  • Many of us who keep reticulated pythons and have great relationships with them often have no problems socializing and handling those snakes at all. However, every now and then we may take in a snake that's had a rough life and is afraid of humans so we have to put in some extra effort to make those snakes comfortable.
In this video we talk with an experienced reticulated python keeper Steven who has taken in such and animal and wants to give it the best life by overcoming some hesitation from working with a defensive retic. If we all work together and help one another out when we can the reptile keeping hobby gets better, animals live better lives and we all become more confident in what we need to do to achieve these awesome relationships with our reptiles.

that hesitation is so HUGE when theyre on the edge like that. Awesome call outs Tim!! work on that execution and he'll be good to go. the fact that he knows what hes doin wrong says to me he'll be rockin n rollin n no time flat. awesome work by both!

Enjoyed this interaction. Beautiful snake on his best behavior. The treppedition on his owner' part is understandable. As his snake trust him, he will trust his snake more. Yesterday, Sunshine, my youngest Burmese Python, who is nothing like a Burmese Python, awakened me with a crash in the middle of the night. Going out the bedroom door, something, he grabbed my wrist sideways in a very strong bite, wrapped my arm, hand and wrist very tightly. I ran water on my arm and wrist with did not work. I unwrapped his tail and supported his body while reaching for Vodka. He let go, but his bottom teeth were stuck, unstuck the teeth while sunshine pooed and peed everywhere. I let him hide to calm down. He is putting on some size now. We were making progress, but this is a setback for Sunshine and me as well. He had been on the closet shelf, tried to climb down taking some heavy things with him, quickly slithered down the hallway and hung on to my doorknob. So he was upset and frightened when I came along. Not giving up on him, he can calm down in his enclosure, in a couple of days I will feed him. He should not have been hungry as he had eaten 4 days ago, so I know it was serious fear bite.

This snake looks fantastic- Steve did a great job rehabbing him- it’s amazing how much the snake calmed down!! (I didn’t know pied snakes had a reputation for being grumpy!!)🙂🙂
    Great video!!💚

I am not that fond of pied snakes, but that one is gorgeous. And he looks like he is going to take some work, but will end up being very handable and sweet. I would love to see a follow up video in the future.

Great session Tim and Steven 👍 That little pied is gorgeous! I think with a little time and handling, he will smooth out just fine.🙂 Confidence is key! I think they can pick up on your vibe. I think you were right Tim. He knew he was on camera, and played nice, as I saw nothing too alarming that would stop me from just going in a picking him up. I myself very rarely use a hook, more just to show the snake that I'm not holding my coloured tongs and it's not feeding time. Another great upload showing real life situations. I think this virtual help style will become popular, and you'll have people from all over asking for your services! 😁

It doesn't matter what kind of animal you have. If you're hesitant and afraid to pick them up, they're going to feel that energy and they too will become hesitant and afr? I could sense his fear from 2000 miles away. He saved that snake's life and the snake knows it.

I wanted to share an update, and a triumph. I applied your methods tonight, and we had the best handling session I've ever had! She was still a tad bit flighty, but she wasn't flailing around like a jolt of lightning hit her like she usually does, and she didn't strike at all while she was out. As someone else commented, hesitation is everything, and I definitely need to work on that. I'm going to continue working with her, and I believe in time she will calm down.

One of the biggest revelations I’ve had with dealing with defensive snakes is that interactions can take a very long time. Giving my snake an hour or two to think and process the scene lets them reset naturally to a calm demeanor. I try and do all I can to prevent them from learning helplessness and trusting that I’m safe.

I know this is an older video, but seeing this gives me hope. I have a zebra jungle carpet python that acts just like this. She was an owner surrender at the store I purchased her from and she was there for a little over a year. I have no idea how much she was handled, but I imagine not much, and she acts like she is just terrified everytime I open her enclosure. I want to work with her, but never really knew how. Thank you for making this video.

It's weird some people are better with observers and some (me) are far better without. Not just reptile handling. Everything. For my example I can't stand for people to watch me doing anything construction related. I'm going to fuck up somehow. If I'm absolutely alone.........everything is gold. One a different note. I know for a fact that feral cats don't jive with leather gloves. (I've been torn up a few times but the cats seem to absolutely know that gloves are a threat. It's weird. (that's my perspective.........everything is different)

This gives me confidence! I love soaking up knowledge from your videos! I stepped out of ball pythons and into boas. That hisss makes me a little uneasy. Any advice?

My boa will hiss at times when he wants to be left alone so I leave him alone :-) he's really gregarious when he wants to interact so I just let him decide most times :-)
