- With the pending Argentine black and white tegu ban in North Carolina we wanted to put out a care guide to ensure newer keepers are familiar with their requirements before adopting, Adopting a tegu simply to beat the ban before knowing how to care for them can cause problems for the animals well-being as well as the keeper.

Yea the money I’ve spent on my tegu is substantial for only being 8 months old I built him an 8x4 and that alone cost 400$ and ordering all his mice and ground turkey is at least 50$ a month and getting a uvb strip for an 8x4 cage is 150$ every 6 months it’s crazy but worth it because they are probably the best pet reptile out there but I often see tegus mistreated by people who don’t know what there doing and don’t do the research
I got to meet a big female last year at a reptile expo and she would not stop licking my neck. Having recently lost my beloved savannah monitor to that bitter 85% mortality rate, my heart is pretty much set on making a black-and-white tegu my next big lizard. I love how sweet they can be.
Helpful tip I'd the tegu wants to go down for brumation it's good to keep them up for a week or 2 weeks to be safe to ensure they've passed whatever they've eaten prior to deciding to go down. Heard stories of people losing their tegus because they didn't keep them up.

Very useful information there! thank you very much i have subscribed, il be getting myself a black and white tegu in the next few months (im in the UK) after owning multiple reptiles including Green iguanas i have a fair bit of knowledge in the reptile area, il be building an enclosure myself size- 8x4x4 for the second time although with technology more advanced than previous years and learning for build mistakes from my previous enclosure build this next enclosure should be fairly decent but il be making sure the enclosure is built and that i have every think i need before my search for a black and white tegu begins!

I love Tegus. That was the first reptile I fell in love with watching Clint's Reptiles. He has Gus Gus and he's a doll. I love the opening shots you open your videos. You have Niles in a harness walking him around. Your big snakes in the trees and just hanging out in the grass.. you're the only snake owner I know that takes his snakes and lizards out for "walks"! You're such a cool dude!😎...(pppssst.. you look like you've lost a bit of weight... good job!)

I have a purple tegu I bought as a hatchling who has always been super tame. I haven't had to deal with her being aggressive and I know I got lucky but I can say I play with her all the time.
Last month I bought 2 more tegus at a show both hatchling and I'm going to make sure to take them out often and hope they stay tame.

Brumation is emotionally trying, lol. A week after I got my first tegu she passed out for 3 months, lol

@@IntrepidExotics Only thing I would add is the insane growth factor. From a greenie to 3ft in 1.5 years is incomprehensible. I'd tape measure her, go to work, and 12 hours later return home... I shit you not... almost an inch in a single day is not unusual! I did a "duplex" enclosure. The "basement" was a tunnel leading to an 8" high floor with 5" substrate and sliding door so I could check on her without waking during brumation. She slept down there every night year round and took the heat management stress out of the equation. I also attempted a "flushable" pond. It kinda worked and I'm convinced it's viable. They will gladly poop in water. Every other day baths help in non humid climates/seasons.
@@shadowflash8519 Good point, when they come out of brumation they are feeding machines and sprout right up there, my girl is being upgraded to my nile monitor's current enclosure just as soon as I get him upgraded this sumer
@@IntrepidExotics that was my only point... you capture the "feel" of a tegu better than just about everyone. And my god it's scary how fast they grow. No matter how prepared you are it still always feels like you're playin catch up. I'm also getting to understand my Lizzie may have been unusually large. Mine came from the legendry Agama International...through Hoffer's in Milwaukee WI... both now lost to the sands of time. At 7 years old she was 4'10" and near 18lbs and NOT fat... shrank a bit in her golden years to around 3-1/2' I'll miss her always.

I have always wanted one, and finally got one, she needed work, but is coming around. She came from an aquarium, to an 8x4 enclosure. She is on another feeding schedule than what she is used to is different as well. She was fed many fish fillets, and is now on a balanced diet tegu specific. She is just coming out of brumation now, so we will see what this year comes into being.
They are awesome, mine is getting a big enclosure upgrade this summer as she's growing like a weed!
Do they grow fast? Do they all have to go through brumation?
@@heatherbrunner2165 Yes they grow fast, and do go through a puberty stage called guberty. You just have to have patients, and work with them. From what I have seen dealing with a baby to adult, they are like the retic of lizards. Very smart, and if treated right a very great animal to have, or they have you.

The only reptile in my opinion that can compete and possibly beat with a fully tame tegu, is Cyclura!

Would one of those big metal livestock water tanks work for a Tegu? My dad has photos of his old pet Tegu in a 700 gallon stock tank, and I’m considering transforming one into an enclosure with a wood and fence wire lid

Is everybody going to really follow that law if banned? I mean come on, people are going to be people. Not every person is going to follow such a cruel law. Law enforcement can only do so much. They can't have eyes on everyone... life will always find away.

Dumb question here. I just adopted one of these babies yesterday and I’m SOOOOO excited. Is it the same as snakes, give them a week to acclimate before starting to handle them? My girl is about 5 to 6 months old right now.
Not a dumb question at all :-) I would see if she would tong feed for ya, if she does than ya can start baby steps right away. If she seems really scared and doesn't want to tong feed, I would start by drop-bowl feeding and just spending some time sitting near her where she can see ya but not forcing handling, slowly work her up to tong feeding and take it from there. There's no hard rule as it really depends on her disposition. Some are great from day one, some take more time
@@IntrepidExotics Oh awesome! So far she has taken a Dubia from the tongs and some ground turkey. I’ve been doing school homework and she’s been checking me out. However if I stick my hand in there and just let it be still in the substrate she’ll slowly walk away and go in her hide without arching her back. I haven’t tried to hold her.
Sounds like a little patience and coaxing her further and further out with food will have her ruling the roost in no time :-)

What’s the ban about? I think they are cute!
Theres concerns of them becoming invasive because they feed on ground-nesting animals. There's only a small portion of the state that they can supposedly survive the winters but they still passed the ban on the Argentine BW tegus

I heard the females can be more territorial than the males, could you expound further on this topic?
I think it's hard to say with captive animals because there's so many variables outside of their natural state. One female may naturally be more territorial than a male, but the female may have a more experienced keeper that relaxes the animal more oppose to a male in less skilled hands, so in that case the male would seem more territorial or vice-versa. I also think sometime people will arbitrarily tag an animal as "territorial" when the animal may simply be feeling cornered and threatened in a confined space with a giant person coming to get them. Personally, anytime I get a negative response from any animal my default thought is "what am I doing to cause this animal to behave this way" as opposed to "this animal is just aggressive"

I have owned rabbits in the past, they like to chew and leave marks everywhere, do tegus have a similar habit, or any other sort of destructive habits? I suppose what I'm asking is do they have a habit of chewing things they shouldn't, or clawing up furniture?
@@HammboneBob I don't let mine roam, but tegus will definitely dig and the times I have her out supervised it's not long before she starts looking for a place to den-up and chill. She isn't a chewer though, not even remotely close to rabbits and I would say I've never seen my tegu chew on anything
