I guess having "greatestofalltimegreatestofalltimegreatestofalltime" constantly pounded into her head took too great of a toll on her. Maybe she thought she'd BETTER live up to that, because if everybody's been saying that, it must be true!

I think these Olympics are harder on the athletes. The planning for preparation is done years in advance then suddenly everything got pushed back a year, which would have messed things up. Even then they didn't know if they were going ahead. The gymnasts are young and they're not allowed out of their apartments outside of competition. No training, no sessions with coaches other than via Zoom, no visiting family. There's also the threat of COVID lingering.

But if she had all these problems, why did she go to Japan? Why make a move so impressive, but so hard, when with simpler moves she knew she was going to be on top. Russia without double, double triple moves beat us. Why was she on the team if she knew her mental status was not the best? She choke whether you see it or not. Up to this point no one had beaten her before and she choke. Better to say I have mental issues than they are better than me.

I'm worried too, but I think she's making the right move. She was SO much happier after she made the decision to pull out of team. Did you see her? That was a woman who was about to break, then made the hard call, and knew she'd made the right call and was so relieved and supportive of her team mates.
This has hit me particularly personally, since I've also had to quit some big things due to what I thought was mental health, but turned out to actually be an undiagnosed autoimmune disease. And oh my god, it is so hard to walk away from big things you care about because your body/mind just won't cooperate. And I was lucky, no one in my life gave me crap (though I also didn't have much active support from anyone), and I still felt so terrible and like such a loser. BUT, I knew in my bones that I had made the right choice, and I know that sense of whole-body relief that you're no longer trying to carry what you just can't handle anymore. And so I firmly believe that whatever is going on, this is, strangely, a good sign--a sign she's taking care of herself, a sign she'll find her way wherever she needs to go to get better.

While I agree it is part media's fault (I always found the american cockiness unhealthy), she is 24 and can decide how to approach an important event. And touring the TV shows it is not the way to go. Do it after the event if you feel like it, but do not watch TV, do not read newspapers, do not give interviews before competitions. One needs to focuse and not get pressured or intimidated or whatever.

Seriously I find some people's attitides a bit unreal. The truth is she choke under pressire. She is the oldest of everyone there. She knew gymnastics at her age was going to be like this. She is not the first older girl who lose to younger competitors. Champions retire champions, that is why she did it. She created the buzz of that big move on vault. They chose her for the team even though she made mistakes. All for all those big moves she made. You mean to tell me that the media and fans were not the same in Rio. The difference she was younger. She should've retired. Now to save face after all her mistakes and her lack of deliverance, use the PC phrase, I'm going to focus on my mental health. "Send her all your love", good grief!

I think the current environment with the pandemic has made it different. There is a lot less support for athletes and a lot less freedom and preparation allowed. Plus the year delay will have hurt an older gymnast like her who would have timed her comeback to fit in with the original date.

Consider the pressures Simone has been under: 1) Nassar abuse and sentencing. 2) Worldwide pandemic. 3) Postponement of the Olympics for one year. 4) Incessant media hype about being the GOAT and focus almost solely on her in the run-up to the games. 5.) Lack of audience at the competition - the quiet must be so disconcerting. 6.) Issues with scoring her incredible performances. 7.) Restructuring of the USAG and change at every level. 8.) Young team members looking to her for leadership. 9.) Absence of friends/family at the games. 10.) The level of her abilities and the pressure to perform those high-level vaults, etc. I mean it is MASSIVE. And she's only 24. Even with tons of international competitive experience, you can see why it would be too much.

It says a lot that when she was interviewed after the medal ceremony, she said she was happier acting as the coach and supporting the other girls than she was competing. @@AshleyKarys Team gold is the most coveted for federations (as it brings in the most money). Individual gold is the most coveted for the athletes as the AA is the official Olympic champion.

