  • Maggie Haney was suspended by USA Gymnastics for 8 years following an investigation and hearing that found that gymnasts at MG Elite experienced verbal, emotional and physical abuse while training under Haney. This video explores why Haney was banned and is based on published articles and TSL interviews with several families who trained at MG Elite.

    All of this is so much worse than I initially thought. The story around 24min is so scary and so is the fact that she threatened to commit suicide if her top gymnasts left her.... At this point I feel like she should have just been banned for life. This abuse is seriously extreme, and so is the emotional impact on these young girls

      It shows how nuts she is. She lacks a sense of healthy boundaries. That would follow to her personal life as well I'm sure. The suicide threat was to an adult- not a kid. The OC register is at the low end of journalistic integrity. They are the only game in town so people act like they deserve a pulitzer. By they I mean the gymternet. There is not much critical thinking going on. Who needs fact checking in the OC?

      Bellabell Sadly that is how most sport is at an elite level. If you are injured, unwell or just don’t perform there is always some other hopeful to take your place (no matter how abusive the situation). Bela and Marta’s abuse has been known for years, yet gymnasts continued to flock to them for a chance at the Olympic dream. Organisations like USAG like to virtual signal now and say they care for the athletes but as soon as they stop performing, they are discarded in favour of someone else. If abuse gets results, they will let it happen until enough important people (I.e top athletes and their parents) complain. This case is a prime example. And sadly, it will not be the last :/ the whole culture of elite sport needs to change, really.

They have been protected and likely are in the clear as far as what they have done in the past. I have been researching this sport since the mid 90s. In some countries it is worse than here. You would not believe what is done to very young children in some parts of the world. At least we reserve our worst treatment for the teens. LOL. Google "Chinese childhood documentary". @Matt Miller dude, the coach flat out REFUSED TO SPOT the gymnast, for a new, not mastered skill that this gymnast was scared to perform. The gymnast was pressured to go for the skill, even though she didn't feel safe doing it, she went for it, didn't perform it successfully, fell so hard and so unsafely that she FRACTURED HER SKULL. The coach then started laughing and making fun of the gymnast, instead of checking to see how she was doing.
      IN WHAT WORLD IS THAT OK ???

    • @cyntmacz
      @cyntmacz 4 года назад +3

      She should not have been made to do it so absolutely wrong but I have a feeling that is not the entire story because they most def would have sued. Not all gyms spot for everything but if someone says they need a spot- you need to listen to them. The mom said she was lifeless- that is the part of the story I am doubting. The chaplain was certainly not called for last rites. There was enough mental abuse and poor training tactics in this case already. There was no need to be dramatic and add the "chaplain" as that is not what happened obviously. She most def deserves this ban. Everyone is the U.S knew she would scream and berate her athletes. That has become very very clear and is old news. The isolating and gaslighting tactics goes on in the majority of elite gyms. It has always been allowed. We are talking about kids and they need a better environment. They are usually too young to understand what is happening to them as an elite in the situation. There should be an investigation into USAG in any case.

    • @cyntmacz
      @cyntmacz 4 года назад +8

      @Matt Miller I have to agree that by making an "example" of her they will likely turn a blind eye again. They will use this as proof that they are really trying to change the culture when in reality they are just trying to deflect from their own incredibly shady history. I don't think Haney will come back- at least not in the U.S. Likely USAG hopes she will vanish and along with that all their problems will too. They gave her just enough of a sentence that she would likely have a hard time coming back and everyone will think USAG does incredible work. Insiders will realize too soon that all the same problems still exist with very limited change in the "culture"

    Cool, we suspended a horribly abusive coach. It's better than nothing. But what of all the other coaches who have abused athetes? How about in addition to suspending a relatively new woman who gets ridiculed over her appearance, we suspend men (and women) who have controlled women's bodies and abused their psyches for so long?
    The Fongs come to mind. They are complete psychopaths. They fat-shamed, ignored injuries, psychologically destroy gymnasts, and ask their gymnasts if they are in relationships because they're not allowed to have boyfriends if they train there. And they have literally buried two gymnasts. The Rybackis were also exposed as sociopaths by Jamie Dantzscher. Laurent Landi was abusive towards Grace McLaughlin but he's hot and he's Simone's coach so I guess we can't do anything there. So many coaches are abusive, they need to be held accountable...or this is merely symbolic.
    The selfie and PC talk is annoying, but Tom Forster's biggest issue is not understanding the Code. He made excuses and acted surprised when the judges called the USA out. SOooo many dance elements should have been removed from US routines and the FIG made it clear they were going to come for them. Tom acted a fool and did nothing.

