  • Valentina Rodionenko had her opinions about the WAG team competition. She thinks the USA team is easily beatable without Simone and the USA MAG team is essentially nothing to discuss.

there is no ignoring that Simone is a huge advantage to the American team, but saying the American team is nothing without Simone is just an insult to all the other gymnasts who have so much talent. Suni, Morgan, Grace, Riley, Mykayla, Jordan, and so so many more. Sure without Simone the Olympics becomes less guaranteed for Team USA but even without Simone, Team USA would produce amazing results (assuming everyone hits their routines).

I agree the Americans are spectacular, but when it comes to difficulty, we’d medal but not guaranteed a gold one. I’ve been watching every video out there and other countries have difficulty too, sometimes more than us. I’m not undermining the USA, but there are many other Countries that are spectacular out there. Basically, the most consistent team with the most difficulty is the winner. It will be very very close without Biles. Too close for comfort. I really hope I’m not stirring the pot, but I am only saying what I’ve observed.

@@jasminenystrom9074 There is NO other team out there that has greater difficulty than the US with or without Biles. You just slip in Jade for Simone and difficulty in VAULT and FLOOR will almost be the same. Sunisa has a high difficulty bar routine and Riley McCusker is very good too. Beam is the only apparatus I can see another team out scoring the US on but their advantage on Floor and Vault will still give them the gold. This is WITHOUT Simone in the mix.

I even go through 2 or 3 different options of who would realistically be the replacement gymnast, and through various possible new team final lineups depending on that person, and it is a very easy win. In fact when you think about it as amazing as Simone is if you replaced her with Skinner (and I am not even sure Skinner is who replaces her, that is just the lazy option) what does the U.S lose? 4 points, maybe 5 points max, which is a ton, but they are winning by a lot more that.

Gabz7 of course Simone is not going to stay in the sport forever but that was NOT the point Valentina was making either. One of the points she made though is what RUSSIA should really be concern about and that is how much fewer young girls are getting into artistic gymnastics now than years ago. THIS is where the US has everybody beaten. Artistic gymnastics has become so huge a sport for young girls in America and has kept its attraction for years now and there seems to be no letting up. I must add that I strongly believe Simone's success has contributed a good deal to this as more African Americans are being drawn to the sport like never before. Against that backdrop I don't see the Russian, Chinese or any other team overtaking the US with or without Simone in the foreseeable future. They don't have the huge interest in the sport as America has(female) they don't have the money to go around and they just don't have as many quality gyms all over there country as the US does.

If she had continued and injured herself or paralyzed herself after knowing she wasn't mentally in the head space to compete what would be saying then? "Oh she should have stopped" It's easy for us who don't do high level gymnastics to say she quit but she is literally doing the hardest gymnastics of anyone in the field and is the face not only of US gymnastics but the entire Olympic Games if she isn't in a good place mentally she has to to stop. Her event isn't like track and field or swimming where you run and just run a bad race in you're not all there she could literally kill herself so we have to be mindful when we say she quit on the team. Of course take into consideration the Russians are also quite shaky and it evens out. Do I think that team can be beaten "easily"? No, but would it be much easier and definitely plausible? Absolutely. I think one of the main reasons the American team has always been able to stay so calm in team finals is mostly due to the fact they know they are going to win. I agree that Simon Biles is the best, but it was obvious that the commentary of the Russian coach was on point. Maybe it's because ppl in the US generally don't care about other countries in sports(or otherwise) unless they lose in an actual competition like Gymnastics or Basketball, but please understand that Russia has a lot of traditions in both sports gymnastics and especially artistic gymnastics. I think overall the comments of Rodionenko were coming from a place of competitive drive and motivation more than disrespect to the US and don't forget, she was giving this interview to the media in Russia. I believe some ppl are misconstructing these types of comments because they see international sports competition as basically an implied "d*** measuring contest" between countries in the same way they see national competitions as a measuring contest between, cities, states, and regions. Anyway, does anyone know if Simone Biles will participate in the individual competition?

I do agree that it would be quite possible to beat the US if Simone wasn't on the team. If you take the Worlds team members Suni, Grace and Kara, you're sure to count falls. Add Morgan or Riley to that group, and you have one very risky team. I agree that it would completely come down to consistency. As it is, I feel Tom Forster should appoint consistent gymnasts to the team surrounding Simone, rather than flashy score potential because it would put too much pressure on her to deliver if everyone is falling around her at the Olympics.

Well, here we are now. I think many people just underestimated the talent and consistency of Russia this quad and they certainly have gotten better as the olympics got closer. Gaby smashed Victoria Komova in London 2012, and Sunisa could even beat Simone on uneven bars. Morgan and Laurie deliver amazing under pressure, and Jordan Chiles, as freshman, could be the new great surprise altogether. I think this will only fuel the fire. A bit disrespectful towards 1000's of USA topgymnasts. Even the Bruin Banters are topnotch class. Victory is made with love passion and respect. The Russian or Karolyi approach days are gone.
