I think this should be a wake up call for USA, I feel like we got hammered on artistry, floor and beam. Flexed feet and lack of extension through leaps really really added up in quals and here. The Russians were insanely polished, their dance is perfect, their execution, even with some lower start values, was on fire. We could use some of that.

That’s the thing with US. They go by popularity of the athlete and leave the rest behind.
Congrates to Russia and their well deserved Gold. Us needs to recognize all athletes and not just one. As we saw in these Olympics.
      Pressure? Every athlete has them.

I saw someone comment on instagram, “the judges want to see ARTISTIC gymnastics, not Athletic gymnastics”… the US has lacked in the artistry department for the last 2 quads and these judges in tokyo are not being shy with their deductions for artistry. Take Jade’s FX for example… 4 of the most difficult tumbling passes in the world, yet look at her dance n choice of music. Absolutely flat, no emption or passion in the dance… the music even puts me to sleep. I hope the best for team USA, but they should not be shocked that they are not receiving the scores that they do domestically.

Something has gone wrong for awhile now, Simone spread herself too thin, TV, advise, ads, photo shoots, when the devil was she going to be training??? and resting??? Building her relationship with her man??? Gabby did the same thing in 2016, tv, flying between gym and LA to film, has to be a big NO NO for all gymnasts and the amount of time they need to reach Olympic level performances and to allow their bodies to recuperate, as well as their minds and souls. The Landi's should know better and said NO tv, limited social media (Bela did this with Mary Lou prior to 1984 games) but they are not used to this- in France there isn't all the hype around the Olympics and the Gold medalists don't have the opportunities that they do in the US. Well if she opt's to drop out for the rest, her replacement is Jade in the All-Around and if she's drops out then Mykayla has the chance...if she drops out of Event Finals, Mykayla replaces her on vault, and if not it goes to a reserve athlete...Bars goes to Melanie de jesus dos Santos for France, Beam to Urara Ashikawa of Japan and Floor to Jennifer Gadirova from the UK!!!

I believe USA gymnastics is being allowed to be a propaganda instrument for nbc. NBC has exclusive coverage of Olympics thru 2032; so nothing major is going to change for US tv viewers. Too much media pressure is placed on these girls. They are the best in the world; but gymnastics followers want to see other teams compete and experience a full international competition. I’m sick of all things Simone or all things for whoever is the media darling of the quad.

So literally it wasn’t about one person. This year USA quals as 2nd suddenly goes to simone not doing this or that. But teammates of the past are injured, moved to ncaa, or retired and this team was not exceptional enough for her to coast to gold with errors. Suddenly a well balanced russian team made it necessary for her to COMPETE for the first time in years. I'm from a small non-western country and has been a great fan of Russian gymnastics for years. Even though I was rooting for Russia, I never expected them to actually win the Team final.
Please don't hate me for saying this, but honestly I've been so sick of the "We Americans are the best" "The USA has the strongest athletes and will win with our C team" and "You can only wish for silver with Simone present" narrative from the media, coaches and commentators. Not only did it foster arrogance, it put US athletes with great pressure and expectations, as if winning gold is expected of them and silver is a 'lost'. All the attention and pressure finally push Simone over the edge, and I sincerely hope she will take the time to take good care of her mental health.
I really hope this experience will humble the American media and learn that their athletes are human too. Athletes owe the public nothing, even if they didn't deliver as well as they could have, even if they 'only' won a silver or bronze or nothing at all, their fellow countrymen should be proud of them for representing their countries as elite athelets.

As an American, I'm not even mad, I'm very, very happy for Russia. I'm sad about what Simone is going through, but Tom really annoyed me with his "I'm not worried about a few tenths" comments, not to mention Tim & Nastia's "USA could send 15 teams and all contend for gold" comments. That being said, silver is AMAZING and they put up a great fight for it. It makes me happy that they're genuinely happy with the silver. The '08 team always looked devastated when they got silver (which I guess is understandable, but IIRC they didn't really have a chance) and idk it's nice that they're so happy and proud of themselves and each other.

Russia was beautiful. They didn't just show excellence, but a lot of heart. Melnikova is a star. Her floor routine was anything but routine. Her face as she ended, it has me smiling right now. The first thing she did after celebrating with her team was ask Simone what was up and if she was okay. Class.
Now USAG. I am not on the inside, but I talk to enough people who have insight to know that Tom is a very emotional person. I'm a feeler. I love emotions. However, Tom is exactly the same guy who was throwing tantrums on the sidelines while his ill-prepared gymnasts struggled 1996.
I don't think he is necessarily a bad person, but I think he is too reactive to be making decisions that involve making or killing people's lives. Hell, his decisions can make or cost millions of dollars for people and companies/organizations.
Furthermore, I find him to be narcissistic and vindictive. For various reasons....
I also know there's something wrong because of how wrong, in general, the gym fandom was. I was _really_ wrong. I thought we were unbeatable. Hell, I thought the B team would win gold. I thought leaving Becky was stupid because GBR had no chance at a medal in any situation and Becky was the only one who could win anything.

