  • Mattie Larson impacted the world at the sentencing hearing for Larry Nassar with her emotionally intelligent, honest and courageous victim impact statement. I had a chance to catch up with the 2010 World silver medalist and UCLA alumni about her career, her views on the sport of gymnastics, the USA Gymnastics system and how she has been able to heal and move forward in her life.

    Mattie is so easy to love. True gym fans will never forget her beautiful 2010 floor routines at nationals. If anything we need to make sure these young women are cared for and protected and allowed to flourish, or fail and learn from it without being berated or discounted.

    Such a treat. I remember her so well from her floor exercise. It was so far more artistic and sassy than any others plus with perfect execution of the difficult moves. I watched that so many times. I always thought she would go to the Olympics. And so beautiful! I had no idea of her horrible experiences that so many gymnasts had to endure. You are so brave Mattie! You have so much to offer the world with your beautiful spirit. Great interview Dave! Plus great work advice;)

    We were at 2008 Olympic Trials and that's where Mattie came onto my radar. I remember my mom and I discussing after each day of competition who we thought would make the team and the ONLY reason we didn't think she would that year is because we had so many veterans who were further along in their gymnastics development & experience. We agreed that Mattie, if she was healthy and wanted to, could EASILY make the next Olympic team because she was that impressive! Gorgeous gymnastics. So sad to hear what happened after that.

    Mattie, you are a beautiful person inside and out. It’s such a shame that so many gymnasts , skaters, athletes spend so much time and pain to get to an elite status but as you say, only .0001% make it to the Olympics and if they do, God forbid, only get fourth and even a Silver medal. Plus, have such a negative memory of all their sacrifices to do something that they once loved to do when they first started as kids. With all our experiences growing up, good and sometimes horrendous, we become stronger wiser and more resilient. Mattie, You’ll find yourself soon enough and find something you’ll love again. Carpe Diem!

    I really appreciated this interview! I remember years ago, I wondered what happened to Mattie after 2010 because I really liked her gymnastics. Like many other US gymnasts I was sad to hear what they experienced when the cameras weren’t rolling, and i don’t blame Mattie for leaving that environment and feeling jaded about it.
    I can definitely relate her talking disordered eating and over training since that was my case in my respective sport which left me feeling very upset and jaded when I finish my athletic career broken and feeling like I had nothing to show for it.
    I teach tumbling recreationally to 5-7 year olds. With all of the USAGs dirty laundry (as well as other nations whose problems haven’t quite made it mainstream) to light, it made me wonder about the future of gymnastics and how programs can create a healthy training environment.
    I think in general, many sports programs are in need of a reset button and need FUN to be prioritized over winning and body aesthetics.

    Dave, you have an amazing way of connecting with former athletes and I felt Mattie was comfortable to tell you a side of her story without filter and from her heart. CNN did an interview with Verona Van De Leur recently, it was just on the surface of what I I feel is also a story of vindication. I just book her book on amazon! Sometimes I feel like 99 % of the adults in the world of elite gymnastics (or even skating) are trash!!

    I wonder what's her opinion on nastia liukin - she did an interview in 2018 ( a rly horrible one, u can find it on youtube ) after Mattie's testimony and her condescending tone in the interview was just awful. I know she wanted to defend her dad bc mattie named him in her testimony but she basically lied abt how Valeri never coached her when he was the head coach of the 2010 worlds silver medal team, and was one of the adults who ignored mattie after her mistakes in the team final.

      @simonsenecal6560 4 года назад +1

      Honestly Mattie should not have been on the 2010 worlds team. As much as I like her gymnastics she didn't add anything to the team. She wasn't used on vault, bars, and beam, and floor could a strong team without her. They should have instead brought Vanessa Zampirro, that ex NCAA girl who had an amazing Cheng and would have added a ton to their score on vault. It just looked like an even worse decision when Mattie messed up her only event in team finals. It does not mean she deserved to be bullied, that was horrible, but I think Marta and all the others just realized she should not have been there, but that was Marta's field for picking her for the team in the first place which many questioned.

      simon senecal she was 2nd AA & 1st on floor at nationals that year, that’s why she was chosen, bc she had the potential, but unfortunately she made mistakes. that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t hv been on the team? like mckayla maroney was also chosen as the 5th member of the fierce five bc she was basically a guaranteed gold but she fell during the EF. mistakes happen lol

    So, great interview, and you're a great interviewer, Dave. You have such a solid grounding in the deep background of the sport, you know the right questions to ask. Question: is Mattie's grandfather the TV producer Glen A. Larson, who produced the original Battlestar Galactica, the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew, and BJ and the Bear (and other shows) back in the '70s/'80s? I could swear Al or someone on NBC offhandedly mentioned this, and I tried to follow up but can't nail it down. Mattie's father is named Eric and there are two Eric Larsons listed in imdb, one of whom is Glen's son and the other married Mattie's mother, but it's unclear if they're the same one.
    Anyway, very impressed with Mattie in this interview. She really seems healthy. The last I'd "seen" her was at Larry's sentencing and (quite understandably) she seemed in a really bad place there. Mattie, we love you and are so glad to see you doing better. And yes! You have a great voice for VO work.

    I have listened to a few other interviews but unfortunately when I saw Maddie Larson’s name I said ‘OMG this is going to be retelling of USA Gym is evil’ and the interviewer had that bias (IMO.) It was very refreshing to hear that her entire life was not destroyed By Larry Nasser. I have seen so many things said about her how it was ‘all Larry it was all Larry it was all Larry.’ I was just so tired of everyone painting her as a Larry Nassar Uber victim because of her statement At the trial and forgetting we are all the product of many experiences. Whenever her Rotterdam experience was mentioned some people automatically were going directly to ‘but Larry but Larry.’ It was very refreshing to hear her say it was a combination of a lot of factors.It’s nice that she’s moving forward with her family and she’s had some resolution with her past with her coaches. I’m glad she can give people new perspective that is not readily available on message boards for other people to know her story now. Because for years it’s often been endless victimization of her of how ‘Larry did this Or that’ or ‘Marta was the whole problem with everything.’ I wish her good luck going forward.