When you factor in the pink elephant of elites being children/teens...you end up deservingly being made an example of, w 8 years to sit in the corner and think about how you blew it.

    First, I want to thank you for your efforts in gathering information from multiple sources before you posted this video. It would have been easy to give a reaction last week when the sentence was initially announced. Second, after hearing the testimonies from Laurie Hernandez and the unnamed athlete who was having seizures after hitting her head on the uneven bars, while Maggie Haney and Victoria Levine stood laughing, I am just disgusted. As a former gymnast, I understand that coaches do need to give their athletes a little extra nudge in order to help them overcome their fears while training new skills. However, the coaching methods should not EVER compromise the safety and overall well-being of the athlete. True, there are some aches and pains that can be dealt with, but training gymnasts with fractured wrists and dislocated knees, among other injuries, is virtually the equivalent of striking the athlete with a sledgehammer to that respective body part. Additionally, the way that Maggie tried to discredit Riley McCusker's Rhabdomyolysis diagnosis is proof that Maggie Haney was looking for a way to absolve herself during this investigation. I'm sure more will come out against other top level coaches in the coming years, but I'm glad to see that SafeSport, along with USAG, is finally holding these adults accountable for their treatment of child athletes and indicating that the methodology of the past will no longer be tolerated.

    Mental abuse is rampant in sports. All levels... parents and athletes brainwashed into thinking that one coach is the secret to success.... parents need to keep communication open with athletes. I am a USAG coach, my daughter was a collegiate gymnast. I pulled her from an elite program when she was 12 when she threatened suicide. It was not even her that was being yelled at. It was the older girls... she knew her day would come. When she finally got to college... under the guise that it would be “fun”.... it was a nightmare. She was at Penn State , post Bastardi and Shephard, although they were the coaches that recruited her. She was despised by the new husband/wife team coaches who were wrought with abusive behavior. My daughter was the first to file a complaint against them... fat shaming, isolation, having team members ostracize and ridicule her.... I watched my confident winner get pounded into an anxious depressed kid.... and the minions who kissed the coaches butts would make comments like she was not tough enough.... horrible. NO.. my daughter was not use to being coached by people who would launch personal attacks when she didn’t have a stick body and mistakes were made.... she ended up getting released from her scholarship. During her time at PSU, she was put on Ambien, antidepressants, and would starve herself to improve her thinness.... total BS.... I cringe when I see that this coach thinks he was defamed.... he and his wife caused PTSD for many Auburn gymnasts AND PSU gymnasts.... I was warned before she ever left for college by both a former collegiate athlete and a colleague. At that point it was too late to rethink about the PSU commitment.

    It will be interesting what effect will this suit and potential change in coaching methods have on the US WAG performance in coming years. I don’t condone child abuse at any rate but feel like trying to compensate for the methods now coming to light can very easily slip off to such freedom and care that the athletes will lose their edge.
    Sport is hard. And whether we want it to be so or not, appearance is important in gymnastics, not only in terms of esthetics but also for health (pressure on joints while doing all the cool tricks, etc.).
    It will definitely be an interesting period before us. I wish the coaches find a happy median and dont sacrifice results and excellence to being too lenient. Finding the right balance is what makes coaching difficult, afterall.