I’m going to say this as nicely as I can, Sunisa was the only gymnast that carried the team and delivered. The judges really hammered Grace and Jordan on beam for there form on the acro-series & leaps which were not 180°. Floor, Grace going out of bounds twice & Jordan going OOB & Falling was really the death of the gold hope. Suni really shined with a 15.4 on bars & 14.1 on beam and probably the best floor routine of the year for her. Unfortunately the rest of the team couldn’t help. Even tho Russia fell twice on on beam there form and execution & difficulty was way better. I just hope Suni can get a gold on bars so she can officially be an Olympic champion! And no disrespect to Simone because I really do feel bad for her and hope she gets better for finals but for her to say “y’all will be fine , I’ve been to an Olympics before” well kinda easy for her to say since she has an Olympic gold medal & now the rest of the team won’t!

First, congrats on your comments in this video, very respectful and fair. I don't think we can compare this 2021 team to the previous ones, just because the training system has changed dramatically. The Karolyis brought with them this sovietic way of doing, which was absolutely damaging for human beings, but efficient. Team USA always won just like USSR and Romanian teams always won at that time, because no one cared about those girls, no one. They were mistreated and abused, and held under control by fear. That's what we call winning at all costs, and it worked back then, just like it worked for team USA when coached by the Karolyis. Thanks god, this period is over. We can hope for non psychologically damaged athletes, but also expect very "human" athletes, who experience failures sometimes. And that's what happened today. I think the girl suddenly realized (Simone included) that they were not unbeatable, that they could be fragile too, and nervous, and it surely is a shock for those girls who were so sure they would win kind of easily. It's a shock for the public too because we were so used to it, we just took this victory for granted. And yes, Tom should be prepared to get himself an other job, but... The change was good though, we need to bring humanity back in this gym house! And human sometimes wins, and sometimes loses, that's just the way it is. And to be honest, I'm glad that suspens and drama are back into gymnastics competitions, it's kind of boring to watch it knowing already who's gonna win this. Anyway, full respect for all those girls out there, gymnastics is so beautiful, but soooooo hard and demanding too, so congrats to all of them. @@kareharpies Finally, someone said it. She began the whole GOAT thing herself. Of course it began as a light-hearted "joke" as she put it and I'm glad that she was able to shut her haters down rightfully so, but I would've hoped her PR team would've told her how it her self-declaring she's the GOAT would be sopped up by the media and be branded on her for life/at least the Olympics. She thought that she would be able to handle her GOAT declaration and carrying it out and tbh she has done so well and lived up to expectations, except for now when it counts (at least to her and her team) the most. I think that she is a humble person though, except for that brief reckless moment in which she decided to stick it her haters by GOATing herself; I feel like she likely even regretted it soon after, but it was already done.

Regarding "why". The team in London and especially in Rio were crazy strong. Simone, Ali - both super capable on the floor, good on beam. Laurie - great on beam, decent on the floor, Madison excellent on bars, Gabby - great all-arounder competing as team-member and experienced Olympian. Sorry, but Grace and Jordan don't come close. Now about US team, this was overconfidence fueled by the toxic media they have, Tim and Nastia saying that US could fill 3 teams and still get the gold, not true at all. Then this whole pressure on Simone "The GOAT", they forgot she was human, they dehumanised Simone. Then arrogance plays its part too, this culture of "we are the best", finally honestly its lack of discipline, they spent some time without a coordinator and Tom is too soft, he wants to change the abuse culture but discipline, dieting(eating right, but not overeating and not starving too) , control, methodism is crucial.

But let’s just say that this final really proved how Tom Forster doesn’t know shit on what he’s doing. MyKayla Skinner is a more older gymnast who has more experience, she would manage this team final really well. Jade Carey could throw some huge scores in two big events. It’s not about Grace and (Jordan I guess), they were wonderful and handled the pressure really well.. it’s just that this is the Olympics not some US competition, and every score counts. That’s one of only things I can compliment about Martha, she knew how to make an Olympian team.
Ps: also I loved how, this final showed US how their not the center of the world, even on gymnastics, that there’s plenty of gymnasts like them that are working hard and are as also good all around the globe.

