  • This is the first segment of a two part series covering the multitude of problems taking place at Texas Dreams. This segment will analyze their history of injuring their gymnasts at an unusual rate.
Many gymnasts start off with highly competitive NCAA offers and later have to settle for subpar offers because the top university no longer wants to accept them.
Many gymnasts have spoken out on Kim's overtraining and ignoring pain, as well as more disturbing allegations that will be covered later this week.

Injuries certainly happen in elite sports but there seems to be a clear pattern at Texas Dreams with the elites and national team members. It’s the pattern that is what should be raising some eyebrows with USAG. In my opinion, USAG should be responsible for seeing the red flags and identifying what is contributing to this pattern. Were the coaches not referring the gymnasts to medical care because they are incompetent, ignoring the gymnasts, abusive, too arrogant in their knowledge (or lack of) about injuries, too pressured to get their gymnasts to the top or think short term, not pacing them appropriately, reluctant to refer to Nassar (how much did they actually know or not know at the time?), or were they referring to Nassar thinking the injuries were getting treated? There are too many questions that should’ve been answered years ago when this pattern was emerging. Some of the responsibility should also fall on Kim and Chris. Did they not see this pattern? What did they do about it?

This is the way the Karoli's trained Kim. It's probably the only way she knows. As an elite gymnast myself in the early 80's, I was treated the same way by some of my coaches. With the Karoli's being the leading coaches of USAG for so long they set the precedent for all of the other coaches. There needs to be a reeducation campaign for these top level coaches on what is not acceptable treatment of these child athletes. They are doing what they think will motivate the gymnasts in the present and not considering the long term mental health. I developed an eating disorder when our team was weighed everyday. I watched as other gymnasts were shamed for gaining a pound or two. It scared me and I vowed to never be accused of being fat. So at 15 I began to restrict my calories and eventually it developed into anorexia / bulimia. It ruined my career and my life until I had my first child at 28. I love gymnastics, but there has to be consequences for the mental abuse of these kids. They are too precious.

Yes Kym was trained under the cruelty and abuse of Bella BUT as an adult you know the difference between right and wrong. As an adult it is your responsibility to BREAK those cycles and not to reinforce them or re enact them out. Kym started her coaching under a brilliant lady so there is no way she learnt that abuse as an early coach. What we have here is Kym following and imitating her own gymnastic methods, which clearly left the majority of gymnasts broken and fatigued, starved and malnutritioned.
Dominique Moceanu wasn’t very old when she wrote her tell all story about the abuse behind the scenes. Kym is older than Dominique. The difference is Dominique has researched and educated herself on the correct methods of coaching. Surely Kym and her husband should have/ could have educated themselves before starting up a business. Not only is it their livelihood, their reputation on the mound but all of those little girls who stepped through that door were the responsibility of the coaches. I have always admired Kym and I would have thought she would have NEVER EVER wanted her own gymnasts to go through what she and many others endured at the hands of the Karolyis.
Ignorance, laziness and the greed to re live Olympic dreams through younger gymnasts is NOT an excuse or abuse and injure your athletes. Make coaches pass mandatory exams on coaching, which include the dangers of pushing too hard, the dangers of burning out these athletes, especially about injuries and psychological effects that they are having on the gymnasts. These clubs all need mandatory monitoring as a requirement to remain open. Random testing, interviewing gymnasts and their medical records. This form of abuse can no longer be acceptable. No matter who or how successful these coaches are. Being a great gymnast is not ENOUGH to walk into a coaching position. I wonder if they would allow their own children to be subjected to the same coaching they give everyone else’s kids?
Shame and name all those involved. Not just a handful but them ALL.

I never thought for a second that she was abusive. Ragen Smith is doing really well in college as a gymnast. I want to SALUTE Aimee for this because she made the CONSIOUS decision to coach differently than what she had experienced as a young gymnast. I think there should be more training and qualifications needed for those coaching elite gymnasts for sure. Maybe even diploma in muscular skeletal or physio studies that focus on understanding injuries and impact of conditioning.
Also a culture where gymnasts pain is listened to. If you are already an elite, you are serious about gymnastics. You are not some child being dramatic to get a day off when you say you're in pain. Coaches often expect their athletes to blindly trust them but need to trust their athletes just a little ie when they say it hurts believe them.