    • @MD-722
      @MD-722 3 года назад

@@AshleyKarys I agree with you, and I've always admired the culture of the genuine prioritisation of the team gold over individual golds amongst Russian athletes. But the athletes are not business people and do not think the same way that those who run the federation do--even if they were former athletes themselves.
When a country with a decentralised system wins team gold, it means all the individual gyms get money. But when a country with a centralised system wins team gold it means all of the money goes to one place; hence why I say the priorities vary greatly between athlete and federation. All sports rely on funding, sponsorship and investment to survive, so unless a sport is particularly popular on its own (e.g football) then one of the primary ways in which (international) sports secure the aforementioned is by the performance of national teams at major international competitions [continental and world championships, mid-season multisport championships (e.g. the Commonwealth/European/Pan American Games etc) and the Olympic Games]. Hence why team gold is *much* more important to national governing bodies than it is to athletes, even in countries like Russia where the athletes themselves are more focused on winning the team title.
But with regards to money in the case of athletes though, Simone Biles is a rare exception. She is one of the only gymnasts I can think of to have become a millionaire whilst competing (American or otherwise). Because USAG do not pay the majority of their athletes anything because accepting pay would require them to turn professional and subsequently sacrifice their opportunity to attend university on a sports scholarship. Furthemore even those that do get paid (i.e. the post graduate male gymnasts) do not get paid very much at all, relying on sponsorships and endorsements etc to survive. Hence why very few female gymnasts turn professional at all, the window to make money and the amount they can make is not worth them sacrificing a free education, even though women's gymnastics is more popular than MAG).
In contrast to this, Russia pays even if its junior athletes. Again, it might not be a lot of money, but they do not compete for free. Even it's pre-juniors receive a stipend--meaning they can save money throughout their careers.
But most of all you have to remember, the amount athletes get paid is in accordance with the popularity of their sport, so I frequently use football in the U.K as an example of this. A British footballer can play for a *VERY* mediocre team and still be on a 6-figure salary form the age of 18 due to football being the most popular sport in the world; even in Russia - russia.com/activity/football/. But artistic gymnastics has barely a fraction of the viewership, with figure skating and rhythmic gymnastics drawing in much wider audiences and the Russian team/athletes being far more dominant in both; esp RG, as Irina Viner-Usmanova is married to Alisher Usamanov (one of the richest men in Russia)--meaning the RG programme essentially has an endless stream of funding.
So in conclusion the degree to which certain titles are coveted vary greatly depending on who it is one is talking about. If it is an athlete, individual titles typically matter more as that is what boosts their profile in the sport (esp as gymnastics is an indiviual sport). But for federations the team title is more important as it brings in as many medals as there are individual finals (5--as the FIG is scrapping the 4-man team format after Tokyo) in spite of it being a single event.

I feel partly guilty just because we all (including myself) has put far to much pressure on simone! And now it's getting to her! I'm glad she is speaking out and saying that it's actually okay to not be okay and it's actually okay to proritize your mental well being over a medle!
On Instagram I've seen so many awful comments such as "she let down her team and her country" "she isn't a goat" and that's a load of bullshit!
She was doing what was best for the team, Simone said it herself that she has been having a little bit of the twisties! That's dangerous!

What i dont understand is whats different this time? She has always worked with psychologists and she was doing so well in competition almost up until tokyo, i know the pressure is high but i never expected her mental health would become this bad to a degree that she basically drops out.
This may sounds bad but i was dissapointed in her for quitting on her team, i love that she took care of her mental health but if she knew she was this bad since practice she shouldnt have competed, so an alternate stepped in, instead she did a bad vault then left the other 3 to compete on their own.
A watered down routine from her wouldve helped greatly even if she isnt at her best, you should never back off your own team, if she decided to compete whe shouldve not withdrawn

She likely feels “not good enough” anymore & she feels it training since she is old for gymnastics. She is still the best though to us. Let’s NOT put all the blame on the media and fans when she herself GLOATED about being the GOAT… Instead of remaining humble and focused like Jade Carey for example, Biles got cocky and even defended being cocky in at least one of her interviews… She literally is the one who got in her own head but the problem is she can’t get herself out and just focus on performing… I feel so sorry for the other gymnasts like MyKayla Skinner who worked so hard and did NOT get a chance because of favorites like Simone Biles!💔

