⬜ Tegu Day 3: Showing Some Very Uneasy Behaviors

  • We took in a new tegu on short order which gives us an unexpected opportunity to discuss how to manage and gain the trust of a new animal that's a bit agro towards people. We will be expanding his enclosure soon as he will need more space than what we have, but for the time being we still want to record every interaction to show how some patience can bring around an animal that may otherwise be a little risky to handle.

    Closed eyes is a fearful response. Akin to “learned helplessness, which is often mistaken as being tamed.

    I've seen my Tegus close their eyeballs as a way of saying "leave me alone" or "I do not want a fight". He clearly wants to be your buddy, he's just uneasy and unsure about his new area and new human. I think he's gonna be amazing for you. 🦎❤️

    I’ve learned that the closed eyes in a situation like this is a fear/avoidance response. Kind of like an “I can’t see you, you can’t see me, thing.”

      I think you're right, it's odd to see because working with the monitors they would never do that.

    Monitors and other large lizards like these guys, close their eyes when they feel threatened. He has basically accepted his fate at that point. You’ll notice any defensive, monitor or large lizard doing this. I love the videos man keep it up.

      That's what I'm seeing with this guy, I'm more accustomed to working with spicy monitors that don't close their eyes as much as they just wanna see what they're biting. Hoping we can bring this poor guy around soon, hate seeing any animal afraid like that.

      @@IntrepidExotics and that’s I subscribed man, i can relate to your mentality on working with these animals. You scream empathy brother. I have a blue tegu on coming next week. Hes a little guy, nothing like my old red. I’m excited to see how we do together as well.

    Great update. I like him deciding to lay down while you were sitting there. He wasn't trying to get to the bottom level to hide. He sure is on guard to movement. Poor guy.
    I don't know anything about reptiles but as a dog and cat person I am wondering when he closed his eyes around you today if that was a tiny bit of relaxing, especially when he was laying down.
    Is it possible that the closed fist may represent someone actually hitting him with the fist while tempting him with food? I would think that would mess with his mind.
    Take care.

    I think he closes his eyes because he's over stimulated so it takes some of his anxiety and helps him cope what's in front of him

    He is clearly looking for food when you reach for him. Be careful, I once had a large female grab my thumb through a feeding response and I thought the bone was being crushed!

      Often it would be a food response, this guy actually refuses to eat from hand or tong still, it's completely anxiety with him still.

    Awww he is so cute. You can tell he really wants to trust you but he's just not sure yet. I'm SOOO used to seeing Clint's Tegu "Gus-Gus". He's BEYOND puppy dog sweet. This is my first time seeing a Tegu that hasn't been sociolized yet. He'll be eating out of your hand in no time!
    P.s. I just gave a rude person a piece of my mind for insulting your abilities with reptiles! "MotherTrucker Reptiles has given the very first negative comment I've ever seen in here about you.😡 I hope you won't mind what i said to him. Big ol butt head😛

    • @IntrepidExotics
      @IntrepidExotics  29 дней назад

      She wasn't insulting my abilities; she has different experiences and techniques she uses and was trying to be helpful. I disagree with what she was suggesting because it would result in a bite with this particular animal, but it appeared to be in good faith. I don't know everything, I'm not always right and sometimes people will come along with advice for me that I can use to get better. I mean, the heart of what she was saying is right: the more trust I show the faster it's gained in most cases, but trusting a bitey animal like this one before it's time typically ends badly.

    It's so strange, because to me, closed eyes with my close presence would signify trust. And that's clearly not the case here, at least not yet. My own tegu closes her eyes while I'm massaging her jowls. I always thought that was trust. It's baffling that they do it when they aren't comfortable as well.

    My juvenile bolts at the door every time I come near. He wants food! I can not sit with the door open...he would jump right out, mouth open. I don't think he wants to hurt me...he wants to eat. Once he is full he doesn't bolt towards me. I've got to figure out how to get him to see me as not food. I'm getting more fearful as he gets bigger! Help!!!

    • @IntrepidExotics
      @IntrepidExotics  29 дней назад +1

      I'll try to remember to address this in the next vid while I'm feeding. Some things ya can do is to do a lot of handling outside of feeding times. Target training can help them recognize when it's time to eat, as can using one area of the enclosure for handling and another for feeding. Whatever it is ya do if it's the same every time they will start to differentiate :-)

    • @deannacorey5650
      @deannacorey5650 29 дней назад

      Thank you so much!! Day 4 video was amazing and really gave me hope!! I will try the target thing and using the other side of the cage for handling. That makes great sense!! Right now he just runs at the plexiglass doors...but I'll try to be more purposeful in my actions. I think I have to really figure out how not to be scared. He grew soooo fast!! Lol...and now ima bit worried about holding him.

    • @IntrepidExotics
      @IntrepidExotics  29 дней назад

      It's a trade-off...there's a time to trust and there's a time to pull back. When the possibility of a gnarly bite is there with a new animal that has already bitten I slow-roll it with em. :-) When an animal is coming in for a bite I'm not going to just watch it happen, lol.

    • @IntrepidExotics
      @IntrepidExotics  28 дней назад +1

      That's an intentional part of this that I explained in one of these videos...it's part of desensitizing him to the motion of my hands from the start which is huge in the long run for teaching them not to react to them.