Valeri has been accused of abuse by Katelyn Ohashi and Vanessa Atler. According to Katelyn, he would kick girls out of the gym for gaining weight which might have been the cause of Katelyn developing an eating disorder. Vanessa was already battling an eating disorder by the time she got to WOGA. Valeri made everything worse for her by weighing her and overtraining her.
It makes me think about what happened to Rebecca Bross. If you look at what happened at the 2012 Olympic trials after she fell off the bars three times and stopped her from completing the routine, he does nothing to comfort her even when she’s clearly upset. To me, the only athlete he cared for was Nastia because she’s his daughter, obviously. Any other gymnast he treats like nothing. After that, he didn’t talk to her for a while and she made the decision to leave their gym and go to WOGA. She didn’t want to disappoint anybody even though she really wanted to quit because it was no longer fun. At the Olympic trials where she was failing (to be fair, a lot of gymnasts were making mistakes and falling, even the ones who eventually made it to the team) and it was either Valeri or her agent that told her on night two before the competition that she wasn’t on the team because she was fat! I think the injury problem can be linked to their massive elite program. TD always has so many elites and it’s almost like they handle them all the same. Elite gymnastics needs to be extremely personalized in order for the gymnast to gain their full potential. It also allows for gymnasts to gain unique skills that fit their style. Go watch Ragans 2016 floor compared to Baileys 2015 routine. There basically the same. They are treating elite gymnasts like it’s just another level. I have to add the Kennedy Baker situation was a little worse than I stated. This is the situation where Kim made her crawl to get ice out of (what she implied to be) annoyance, didn't check on her injury and she was in a cast the next day. Perhaps I should've added her entire statement for context.

Are you as a supposed know it all commentator not using Kim’s face to get likes, her name to get likes, her background of being at the highest level in Gymnastics World wide for many years to get likes. You are using her yourself just as you are portraying Elite coaches using their gymnasts up. Your commentating in this video is very abusive. Defamation of Character at the very least. Perhaps she should look into suing you. Can you trust the allegations of the girls as the gospel truth. If the girls are so smart as to know what injury abuse looks like, why were they not smart enough or their parents to simply move to the Competitive neighboring gym right down the road. You can say well they were only young girls, well young girls make many mistakes and decisions they have to live with later in all walks of life. It’s a fact of life we all are one step forward and 2 steps back. We would all give up if it wasn’t for sheer drive and determination to push through it all. True the coaching test have been around since the Stone Age. Most coaches know a 100 times what the test covers. For your info the test is for young brand new coaches. It’s very basic just like a basic gym class is. The test covers the basics and that’s it. Many coaches choose to stay at that level forever. A few choose to dive deep and they and their students have test after test called competitions and judges score them. If you aren’t coaching well it shows in the scores. If you as a gymnast are not scoring well then maybe it’s not your sport. Elite Coaches and gymnasts are constantly learning something new ever single morning and evening practice. The dedication is ginormous. Conditioning as you say injures gymnasts, I gotta laugh at that backwards hillbilly statement. It is conditioning that keeps Gymnast’s healthy 🤣 It keeps Gymnast’s from getting injured😂 I think your brain might just be injured😂 Kim is doing just fine because she is driven just as she was as a gymnast. Sure she and all Elite coaches make PLENTY of mistakes and are sorry for them and they learn from the mistakes as well. Elite coaches can’t be responsible for all the issues that go wrong for the many gymnasts that walk through their doors. All they can do is offer to the gymnast what they are capable of at this time in their life and that’s it. When the gymnasts and their parents don’t like it they can make an educated choice to move along to the next high level gym and there are several in every State. All high level coaches make mistakes, all gymnasts and their parents make mistakes, nobody’s perfect EVER! You too have made plenty of mistakes throughout this video. Plenty of people will think you are telling the gospel truth and you aren’t. One big plus USAG has done is put a stop 🛑 to sexual abuse which also happens in all sports, at schools, churches and anywhere where teens are present. It’s working in its infancy. One of my complaints is the time it takes to investigate can be as long as 3 years. Now that’s a huge mistake isn’t it. I’m sure this long time frame will be cut down as adjustments are made. So yes our sport has plenty of problems just as any sport and we are working on them always improving.
Last, without Bela and Martha Karolyi, USA gymnastics would be hardly recognizable at the Olympic. We would be a Country not even talked about. No one would come and watch our high level girls much at all. TV networks would hardly be interested in us. Our top gymnasts would not be recognized World wide. Our top gymnasts would not get endorsements, or commercial ads. Our gym facilities would be smaller and our classes smaller. Gym owners would not make the money they do today in the USA. You can give all that “what we have” to
B E L A AND M A R T H A KAROLYI!!!!!!! We have wonderful Russian coaches now and they would have moved to other Countries, thanks to Bela and Martha they came here. They too realized Bela and Martha had created a Gold Rush in gymnastics in the USA. So we would be a shadow of a sport without THE KAROLYI’s. Our College Programs are Dynamite and on fire right now all thanks to the Karolyi’s lighting a FIRE 🔥 FOR USA GYMNASTICS long ago. Today we REEP ALL THOSE BENEFITS THANKS TO KIM ZMESCAL’s, Coach Keri Strug’s coach, Betty OKINO’s coach, Nadia Comaneci’s coach, Phoebe Miles coach, Mary Lou Retton’s coach, and Dominique Moceanu’s Coach, Kristi Phillips and Shelly Stack and many, many more I’ve forgotten and you apparently know absolutely nothing about that. The Karolyi’s taught our first set of Olympic Coaches how to navigate at their first Olympics without losing valuable points and costing our USA team awards and recognition. Bela himself making the first mistake with Nadia. He forgot to pull the board and their Team lost .3 tenths at his first Olympics, imagine how bad he must have felt and the girls and parents. Coaches make mistakes but they learn from them all just like their gymnasts. I’m truly sorry for these X Texas Dream gymnasts but Kim took them a very long way in the sport when she too was a very young Elite Coach. She and they were all doing the best they could, it just wasn’t good enough, so be it, that’s life. LIVE AND LEARN!