It’s the classic saying “Pride comes before a fall” the amount of crap we’ve seen spilling out of the US leading up to the games was ridiculous. They’re always over scored in the domestic meets so when they compete internationally and do the same routines scoring almost half a point lower it demoralises them. Also the constant “Simone vs herself” “no one can beat Simone” “she could do what she did in Rio and still win by 3 points” (courtesy of Timmy) has totally put so much pressure on Simone and sadly she just felt it too hard today and couldn’t continue. We all scoffed at V-Rod saying that russia could win without Simone, well they did. Whilst counting 2 falls.
However saying all that, a silver is still a fantastic recovery for the girls and certainly proves that USA doesn’t need to rely on Simone all the time, brought the other talented gymnasts to the front. I am hoping Simone is ok and can manage to shake off some of the pressure, she should think back to what her mum said to her before Rio “I want you to go out there and be the best Simone you can be and whatever the outcome is we’ll take it”

I think a huge problem for the US team is the over-inflated and inaccurate scoring at domestic events. People are actually complaining about Grace/Jordan/Simone getting too low scores? Just compare their execution to the ROC and the lower scores are deserved. Execution scores at US domestic meets are simply too high, and USAG is just setting up their gymnasts to fail since they can't fix problems before hitting the international stage and being hammered on them. Also think team selection/placement at trials would've been different had execution been accurately scored. The inflated E scores across the board really hurt US gymnasts with actually good form like Leanne.

    • @Appaddict01
      @Appaddict01 3 года назад

IMO...Only Grace and Jordan were over scored nationally. Simone just had a bad day and was still number one. Simone lost almost a point on her beam dismount and had a huge OOB on FX. Riley and Leanne had superior execution to Jordan. Grace just has not been consistent since 2018. She never seemed to hit her best routines. It’s why I felt she shouldn’t have been on the team. It’s kind of crazy MYK had better execution scores then Jordan on floor.😂

That's exactly what happened with Simone I think... She is one of the most capable athletes of all time, but the team was relying too much on her and she was not ready for that, combined with the difficult covid situation.... This is a result of Tom's poor strategy while selecting the team, lack of international experience for the athletes and training and covid...Plus all of them had recent injuries...I think Tom doesn't have to be fired but he has to change his strategy an altitude dramatically, he's good just not at selecting teams and preparing the girls for the pressure that's to come... Simone ALWAYS had EVERYONE cheering for her, and she STILL couldnt perform. Gabby had to perform WHILST EVERYONEwas hating on her. For no bloody reason. This will teach you all. And I mean… all the pressure the world has put on Simone. I understand that it was too much pressure. She’s only a human, and a kind one who does what she thinks is the right for her fellow teammates. But she is still a part of the team, and of course she is allowed to celebrate her silver medal with her team.

@@simonheinsen5418 yep it's as if they were expecting Simone to win it all by herself. I don't want to imagine the pressure they put on her. She has already proven so much in this sport and her team mates did really well to keep up. I hope for Simone that she is able to still compete and finish on a positive note for herself.

Can anyone tell Tim (and Nastia) that nothing is guaranteed in gymnastics, no matter whether it is Simone or anyone else? Because they keep making the same stupid comments at the olympics, and it's so unfair to gymnasts.
Remember 2012, about Jordyn Wieber: "Whoever wins the American Cup in the olympic year wins the olympic games" - really? Also in 2012, re. McKayla Maroney: "she will be olympic gold medalist on vault, no doubt about it" - oh, wait. And now, Simone and team USA, with the "guaranteed gold medal".

It was clear after the qualifications that Russia was on the rise and if they hadn't won today they would certainly have been a stronger competitor in the future. They have upped the technical difficulty and combined with their polished moves they are very dangerous. The US is definitely stagnating and needs a fresh vision. There will be no more 5+ point victories where they can simply out power and muscle everyone and still win with mistakes or subpar execution.

I wonder how Aimee Boorman would have handled this. I don't think she would have let Simone quit. There are no more adults in the room. There's also no more team USA, if your top athlete and team leader can give up. The rebuilding process has to start with some discipline and making everyone accountable to the team.

Well what’s the alternative ? She continues to compete in that poor state of mind and suffers an injury ? What they do is insanely dangerous if you’re second guessing yourself and your ability. Which Simone clearly has been doing since day 2 of trials. She recognized she was going to put the team at risk of no possibly not medalling and worse yet injuring herself. She comes first.

This was such a great final. For those of us who love the sport it does not matter who wins. We want the best to win! I will say this though... If Simone really is not in the headspace to compete as she likes, she should graciously give up the rest of the competition so reserves can compete. If she does not, it will look like she was only out for herself. She has nothing to prove. She is already the best, and those of us who love her would not be mad. It's OK to admit when you have reached you mental capacity for stress.
