  • This is the second segment looking into the allegations of racism, abuse and mistreatment taking place at Texas Dreams. Given everything that has been alleged from so many gymnasts, one has to wonder why Kim Zmeskal and Chris Burdette haven't been held accountable for their actions and are held to a different standard than Maggie Haney?
    Let's discuss.

Kim learned well from the Karolyi's. A lot of the abuse you're talking about in these videos is eerily similar to what I've heard on other videos from what many other gymnasts experienced at their ranch. Watch videos where gymnasts talk about the abuse they suffered at the hands of the Karolyi's as well as other coaches.
Maggie doesn't have the clout that Kim has which is why I believe USAG is trying to ban her for life

The Zmeskals are responsible for their own actions. Neither Kim nor Chris grew up in the communist Eastern Bloc, nor have they ever lived or worked there.
They are both fully grown adults and fully aware that there are other methods they can use for training without burning out every athlete with potential that is under their supervision.
People need to leave the Karolyis out of this and let the Zmeskals bear the consequences of their actions just like Maggie Haney had to. Because what people don't realise is that the Karolyis are being used an excuse when they are not.

Wow , I'm shocked and hurt by this. Being a formal black male gymnastics coach. I would not dare make any racial comments or abuse my gymnast .No, I did not coach Elite Gymnastics, but I did coach recreational gymnastics which we competed in competition and I treated them all the same. Kim Zmeskal was one of my favorite gymnast that I followed her career. After seeing this I am totally disappointed and upset !!! I hope they get what they deserve this needs to be pushed through and heard !!! This type of coaching must stop !!!!

Whenever I read about these increasing cases of abuse that is being exposed, I can't help thinking that Simone was VERY fortunate to have landed at a gym with Aimee Borman and that Aimee herself after having a coach whose coaching style was not the best in her view, vowed to do differently. Today we see what that different approach has yielded, the BEST female gymnast the world has ever seen. I want to SALUTE Aimee for this because she made the CONSIOUS decision to coach differently than what she had experienced as a young gymnast. Sadly, Kim and others who went through the "Karoyli System' all looked at producing results and paid no attention to the damage they were causing along the way. SAD!

Unfortunately Kim has had major pull at USAG because of her relationship with the Karolyi's. They were abusive coaches that NBC would always spin as just the toughest coaches in Romania that lead Nadia to olympic gold... IDK why NBC would almost glorify the ranch, when in reality that place was filled with monsters verbally and physically abusing hundreds of gymnasts. IMO I think Maggie Haney is most definitely being made the scape goat. She 100 deserves to be suspended and face legal consequences, but so do many big name coaches that just get a free pass because of politics in the sport. Laurie Hernandez is a celebrity status athletes, so I'm sure that has a lot to do with the fact that USAG is being so harsh on Haney. They don't want to make their name any worse. Lastly, Kim's husband looks like a fucking creep and a half. Any parent that would let their child be coached by Chris must be blind, cause I sensed pedo from the moment I saw him.

I think that what Haney did was deserving of the repercussions she has received but I do think that there are those politically connected that get away with being just as bad or worse. They deserve to be investigated at the very least.
In any case what I have noticed is that gymnasts that want to get to the olympics need a certain level of coaching and it's not available everywhere, and to the gymnasts (who see other coaches at training camps and meets) won't take the risk to switch gyms even when it's bad, shows this culture is throughout many gyms. It seems obvious to me that the fact that Haney 'fit in' amoungst other coaches, ie gymnasts hesitated to leave her cause the alternative didn't seem better shows there are others like her and they should also be investigated like she was.

An elite gymnast knows the difference between discomfort and PAIN. My 2 cents: cut my kid's hair and you are gonna have to deal with me, and it ain't gonna be pretty. I had a coach comment about my kid's hair as being too long and I told him then he needed to pay for her hair appointments. He shut up. Seems elite coaches have forgotten who is paying the gym fees. Maybe elite parents need to organize.
Kim Z was trained by the Karolis and they are still not answering to all that they have done, knew, etc so there is that. It is all in who you know and who you align yourself with most likely. Maybe Haney was never really appreciated by the Karolis; thus not protected. John Geddert is described as 'the devil' by his past gymnasts and he he has escaped real trouble also.
Non-minority folks...don't make any type racists jokes. just as simple as that. now, if you are racist....go ahead and tell your jokes, but don't whine when you are called out for what you are. If you truly are not...then you already know not to make racist jokes.

Absolutely. Vanessa Atler developed an eating disorder because according to her, they started weighing her and other gymnasts out of nowhere. Then there’s the damn Comaneci release of the bars, which has been her Achilles heel for so long. During the 1999 US championships, she missed the release again and Steve was pissed and yelled at her…on National TV! According to Vanessa, he didn’t talk to her at all after the meet and that was when she decided to leave for WOGA. Needless to say, things didn’t get better for her there.
Also can you talk about Parkettes? All the coaches there are horrible to their gymnasts. They would weigh their athletes, berate them, yell at them and blaming them for poor performance. Look at Jennifer Sey’s book “Chalked Up” about her experience with Parkettes and look up “Searching for the Perfect Ten: Parkettes” on RUclips and you’ll see what I mean.

I have been watching a lot of old gymnastics videos...so disturbing..you watch how coaches react, not to when their gymnasts do well, but when they don’t. I see so many instances when (ie) the gymnast falls on the bars, and the coach turns and walks away in disgust..their is no concern there. The one that was scariest was a gymnast who fell on her routine-she was coached by Geddert. The look on his face was fury, not concern, not care...not surprising to hear he abused his gymnasts mentally and physically. So many horrible people in positions of power over the years. I really hope it’s changed.

