- Giorgia Villa has injured herself at Italian Championships and has been pulled out of the Olympics. Tokyo is under lockdown and has the governor has banned spectators from Tokyo stadiums.

How would they stay save? They need competitions to prepare for such a big event. And injuries can happen all the time, especially in training. So saying that doing competitions before olympics is stupid, is in my opinion really stupid.

@@yanniklehner917 yeah but not this close to the Olympics. Imagine that literally a few days later they were supposed to leave for Japan. A competition like the US Olympic Trials, which was a month from the Olympics was good
Oh please it was added stress, there is a reason they rest up for a while and do camps instead of competitions basically everywhere else, because athletes tend to push themselves, and they can make mistakes, but in camps they dont feel like they need to do their best, its just practice, they can ease up to peak in the actual competition, thats why i think having a competition this close is a bad idea and she may have not been injured had it been in another date.

Having nationals a week or so before the biggest event of these young people's lives, which comes around at most only once in 4 years ---- a one time event for about 99.5% of these people ---- makes absolutely no sense. The only thing a nation should do in those couple months should be to conduct the Olympic trials for two sets of people, the Olympians and the alternates.
This is a BIG blow to Italy! I just wish ALL the athletes from EVERY discipline would remain injury free from now until the end of the Olympics. It has been such a trying year since the Olympics has been postponed (rightly so) that I can't help thinking how much of a bigger blow it is for an athlete to have come through 2020 and reach so close to making it to the actual games only to lose it all at this crucial stage. GHEEZ!
Hey atleast Tokyo is being proactive and not just thinking about lining their pockets with money and possibly infecting the whole stadium

Honestly thank god the pandemic olympics were set to be hosted in a very rich country like japan that can handle the loss.....would be a total disaster if a poor country faced this situation
I’m so sad for Giorgia! That’s awful. But I won’t pretend that I’m not excited that Vanessa will be on the team and we get to see more of her gymnastics. She is a special fave of mine. 🇮🇹✨💚🤍❤️

Poor Georgia, it must feel terrible to get so close and then get injured. Shout out to Vanessa Ferrari who will compete at her 4th Olympics - after Beijing, London and Rio
And Italy probably wondered why so many people thought it was dumb to hold nationals so close to the Olympics 🤦♀️. They probably get it now...
My personal favorites were how after she got hurt, they then decided not to have the Olympians do the power events on the last night of competition. Because, you know, injuries only happen on floor and vault 🤦♀️ And how Vanessa was just like peace out suckers, I am not doing nationals when I need to be getting ready to fly to Tokyo. And now she’s on the team. It’s a tragic comedy. I am also so sad for Giorgia, she was endangered by her federation and it cost her the chance to complete at the Olympics 😢.
Damn, no spectators. All those buildings and arenas built that will never be used. No recouping the costs either. Japan lost big time.

I just cannot get behind no crowd at the Olympics; it’s unimaginable. If you are still afraid of covid a year and a half into this: stay home. Take your health into your own hands.

i don’t think it’s a matter of being afraid of covid but rather a very small % of japanese population is vaccinated and the country is in a state of emergency now lol having no spectators isn’t fun but this is just the government thinking of the athletes and the crowds

If people cannot see the way that Covid and is implications have changed the world, they are blind. This is just another step in the degradation of humanity today; it sounds dramatic but it’s true. The world is not the same place and drastic steps like this have real consequences. I suppose it’s opinion but at this point, I feel that the impacts to quality of life and our global community are greater than the risks of spreading Covid itself. You can see it in the way people treat each other every day and the cultural shifts that have arisen over the past year and a half. At some point it’s going to be too late to get a handle on this stuff. Call me crazy if you want.

The worst part of this is they are going to have media teams with the parents and family members so instead of watching as many routines as possible we will have to watch all this hoopla and only get to see US members!
I’m fine with most of the restrictions in Japan, except for testing daily. If a gymnast gets a false positive, there’s nothing they can do about it except get tested 3 times consecutively and have the negatives outweigh the positives. Have them get vaccinated or test weekly.
If they aren't vaccinated yet, it's too late to do it & be fully vaccinated for the start of the Olympics. Also, most are already enroute to Japan. I know the US gymnasts are, as of this morning.

Our obsession with sports is literally killing people. Waiting till summer of 2022 is the loving choice
It's not an obsession with sports, athletes are working professionals too and do what they do to make a living
On top of that a lot of athletes have had to postpone their retirements/future plans as it is already. So having the Games without foreign spectators and greater restrictions is actually the fairest option.

Does Italy not select alternates? Why is the individual athlete replacing Giorgia?
because its the most logical step. vanessa actually adds to the team similar scoring as giorgia did, although on different apparatus so it makes sense to do this. also, Lara coming 2nd at the world cups means shes capable of making the floor final as well if she performs well, and italy doesnt necessarily have other gymnasts in that same position. Someone like Desiree Corafiglio could have been a strong choice, but i believe she is injured as well
I assumed there were specific rules set for how team members could be replaced by alternates versus individual athletes, but I haven't done any actual research about it. Or maybe it's because the Olympics haven't actually started.
The other girls who won the bronze in Stuttgart, Desiree Carofiglio and Elisa Iorio, also suffered from injuries in the past year and they came back to compete only this week. Also one of the strongest gymnast in Italy right now is Angela Andreoli, but I think she'll be a senior only next year, so it was a reasonable, if not the only, choice to put Vanessa!
It would also be a good idea to put Vanessa on because she is a very experienced gymnast and could serve as the captain of the team. I also think that desiree and elisa were injured until not long ago and the other power that is andrea andreoli, I think she is not yet a senior. That is why they made the decision to put Vanessa on the team, and Lara was 2nd in the floor excercise in the world cups behind Vanessa, as she took her place.
Kate Kramer Because Italy had the 1st and 2nd place finishers on the World Cup floor series. By choosing to move Vanessa to the main team. Italy still gets five spots because Lara finished second on FX.
