How would Maggie know if her athletes were Nassar victims or not? Just because none of them have come forward doesn't mean it didn't happen to them. Just because she was around them all the time doesn't mean Nassar didn't still manage to abuse them. Nassau got extremely brazen over the decades and would abuse athletes right in front of coaches and parents.

Wow! The most scary and intimidating things are, in my opinion, that current MG parents are protecting Maggie Haney and the coaching staff members from all allegations. If there are ongoing allegations in terms of physical and mental abuse of former gymnasts; it has to be taken seriously! Glad if your child was not affected by any abusive behavior or coaching style (yet) - but telling the "good" things and your personal experience about the gym doesn't make it better. Individual cases from former athletes have nothing to do with their own experiences. They really try to neutralize the happenings. That's definitely not the right way to approach this issue! Also, nobody asks the children how they (!) really feel as gymnasts everyday. The most scary thing is that it's actually the parents - especially in this video - who want to live their dreams through their children: Being famous and a potential parent of an olympian athlete.

@@fiedledey437 I do understand the point of frustration. Also, I do understand that some MG parents and children might have experienced completely differently . But how do parents know what exactly happened inside and outside of the gym? Especially in regard to former and/or other elite gymnasts. I honestly don't think that they can judge from a neutral perspective - since their perspective is biased on personal experiences regarding their children, training groups, staff members etc. That's the reason why (independent) investigations are necessary that there are no false allegations. A few positive parents' statements about the gyms' atmosphere or the supportive and professional coaching style do not proof all abuse allegations of former athletes to be false. That's the point here.

  • @lizzie7654
    @lizzie7654 3 года назад +9

I think the point you made about 'neutralising' claims is so good. So many times it's like 'well that other gymnast said she's great' but even if someone is great to some people it doesn't mean the abuse they do to another is somehow then okay, or shouldn't be taken seriously.

I’ve read all these stories and didn’t even realize that I went through the same thing the entire time. I was not a gymnast, I was a competitive swimmer, albeit a crap one. But if my coach wasn’t satisfied with my kicking in the water he would drag me to a room off the pool and beat me up with my swim fins. If I failed to keep up with my record, he would be waiting at the end of the pool and pushed my head underwater until I couldn’t breathe. Well... I wasn’t and would never be a relevant athlete, and I quit a long time ago, but that’s my story, I guess. It’s scary how normalized it is in Korea. No one even talks about it

I remember back when i was young, i had an abusive coach in gymnastics. He would scream and yell at the girls, including me. He would force us to become more flexible by physically pushing us. And he would work us to the bone even when injured, it would come to a point where we were so overworked at practice that we would become clumsy and get hurt. I ended up quitting because the coach was abusive, parents interfered and confronted him about his behavior. Almost the entire team quit and then he got fired. Abuse comes in many different forms and it is important to realize where to draw the line between “encouragement and repetition” and “overworking with zero regards” because it is traumatic. I feel bad for these girls because i know part of what they have gone through. No one deserves to go through any abuse or manipulation.

I could write a novel on the abuse that is perpetrated on young athletes in the name of being the best. Long story short... there is not a single title, competition or medal worth the damage that is being done to these kids! KIDS!
And I’m talking about all aspects... physical damage, injuries, physical and sexual abuse, the mental pressures, the emotional pressures and abuse and their overall happiness! I want to see the medal that is worth the damage done to these very talented athletes?
If any coach/parent/former athlete can hold up a medal and say, face to face, “this medal was worth my soul”, I want that same person to face the athletes, their family and friends, hold up that same medal, and loudly announce “I’m willing to sacrifice everyone’s spirit and self worth to get one athlete to win this medal”. That’s not an event I’m concerned with penciling in on my calendar, because no one has the nerve to be that transparent with their goals!

If it was easy for parents to speak up about their children being mistreated/abused without the high possibility that your child will be blocked from all other elite coaches, have their scholarship(s) and their lives ruined. Then I would agree.
However, as I stated in my video, the system is not set up to protect gymnasts. So I will not act like it’s such an easy decision or that parents also aren’t put in a terrible situation.
And as I stated in the video, there is a level of parental responsibility and some parents were aware of what was going on in the gym.
This is all true, but I am still objective enough to realize everything is not one-dimensional for the parents and their decisions.
Jessica McCusker keeping Riley enrolled while working behind the scenes to get Haney investigated is a prime example of that.
I am glad you brought this up, because I am working on a video about parental culpability in gymnastics abuse.

"Only I have the power to bestow this to you and no one will believe you,"
People will stick. You gotta stay in abusive and unbalanced relationships for once to understand the psyche on how hard is to just go out from such relationships

For me this is not right at all. When we are talking about a minor you don't sue only the coach but first on the line are the parents who do anything and everything to get into the team.I won't respect anyone's opinion if it comes to only the coach is wrong for me as a parent I would have been on top of that and I would have addresses everything from the very beginning. It's like I accuse somebody that he is a criminal but I am pushing my kid towards that. That's bullshit .Parents grow up and coaches get psychologically educated about kids/ athletes.

@@g.g9158coaches don’t necessarily flinch all the time. Falls is pretty common in our sport. I’ve asked myself why I flinch at some and not others and don’t have an exact answer. Maybe because some mistakes have a more permanent idea in my head of what’s bad and what I know is likely to be ok as gymnasts are trained how to crash. I personally don’t know Maggie but I’m not going to judge it on whether she flinched or not as I see coaches not flinch in competition throughout my 32 years in this sport. Denying a child a wellness check that the athlete is ok or not is where I would draw the line.