I agree with a lot of the posters here. I also believe that Kim herself is confused and upset that she has never had an Olympic gymnast. In the back of her mind, she is remembering the 1992 Olympics and how Shannon Miller got the accolades that she was expecting to get herself. Beth Rybacki suffered from this too - she was a 1980 Olympian who used her gymnasts to fulfill the dreams that she had to give up. I bet that Vanessa and Jamie have some stories that they could tell too. Steve was part of Marta's inner circle for years. Are there any good coaches? Is it a lack of training? Anyone can open up a gym, it seems.

On a gut level I feel these behaviors stem more from ignorance than maliciousness. I think Chris legitimately believed he was being funny and some of his actions seem to be more in bad taste than truly abusive. Still concerning, but IMO most of this could be resolved by education. Versus Maggie is just a psychopath.

A grown man using racial slurs, making racist “jokes” or slave and master “jokes” to young black girls is not ignorance.
Let’s not play games here by dismissing deliberate racism as something coming from a place of ignorance and not malice.
The history of slavery is not funny. The emotional and psychological abuse from racism is not funny and never has been.
People have lost their jobs for saying less and not even to children.
He legitimately believed he was funny and he thought having no respect for black children as opposed to white children, was funny, regardless of they didn’t like it or made them feel inferior.
This is not resolved by education, even the most uneducated know better than to vocalize their racism publicly. He said these things to these young black girls because he knew he could get away with it.
This is resolved by enacting punishment.

I appreciate these videos. Kim was a fave of mine growing up so this is sad. But it’s true that abuse is a cycle and bullying is a learned behavior. I think that is a big problem in gymnastics right now. I would like to know about other gyms with problems.
While I agree it is a bit unfair that Maggie Haney is the only one being suspended I don’t think her claim of “scapegoating” is quite accurate (yes this is a dumb word choice comment, sorry). But that is when you are blamed for the actions of others. Haney is being punished for her own actions, but the punishment is not being given out evenly.
I would like to see all these coaches held accountable.

Does anyone know how official USAG investigations into coach abuse works? Does there have to be official claims made with them or with law officials to instigate an investigation or can the USAG simply investigate based on suspicion? There is a lack of USAG or organizational supervision in member gyms - are there watch groups that exist to aid families and athletes in a sport where coaches and clubs have so much power physically, financially, and with knowledge/expertise?

    ------- "CREATED BY THE SCANDAL"
NOTE---- NOT CREATED by ------ HIM! NOT created by the RUSSIAN , TYPICAL way of TRAINING that he SEES as "acceptable"!! that HE ONLY knows, that he grew up with, that
HE thinks is the --- "only way"!
    3) Did you NOTICE-- he had ZERO gymnasts at his OWN daughters invite! NOT ONE gymnast QUALIFY for -- Olympic trials!
It is like his WHOLE ELITE program --- just disappeared ! The MANY gymnasts that he had -- for YEARS!
Some people WILL TRY to say; he just "didn't have any athletes at that level"--- this is TOTAL GARBAGE!
He is covering himself-- period, any elites he had are now somewhere else!
The U.S.A,. gymnastics NEW board of directors, ALL the NEW leadership ( ALL!!!) are NO better than before!
They WILL DO ANYTHING for -- NASTIA, they DON'T want this to AFFECT -- her IMAGE , no bad PR that WOULD --- DEFINITELY affect her image !!
The WHOLE Chinese and Russian LARGE group of former gymnasts WHO ALL( yes --- ALL!!) OWN gyms and ARE getting WEALTHY--- are out there, TRYING to lay LOW!
Their WAY of training and treatment of athletes is---- ALL they -- KNOW, all they UNDERSTAND!
Haney -- is just the scapegoat, yes, she is very wrong, but she is NOTHING compared the Chinese and Russians who are NOT be targeted ----- VERY PURPOSELY.
Albert Azarian of So Cal has done a good job at KEEPING himself at arms distance from the abuse, even as he KNOWS- what goes on, but - he makes SURE there is NO DIRECT connection to him!

The coach really needs to be quiet. There is no need to banter with children when you don't do it well, and children don't understand adult jokes. He clearly has a communication problem. When certain people think they're funny, but are always offending people, I suspect undeveloped social skills. This is magnified by his work all day with children. They are not his peers or friends, but his clients. He needs to stick to the training and only directly instruct as to what needs to be done and what he wants his clients to do.

This is a fine example of whataboutism. It would be one thing if you were saying they all deserve the level of punishment, but you are using different cases of abuse to downplay the about of maggje and present her as a victim in her own way. The best way to finish this is just to remind everyone some things that were witnessed and revealed that Maggie Haney and Victoria Levine were up too while coaching. Just because Kim and her husband are pieces of shit doesn't mean maggie haney is being set to take the fall.
The girl asked the coaches to spot her. They would not, Levine citing a recent medical procedure she had undergone.
The gymnast tried the trick, fell, hitting her head on the equipment and then again on exposed cement before landing in a foam pit. Haney and Levine laughed at the girl in the pit until they realized she was having seizures, according to the mother and two other parents.
The girl had suffered two skull fractures. Her mother arrived at the hospital to find a chaplain near her daughter’s unconscious and lifeless-appearing body.
