Are Snakes Born Angry of Do Humans Make Them That Way?
Have you ever wondered if snakes are naturally calm or angry? We hear of snakes "chasing people down" but do they really? We talk about some natural aspects of our snakes and how we can better keep them, have better relationships with them and enhance the lives of them and us as keepers. Our lavender female mainland reticulated python, male sri lankan python and female burmese python help us discuss how to best make friends with them.

    Snakes are snakes. And they will be just fine of you don't annoy them. Treat them right, make sure they live in the right environment, and they will be hanging around just fine. Just as with every animal. And individual animals will be calmer or more anxious, will be more defensive or more friendly.

    Looks so cool! I have a ball python and I want to upgrade his tank and I’ve been thinking about repurposing a China hutch but I’m not sure how I could seal the wood so it doesn’t grow mold with the humidity. Did you use something to seal off the wood here?

      @IntrepidExotics 14 часов назад

      I didn;t use any extra sealant on this one yet. She will grow out of this enclosure before it deteriorates so when that happens I'll look at the condition and treat it as need be.

    Tim, my comment is this, everyone told me to stay away from blood pythons because the stigma is “they’re nasty and defensive and not good pets”, but I tell ya what, I got her 2-3 weeks ago now and she’s been nothing but a dream, she’s only 10 months old and has yet to take a shot at me or hiss at me, none of my snakes have besides my little puney cali king snake, I was expecting my BCC or Burm to take a shot at me but never 😂

    I have a Burmese Python who by nature is a flailing, biting - the bight where he is so enraged he will not let go. I can unwrap him and have resorted to a bit of Vodka to encourage him to let me go. He has perfect conditions, he is well fed, and has had patience, slow movement, respect and kindness from me. I was told by his breeder he was never going to be handleable. I can hold him, bring him outside, have a good session with him, but then he goes into his I am going to kill you mode when I put him down. He is a handsome Albino, putting on size at almost 3 years old. Worry that his next owner will be unkind to him. I am 74, tiny, slim and still strong. How can this snake have a good life, while not killing me?

      That's a tough call, my knee jerk reaction us that if it were me I would find someone that wanted to trade-up a more mellow animal. I know for me I enjoy working with tougher animals so there may be other folks that are good with an arrangement like that. Have to think of your own safety first.

      @@IntrepidExotics Do you know anyone who would be willing to work with my snake. I am willing to pay them. I have worked with snakes, feral cats, defensive biting ferrets and minks. This is my first failure and all I want is for Sunshine is a contented life without fear. Perhaps another idea is to leave him alone and carry him from one enclosure to a clean one when needed, but I believe in snake enrichment instead of being contained all of the time.

    When you said she went to your chest for warmth..😢 that got to me. You know, I look back over the friends I've had over the years and the people I've met or didn't know but we were there for an event or party. ..I remember many of those places I visited had snakes. If I knew then, what I know now...I think I would have had to say or do something about how they were neglecting and mistreated those poor animals. I saw snakes in shoe boxes and fish bowls. I saw them in wire cages with nothing covering those metal bars. I've seen snakes with no hides, no heat lamps. I've seen snakes kept at eye level with big dogs staring at them and one was drooling... can you imagine how terrified that poor snake was? I'm sorry I didn't know then what I know now. Tim you are without question one of the kindest most intelligent and interesting man I've met here in RUclips'sville. Your knowledge of your animals is more than impressive! It's always a pleasure watching your vlogs. I'm certain you have helped HUNDREDS of people who didn't know how to house and keep their snakes and all of their other pets. You give so freely from your heart and in today's world, that is rare and appreciated. I don't have any reptiles so I watch people that do. Thank you for all you do to improve and enhance the world you live in. Your audience had TRIPPLED since the first vlog I met you on, that horrible massacre that happened awhile ago. The pain and heartbreak you felt transmitted, I bet was felt throughout the world of snake lovers and Guardians. You helped people to know what to do... and that's when I first watched you and I've watched EVERY VIDEO you've made since.You're awesome!❤ p.s. Bob looks great.. I'm not sure if you used my suggestion to name him Bob or someone elses... I'm going to think you picked mine...(but i know you didnt coz i just said Bob and Not "silent Bob ")😅😊

    Tegu's rear teeth are more for cracking hard food nuts, snails shells, hard insects, egg shells... They don't need to grind or chew up flowers/vegetation like a hoofed animal. Tegus dont eat much of any leaves or grass. In nature, the people who study their stomach contents show they eat over time, young to old, they eat insects all through life, nuts and berries, flowers, rodents, frogs, crawfish, small snakes, maybe a bird and bird/reptile eggs. They also take advantage of dead animals.

    I wanted your advice, I've had this new corn for 7 months now, 2.5 years old, never handled previously before his time with me, he doesn't settle outside the tank, can be alright one minute, but freak out briefly the next. He's started popping his cloaca lately, but I don't think he's musked yet, at least not on me. He has some days worse than others, sometimes defensive and terrible with hands coming near him, other times just not that bad and we have a good session. Never had this with any other snake, they're all docile and relaxed. Not sure if he's just never going to be 'a pet'? I don't hesitate with him, not scared of being bitten or stiff when handling, but I'm not bonding with him, just wondering if some snakes are just rack material more than pet material. I'm considering handing him off to a breeder after he's been bred just to give him freedom from being handled, he just doesn't seem to like it at all.

    • @IntrepidExotics
      @IntrepidExotics 2 дня назад

      Ahh, I have this discussion with friends sometimes. snakes will often have different personalities depending on the individual, then different species and families may have different traits among themselves too. I've found that colubrids, although they can be really calm and easy to handle, can often be really flighty more often than not. My opinion is that they don't have the same capacity for thought that a python does, for instance. Now I have friends that strongly disagree and they may be right, but put simply I think pythons-boas, larger snakes in general have more capacity to think through things than smaller colubrids which makes them a bit easier to bring around to a calm state whereas many smaller ones simply dont process the good experiences and develop trust the same way. It may be that you're doing everything right and he may just be resistant to trusting you. If it were me I wouldn't give up on it with the understanding that it could be a long road and that ya may never get him truly comfortable. I'm doing the same thing with a young milk snake right now, I'm seeing that there's some thought process going on with him but not nearly as much as there was when I was taming down my sri lankan python, for instance.

    • @thesnowroach
      @thesnowroach 2 дня назад

      @@IntrepidExotics Thanks for your thoughts, yeah I'd considered as much in terms of differences in personality, and I do think you're right as regards him not letting go and trusting, but in terms of letting him wander I can't trust him either. He's not due to be bred until next year, if at all, so we've got plenty of time to see if he comes around. I'll do what's best for him in this situation, if that means letting him go to someone who'll offer him the environment he wants, that's what will happen. 👍

    i have a brand new carpet that wont eat. i noticed early in the video you mentioned your burm didnt eat for two months and you ended up force feeding. at what point did you determine it was time to force feed?

    • @IntrepidExotics
      @IntrepidExotics 3 дня назад

      It's not an exact science for sure, but I spent a lot of time trying every method I could and when it became clear she just didn't get the concept of eating after a couple-few weeks I just started the cycle of force feeding one week, offering the next, force feeding the following week, offering the next until she figured it out. I gave her enough time between force feedings to ensure she would be hungry and eventually she started on her own and has done great ever since. When it's clear they just aren't getting it as babies I don't wait until they show physical signs to start getting meals in em because that's the time they need to be sucking down food to develop.
