  • We took a small poll of some reptile keepers on what their greatest concerns and anxieties about keeping reptiles are, and you may be surprised to find that they aren't very different from the natural fears that folks have who have never kept reptiles. Whether you work with ball pythons and leopard geckos or with giant reticulated pythons and massive monitor lizards we all have some things that we deal with every time we work with an animal, so let's talk about it!

I wanted to add something for the people concerned about fire. This is a valid fear. Back in the day we didn't have the luxury of technology and indoor security cameras, but now we do. They are very sensitive to motion and sound. You can install the app on your phone and link it to your camera. So if something should happen you will get an alert on your phone. You can also just go on the app and get a live view from the camera and move it around 360°.

During all my years of keeping, my biggest fear is fire. I would be devastated, our snakes are regarded as family and 100’s of hours are invested in them and their wellbeing. Again I’d like to thank you for all that you do for the community. ❤🐍

I’m in an apartment building so yeah me too. Biggest thing is I have no control over another resident starting one even if I do everybting perfectly to not overload outlets, leave burners on, etc.

Fire terrifies me. One of my snakes recently burned his fool self and had a vet visit, and besides his squirming and complaining, he was a model patient with a very nice epiglottis, according to the vet. Even though his burns were incredibly minor, I felt terrible. I use thermostats and a heat gun with all of my reptiles and this still happened. In this hobby, there's no such thing as being too cautious. Living in the South, I also fear we may head FL's route in nonsense bans and restricting our rights to proper and ethical ownership. Great video, thanks for sharing.

Oh yeah. I'm a USARK and USARK FL member. I automatically give monthly to both and bought 2 USARK shirts. 1 with the tarantula on it and the other has a tortoise.

Some of my biggest fears involve my animals escaping. I keep a variety of small lizards and frogs, and for most of them, escaping could be a death sentence. I had a scare recently with my snake, thought he had an RI.

ADULT ADHD keeper here. My biggest fear is that I will have a shoulder snake out or an arboreal species basking on the bamboo trellis I affixed to the top of my bedside lampshade, and I either fall asleep or get so micro-focused on what I'm working on, that I won't even notice them slip quietly away into the chaos of my bedroom (remember? ADHD? =87 unfinished projects lying around providing FABULOUS hiding places, and of course, my closet door is open). But when it DOES happen, they always show up again, if not right away, then in a few days when I bring a delicious warm ratty into the room. There's a little 3 foot jungle carpet python loose right now. And I expect any time now to see him curled up on top of a picture frame, or my tall wardrobe, or likely the top of my closet. He'll be back. Just gotta keep the door closed! 😬😒🫣👢👠👡👟👗🧥🥼👖🩱👚👕🔝🛍📚📦👝🔜👒🧢💼🐍👜❔️👛❕️🎒🔙📦🧤🧦☑️😅

Keeping warm weather animals in cold states like NY. A power outage in winter can kill your animals pretty quick.
Multiple pets can stress you out since they won't get along. My 1 year old Boa was eying up my wife's Chihuahua today. She's not big enough to eat the dog yet but she was definitely giving her that look and posture like she does to rodents on food day. The dog is friends with the bearded dragon so she thinks the snake will be her friend too. The snake likes people and my son's baby rat snake but everyone else gets the evil eye and strike posturing. She only gets to see the rat snake at a safe distance. She has watched the rat snake eat and crawl around. She just watches curiously. I would worry more of the rat snake attacking the Boa, he's a little jerk.

If you have a reasonable place to have one set up look into backup inverter generators. 9500 watts can run 2 radiant oil filled heaters, belly heat, humidifier’s and a couple lights/fans. Saved my butt when we lost power a couple times

I have 12 snakes. Boas and Ball Pythons.
    But one of them.
A juvenile red tail just starts hissing.
    Every interaction im getting bit.
This snake doesnt have any "flee" in it.
    It makes me laugh.
She is just so scared .
Another one thats the same age lives right over the top of her.
    Shes no problem.
Im only 4 years into this and I handle all the others.

My biggest fear is just something dying. I love them all, but their is definitely ones I'm more attached to for sentimental reasons. After my son was born he wanted a snake, so we got a snow corn and later a baby chondro. These snakes grew up with him. I took them to school, summer camps and his birthday parties. I no longer have these snakes anymore and my son is almost 24. We're getting another chondro soon. Also, long before my son was born I had a red tailed boa constrictor while living with my parents. That snake died from Inclusion Body Disease. That was pretty bad and traumatic as my mother wasn't particularly a snake person, but was herself concerned about this boa. My mom ended up passing from cancer a few years later. I won't keep boas anymore mainly because I don't have the space now. I hate to say it, but death is part of keeping reptiles or any pet for that matter. You get attached. I've come to accept this and calmed down about it. Somewhat.