I am a GAY male who has followed gymnastics forever. I love when my friends tell me gay jokes. I am not offended by it. The world has gone mad. And gymnastics has already suffered and will only get worse after this. The sport is barely watchable as it is. No artistry and so many large and bulky girls. Sorry NOT sorry. Even the 10 year old girl IN the video SAYS the word sarcasm and knows the difference what Chris was saying! The sport has gone downhill and now every girl in every country is going nuts now and causing drama. So expect the sport to get and look worse than it already does. Not everyone can make the olympics or Worlds. Only a few spots. So if you do not wanna watch your figure or if you are naturally fat then go EAT and stop whinning and let the OTHERS on the team! No one has to DO Anything if they do not want to! Switch gyms then if you think it is the coach fault! Or quit! Or go eat if you wanna eat and not train and get fat! No one is forcing you to do anything! People reach the top level of sport and push them selves to get there to BE the BEST! If you do not want to then that is fine! Just get out of the way! If these coaches are all so so bad then why are half the girls not complaining?! They make Bela and Marta out to be MONSTERS now but you do not hear from ALL Karolyi girls that it was THAT bad. I am not saying some changes do not need to be made but my god this just goes on and on and on where we are reaching a point where EVERY coach now is under a microscope and everyone is being looked at like in this video to be fired or accusations. All these girls are coming out of the woodwork for 5 years now and it is never ending. The sport is already almost unwatchable in the last 5 years anyway. Gymnastics was so so much better before. And many of the top girls you do not hear complaining from. Mary Lou. Shannon MIller. Kim Zmeskal. Nastia. etc... Why are these people then not going after ALL the coaches in China? In Russia? etc?! Let us just IMPLODE the sport more than it already is. And let us also have 150lb girls to watch by the next olympics with no floor music like the men cuz why bother?! Just a bunch of victim mentality in the world now not just in sports. Everything is someone else's fault. As if people are ALWAYS perfect. And as if these so called victims are also perfect in THEIR own lives?! Uh huh. Right. I am sure they have never had a bad thought about someone or swore at someone or anything....