Even in modern times they would not have served time. I think Haney has a disorder in the sense that she will not really ever change. I don't think she should be able to come back. It is in the team handbook that gymnasts must train while injured and everyone knew she was verbally abusive. You are wasting time with your criminal charge idea. Unless of course something else comes out. I have to say I don't know anyone who has served time for gaslighting and verbal abuse of teenagers. They need to look at the way the NCAA scholarships are rewarded. This will be key to making any changes overall. One phone call from one coach should not be able to end an athletes chances. This is clearly a huge piece of the puzzle. Blacklisting of gymnasts from other gyms and shutting down their NCAA dreams needs to be looked at under the microscope. This is a very long response, but I think it deserves some attention. I was a gymnastics coach for 20 years and retired because i finally realized the monster it had become. Or perhaps the monster it always was.
    There is no reason why a new organization can't be formed using the right people. By that I mean people who are currently meaningful to the gymnastics community. An orginization which is completely and totally void of ex-ousted board members who got us all here in the first place. But there is a problem which needs to first be addressed, the culture and sub-culture of suppression.
    Keep one thing in mind, the bad guys have never needed to outnumber us to win or wreak havok on this industry and destroy lives. So right now it doesn't matter how many good guys and girls there are in the sport. If nassar and guys like penney could do what they did, guess what the rest of the coaches on that list and the ones we don't know about have already done?
    Right now even as i write this email, people who are committing high degree indescretions are being treated with leniency, and others like Haney who are not nearly as bad are getting the third degree and careers and reputations publicly destroyed. Therefore the culture and subculture of suppression within USAG and privaye club gymnastics is alive and well--and morphing to adjust and adapt to the new process which is now in place. Gym owners are vicariously liable for what their coaches do and don't do.
    The severe treatement of lessor wrongs is a diversion tactic to draw away from the ones they are lenient to, due to the insidious political agendas of current USAG board members and private club owners who are currently orchestrating a PR campaign which serves only them and not the true interest and protection of the children and athletes. Many of which are completely under the radar. Everybody including the media is talking about the heinous treatment toward Haney, or how awful she is or was as a coach, but others far worse who are currently on the USAG suspended members/members with restrictions list--which is buried on the USAG website--who have already commited sexual abuse are being treated in a gentile manner and are not given nearly the attention that Haney has recieved thus far. All of which are briefly protected by the likes of an attorney--who says he supports SafeSport...and then turns around and defends coaches acccused of sexual abuse and then SafeSport becomes his adversary whom he undermines. He's playing both sides and no one either see's it or they just don't care.
    For over thirty years the gymnastics governing body, led by Steve Penny, who was caught red handed covering up evidence of sexual abuse, lied about the Ted Stevens Act and refused to ban coaches accused of sexual abuse. Now, Haney comes along and the NGB bans her for 8 years because she is a mean coach? And her accusations also came in verbally just like the sexual assults did? Kinda odd isn't it?
    LiLi, the now CEO, feels like she's showing how much and how well the NGB is willing to protect the athletes by keeping the suspened and restricted members list buried on the USAG website.
    The lack of transparency within the ranks of USAG board members and private club owners is a mockery to those victims and shows what the heart of USAG and private club gymnastics is all about. You would have to know the list even exists in the first place to know to look for it. Do you know how many gyms and coaches out there who do not know that list exists? A lot.
    Why isn't the list on the front page of USAG where it should be? Why hasn't it made the news? Why did they bury it in the about section of the website? When you start asking the right questions you start realizing some very interesting things. No one and no private club or gym in their right mind is going to risk catastrophic financial losses or catastrophic loss of reputation--which could easily and directly cause financial loss--and risk losing their business by reporting sexual abuse. It is easier to harbor and protect the perpetrator within a private club or university and convince everyone that its all just one big misunderstanding than it is to take a massive financial loss and have your reputation, business and ego destroyed in the process. Hence, everyone contributes to the culture and subculture of suppression, out of either fear of loss or because they were a victim of indoctrination via gym owners convincing employees of their own truths. The threat of loosing everything compels people to supress the crime.
    This culture and subculture of supression within the gymnastics community will not be cured by SafeSport rules, classes or education, or any laws that make reporting abuse to the authorites mandatory. I am proof that reporting a coach and catching him red handed does nothing. It is all to playcate foolish people to build the PR and consumer confidence back up so that USA isn't embarrased at the next olympics.
    To find the USAG suspended members/members with restrictions list, go to the USAG website and find the ABOUT tab. To the left of the web page you will see a list. Among that list you will find the page for the suspended members/members with restrictions list. The list used to show which city AND state the coach is from, but now only shows the state.
    Of course it is ludicrous to expect everyone to be privy to the con game of sexual predators. I understand that preventative measures can flatten the curve. Nonetheless prevention has limits and will never stop abuse. Hence, why wait for someone to divulge abuse? Instead, the goal should include a process that assumes abuse will happen according to the statistics, and we should be able to discover that abuse within the first year that it begins to occur or has occurred. Third party intervention is the answer in terms of identifying problems. It should not be left to constituents of the sport. Hence, inspections for clubs and sports programs and certifications for individual athletes. Once this is understood then you can work to solve the problems accordingly. Prevention is good but prevention is only one out of three. Leaving out the other two falls short.

If you think this is bad, read up on what happened to the East German Olympic female swim team back in 1972-76. I suspect that the same tactics allegedly used by Haney and the Karoli's are used in Communist China, Russia, Romania, and other nations and have been for decades. Winning is all that counts.
    Back in my day, coaches were rough and you were bullied, punished, and treated like crap if you didn't live up to their expectations. If you played one sport but didn't play another, you were bullied by the coach of the sport you didn't play. That stuff still goes on today. Coaches are suspended to this day because of how they treat their players/team in football, basketball, etc. The old drill sergeant days still exist, but fans overlook it because of the success of certain teams in football or basketball. Naturally the old drill sergeant coaches explained their methods by saying they were trying to make men out of boys.
