  • We took in a new tegu on short order which gives us an unexpected opportunity to discuss how to manage and gain the trust of a new animal that's a bit agro towards people. We will be expanding his enclosure soon as he will need more space than what we have, but for the time being we still want to record every interaction to show how some patience can bring around an animal that may otherwise be a little risky to handle.

That was excellent. When I was working with my young tegu I bought a pop-up mosquito tent that had a floor. I would sit there and read a book out loud and sometimes fed her with tongs. It was great!

Thank you for doing a tegu handling series. I have a subadult and we’re still trying to bond.

Cool! If I can offer some unsolicited advice. Raw, unfertilized chicken eggs contain an enzyme or compound in their albumen that significantly blocks calcium absorption. So if you’re feeding raw eggs 2x/week, no UV light, he will develop muscular and skeletal maladies.
Cooking the eggs neutralizes that enzyme and it is dramatically reduced in fertilized eggs.

Cool, ill look into that, he's got UV and doesn't get many eggs but I'll definitely find the studies on that.

@@IntrepidExotics yeah I’ve been trying to track down where I read it. I know you know what you’re doing with these guys but I wanted to share it if I found it. I do believe the specific study was in varanids specifically but it was thought to apply to all reptiles and other vertebrates. I believe it’s avidin that blocks the calcium absorption. Can’t find the specific study that I was referencing though.

I wouldn't say they're puppy trained, I've had my Argentine black and white for 4 years I Raised her since she was a baby. She has been an excellent pet, But she Caught me by surprise last week and snapped at my hand hard If she would have got me.I would have many stitches in my hand right now.... She lost some of my trust. A tegu is a force to contend with, strong in body and in will. Best pet I ever had, but They can be tough when they want to.
