  • It's impossible to overstate the joy of working with monitor lizards. Snakes with legs...scaley puppies...birds that can't fly away...2 year old children with 20 razor sharp claws and a fun bite force. Whatever ya want to compare them to, they are easily among the most unique animals we can keep.
    As reptile keeping becomes more popular and people are starting to develop an interest, there are some cautionary conversations we need to have with folks before committing to bringing one home. In other videos we talk about some of the requirements for them, and today we compare two popular monitor species that are readily available, very similar and concurrently very different in many cases. Which one is the best pet lizard for you? Let's compare and contrast them to find out.

    I will never own a large monitor myself. But like keeping venomous, I do it vicariously through my favorite RUclipsrs like you.

    As an Asian water monitor owner, I can say that they are one of the best pets I have owned, he has NEVER bitten me before,even if I open his mouth.

    The difference in temperament and reactivity is really evident here. I love Niles but Frazier looks like such a good boy. Great job comparing them, enjoyed this.

      Good deal, it's always great when we inherit good training instead of neglect. That's how my GTP came to me, the guy did an awesome job with him

    You keep talking about how reactive Niles and how you don't let your guard down, meanwhile he's looking like the most friendly and chill lizard on the planet. ❤

      Oh he looks that way :-) On two occasions the day I filmed he perked up and that mouth opened up. It's not menacing just him reacting but whether its a curiosity bite or a mean bite I prefer to avoid the bite altogether :-) A lot of the time he is really interactive like that but I still keep a really close eye on him because if he gets even a little surprised or even slightly inclined there may be a food opportunity he will definitely take a nip.

    I would love to have an AWM, but having a large monitor of any kind will not be an option for me as I have medical issues that give me physical limitations. So I have dreams of owning a smaller monitor. I wish we had access to all the different little monitors that Australia has... I'm always researching to see if they care an animal I'm interested in is something I can do. So far I have red ackie monitors and a green tree monitor on my potential wish list.
    I have worked in exotic pet shops as a kid (currently 50), and I would agree that the defensive issue with a lot of animals is being wild caught. The smarter the animal the more defensive initially too, in my opinion. I love the intelligence that is seen in their eye.

    Niles is really nice for a Nile monitor. Most are jerks. I'm sure it's more how you raised him. I had one years ago that tolerated me but never liked me. Water monitors seem to bond to their owners more than Nile monitors.

    From what I’m aware, Asian water monitors are a lot easier to tame down than Niles are
    Edit: I think another difference is size, your Nile might not get much bigger than he already is, but that Asian water monitor will get much bigger when he’s fully grown

    I love the look face of Nile Monitor. They have a badass and smart behavior, your temperament is bellicose. I saw one video in youtube in wich one Nile Monitor fight against one Honey Badger and the mamal won the fight easily. Since so, I keeping ask me: will be that one adult Nile Monitor Lizard, male and in good conditions of health can win of one Honey Badger in equal conditions? I bet that Nile Monitor lizard easily defeated don't reflect the truth about the skills for fight of nile reptile. If possible, I would like to know your evaluation about this fight. I admire your dedication to massive lizards. Greetings!!!

      @@IntrepidExotics , I read in an book about reptiles that one nile monitor lizard adult can cause more injuries than a crocodile of equal size. Is it truly or exaggerated?

    • @IntrepidExotics
      @IntrepidExotics  14 дней назад

      I would say exaggerated. Croc teeth would do a lot more damage than Niles would, and cross still have the tail whip. I've been locked-on to by Niles and besides some small holes it was fine

    Whats his age
    My asuan water monitor is 41 months old, 13 pounds and 61 inches long. Im thinking mine is just a smidgen bigger than yours.
    Mine is still growing around .5 to 1 inch a month

    The one nile monitor I had, in the '70s, was young and very defensive. Do they reach a point where they will carefully take food from your hand as I experienced with salvator monitors?

    • @IntrepidExotics
      @IntrepidExotics  3 месяца назад +1

      They can for sure, just naturally a bit trickier to work with

      @@IntrepidExotics The consensus among more experienced reptile keepers I knew back then was that niles couldn't be socialized. I've learned since then that that isn't correct. Apparently P. sebae is also more tameable than was reported back then. For large constrictors I mostly kept boas, burmese pythons, and anacondas. I only had retics on a temporary basis for people who asked me to find homes for them. I learned from experience that much I had learned from some of those older keepers was wrong.

    Heres how I see it
    Nile is 2 out of 10 times a great pet
    Water monitor is 5 out of 10 times a great pet
    White throat monitor is 7 out of 10 times a great pet
    Savanna monitor is 8 out of 10 times a great pet
    I love my asian water monitor and hes a sweetheart compared to most of them
    But he cant compare to a tamed throated monitor
