Dutch hosted the Eurovision song contest. The same tactics were applied and they were able to host it without incidents, except for Duncan Lawrence who got the virus right before the event. Reason: he wasn't quarantined. Two members from the Icelandic entry already had Covid when they arrived but it had not shown up in their initial test. So the entire band was stuck in their hotel room. The dutch took a calculated risk and showed that, it is possible to host a big event. The thing is that the Olympics are a lot bigger than Eurovision. As much as I love the olympics; I don't think it is wise to hold them in 2021. It's unfair on the Japanese.

No. They haven't released her full schedule, but Fong says she has to quarantine longer than Eaker. The Olympics will be in full effect in the mean time.

She will not be sent home but my understanding is that as alternates they would have been onsite - however she won't be.

If someone CHOSE to not get vaccinated, I have no sympathy for them if they get Covid, or aren't allowed to play with all the other vaccinated kids. Please don't tell people to send them messages of support - we can decide for ourselves how we feel, and how we want to handle our feelings.

So why are you telling people what not to do? 😂

Leanne is a minor and her parents likely had a huge influence over whether or not she got vaccinated??? Gosh be nice

@@anisaromano5352 Think about who you're talking about here. This is a 17 year-old elite gymnast who spends something like 40-50 hours a week in a gym at a very expensive tuition rate, paid for by her parents. You don't get to be a gymnast at this level without being extremely obedient, even in the face of the pain of a broken bone, torn muscle/tendon/ligament or, as we have seen proof of, while being molested on a regular basis. To add to all of this, this is an Asian girl from and Asian family. You really think this particular 17 year-old is going to skip off to CVS for a vaccination if her parents have told her they aren't allowing it? These are the kind of people who quit gymnastics and report they haven't eaten a hamburger in 5 years. I sat in the arena in St. Louis for Trials and watched Leanne get berated by Al Fong for over 20 minutes for falling off the beam. You and I would have told Al Fong where to go and how fast to get there. You may have told your parents where to go when they forbid your vaccine. But, neither of us is or has been on the USA Gymnastics team, either, and this is one of many reasons why.

@@mjamitche5245 It would be insane of Al Fong to NOT insist his gymnasts get the vaccine. He should have been encouraging EVERYONE old enough to get it, to run out and get vaccinated. Especially going to such a crowded place as the Olympics. If you want to control a child, then control them in a way that is best for their health. How could he have expected her to perform to a degree that would boost his ego if she's got Covid?