If its a mental health issue due to the pressure then it has probably snowballed for her now. I would not be surprised if she retires completely from the 2020 Olympics now. I wouldnt even be surprised if she retires from the sport completely.
I get the feeling she was doing this entire Olympic run out of shear fortitude. She is probably completely turned off of competing. There were clues such as her wanting this to just be over. And that there should be some level of enjoyment to this. I dont either are true for her after that long delay from the pandemic. It did a mental thing on her. Lost her mojo so to speak.
Now to make things worse Im sure she feels she let everyone down. She has already said she doesnt feel she even deserves the silver team medal. Tragic situation for her for sure.
When youve been built up due to such success and youre confidence is so high that you buy into the idealization yourself (because one at that level would almost have to either get on the hype ride or have doubts its all true right?) and then perfection is threatened it then underminds the confidence and you start doubting yourself.
A mistake for Simone on the floor, vault or whatever the skill is under the microscope so intensely that it becomes a monster that gets into your head also.
So many factors. However, this is where the greatest champions live and have to overcome. This is when legends are made. And this is why there will always be a question mark in many peoples minds. Questions on her legacy that no one, even people that dislike her, could have placed if she had stepped up and dug deep. This will haunt her legacy sadly.

I really REALLY hope American media, mainly NBC, takes a step back to admit and analyze their role in this.
She's been their billion dollar making marketing campaign for far too long. So much so that they've dehumanized her in a way. They've talked about her like some sort of indestructible machine. Not a beautiful, smart, wonderful woman who happens to be good at gymnastics and is imperfect like everyone else.
This needs to not ever happen again.

@@AshleyKarys I agree with most of what you've said. Didn't Grishina have a breakdown in team finals, force an unprepared Mustafina to do a shaky beam routine, and also make a huge mistake on floor, causing Russia to come in 2nd? Grishina also did basically the same thing, yet she didn't receive this much hate from the media (God knows what happened inside her gym, those coaches and her family members were brutal) but at least she was spared by the media. It's not like Russians don't quit (cough cough Khorkina), but what Simone did shouldn't be called quitting.

    • @fortheloveofcats2462

@@AshleyKarys I'm not even from USA, and Grishina's parents apparently stole her Olympic prize money because she made mistakes in the finals, but that's not the issue at the moment. You're saying that Russians never quit and are blaming the US coaches as if Russian coaches never do any of that. Russian coaches are just as abusive, they've literally starved and stunted many young girls with great potential. I love the Russian gymnasts, all of them are amazingly talented and hardworking. But the insane pressure causes any top athlete to falter, and even Russian gymnasts have had breakdowns in the past and nearly cost their country a medal (Anastasia Grishina in 2012, Khorkina in 2000, Gelya was having a breakdown in 2016, but thankfully Aliya helped her pull herself together, etc). The point is Simone had a breakdown like so many others , she is possibly injured and in a lot of pain. Had she continued, she'd have gotten herself even more injured, or even lost the medal altogether. So don't say that Simone is a quitter because she couldn't handle the pressure or let her team down.

So NOW, as more and more is coming out about this most stunning event (Simone's withdrawal from competing) a feeling I had since CLASSICS I am now learning was not wrong AT ALL. Simone recently stated in one of her social media postings that she suffered a TORN LIGAMENT at World's 2019 which NONE of her fans knew until now and she stated as well that 2-3 weeks ago (Trials I am sure) she RE-INJURED herself again something that NONE OF US knew until now either. I have been INSISTING since Classics that something is not PHYSICALLY right with Simone because I had never seen her ankles being taped before and definitely not so heavily. Despite what was said to the press, I was not convinced.
Night two of Trials suggested to me that all was not well with her MENTALLY as well and I think that was CLEAR to everyone. Come all the way to Olympics quals and I became 100% convinced that Simone was not all there PHYSICALLY and NOW I know it to be TRUE. It appears now that the MENTAL stress of having to perform always at her best with an injury that does not allow her to perform the most DIFFICULT routines with confidence put a Kibosh on what could have been the single most OUTSTANDING athletic performance of the WHOLE Olympics.
She is not alone in this regard though, Dina Asher Smith Britain's main hope in the 100 and 200m ADMITTED today to carrying a serious injury a while now which NO ONE but her team knew about. She was able like Simone to compete in events prior and still win but that was because she was having ONE race to compete on a given day but here at the Olympics she has to run ROUNDS and now that injury has caught up to her. She could not qualify for the 100m finals and now has to withdraw from the 200m event which she stood an EXCELLENT chance of medaling.
The time has come for athletes to STOP HIDING their PHYSICAL and MENTAL struggles. It would allow them to be more selective in what competitions they take part in. It will probably cost them a title here or there but in Simone and Dina's case would have ensured that they are FIT to compete on the BIGGEST STAGE.
