  • We normal go in-depth on reptile handling and husbandry, but today we talk about something that reaches far outside of the borders of the reptile hobby. This pivotal time in history when we are inundated with more information than we can process, with the loudest voices often being the most inaccurate and misleading, we collectively need to make a concerted effort to build a solid relationship with reality and learn how to sift through rhetoric and propaganda in order to build our world views around the truth.

    Thanks for putting this out there and saying it. We need more people willing to call out those who comprise their morals when it comes to who they vote for, and that goes on both sides of the aisle. Looking at your sources and vetting information is also very important, but sadly the people who need to hear it most are often the most blind to their own bias. 😢

    I enjoyed hearing you talk just like the last non reptile video you put out. Many people may watch for just the reptile portion and that’s fair, but I think you have more to share then just reptiles and I hope you can continue to put out information or start discussions on topics other than reptiles if it’s something you believe in doing. I’m only subscribed to you and Kevin and it’s because after being exposed to each of you I thought you both were very knowledgeable and great to learn from. It’s cool when both of you put out videos that are about your more general feelings about things it has the same sense of knowledge and insight that you have with reptiles.

    I strongly dislike the bipartisan system. It colors nearly every issue in politics and outside of them. Extremes are awful and no radical left or radical right position is a solution. What matters is consider the source of where your information is coming from, consider if there is bias in the information, and what the goal of the information is. The bickering and left vs right I feel is just a ploy to distract us from real issues, like the rich taking advantage of the rest of America and creating such a wealth deficit the middle class does not exist and everything below being able to own a house is abject poverty. But taking one side with all issues and every problem that comes up blinds you to growth, change, and developing your own values. Refusing to be intellectually challenged is what stunts our country and our people and leaves us vulnerable to radicalization. Great video, you've got excellent points and a sound argument.

    This reminds me of what one of our politicians said the other week. He said " our main parties, are just 2 cheeks of the same arse". Now i don't normally agree with this person at all, I did think he made a fair point on this. Thats pretty much all I can say, as I'm not up on American politics, however it does sound like its going the same way the UK is. I don't know how we are going to get out of the mess we're in here, our conservative party ( American wise, they'd be Republican ) have turned into Labour ( American Democrats). Whoever you vote for you end up with the same. If you don't vote you end up with the same. Every day that goes by, without these islands erupting into major league civil unrest, is a blessing. As a lot of people say here " the only person to enter parliament with honest intentions, was Guy Fawkes"

      So, Burmese pythons are an invasive species that must be banned from New York. Reticulated pythons are deadly, wild animals that should never be kept. Two examples of not-true statements that we fight in order to maintain our rights to keep these animals every year to people who spread misinformation and blatant lies about these animals. There is not one aspect of our lives that does not benefit from explaining the merits of truth.

      @@IntrepidExotics the snakes have no idea what politics are and can't defend themselves. The nation is so divided on politics that any take anyone says will antagonize someone else, which could dilute rallying the reptile community on reptile specific issues, More people that like reptiles will find common ground that they like reptiles then that they like both reptiles and something else. I apologize for being argumentitive about something which i have no disagreements with.

      You're fine, it's complex. I thought long and hard about approaching these topics and came to the conclusion that the only thing that defends our rights is democracy, that's how we shut down bans. Trump is understood by the entire world to be a threat to democracy with a mountain of evidence to support it. Short term, ill piss off some people. In fairly short order history will validate everything the same way it has til now though and I think it brings some vital points to light. I'm pretty confident everything will come out in the wash in time.

      @@user-zq3wt4qq9b I understand your stance. I personally didn't see this as a divisive commentary though. The merits of truth transcend political stances. I saw this as more of a philosophy discussion than a political science one even though examples were drawn in that arena. However it is a "way of thinking" for lack of a better phrase, that can be and should be applied to a lot of things, the reptile community included. I can't think of a situation in which people educating themselves from both sides of an argument and gathering credible sources would cause more dissent in the reptile hobby.

    I'm someone who leans slightly more conservative, so I get it. But I'm probably not going to change too many people's political values, or what side of the aisle they stand on, so I don't try. Just don't get all of one's information from only one source of information, and come to your own conclusions on the issues yourself. Both Democrats and Republicans only care about power (not about you), and all they really do is accuse each other of doing the same things they're doing, while only being interested in pushing their extreme party values, left or right.

    • @IntrepidExotics
      @IntrepidExotics  3 месяца назад +5

      I get the sentiment and appreciate a centrist outlook, but to say both parties today are equally corrupt and power-driven for powers sake is a clear false equivalency That's objectively demonstrable through every metric from rhetoric to policy to current legislative activities. This doesn't even take into account the number of indictments and convictions for numerous crimes by numerous people that are heavily unbalanced to the right.

    • @ericroscoe8654

      Both are too old to run again. I would have much rather seen someone fresh on the "R" ticket, but a rematch between 2 old guys of 2020 was what our country wanted, I guess.
      I just don't know whether I could objectively say that one side of the aisle is worse than the other when both take pretty much everything they say or do out of context to begin with, or that the orange man is responsible for all the bad on social media. So what are your examples of silos on the left, or is this a problem only with the right?

  • @user-zq3wt4qq9b

    I like the way you think, and I applaud your outspokeness. You can't truly love animals and the environment without having at least some moral backbone. Thank you so much for saying that America has never been as great as it is right now. Too many people can't realize this fact. Going backwards is stupid dangerous and destructive. The rise of authoritarianism is scary af and the massive hypocrisy and malevolence required to cloak it in patriotism and religion should be plain for anyone to see. Life would be so much easier and people would be much more equipped to rise above all the bullshit and hatred if we could only wrest power from the one percent and put it in the hands of the people. Everyone is bitter from working their fingers to the bone and still not having any room to breath and their fears and prejudices are much easier to be manipulated by demigogues that way, and as long as the interests of the shareholders aren't in jeopardy the powers that be won't lift a finger. It's up to us. We've seen all this play out at various points throughout history and we're seeing it now in multiple parts of the world and the results are always unspeakable. It's an exciting time to be alive, it's true, but it's scary af at the same time. Runaway neoliberal capitalism might be the death of us all, save for the billionaires in their egyptine bunkers and spaceships. Thanks again. Never stop speaking truth.

      My gripe with that animal is complex, as are a lot of issues, so I’ll try and keep it minimal for the sake of this medium.
      One, he referred to it as a cosmetic defect. The whole skull was malformed. Its jaw was fully crooked and it didn’t even develop one eye. There is a strong, strong likelihood that other malformations took place as a result of this genetic deficiency, and an even stronger possibility that neurological issues arise from that skull deformation.
      Second, and exposed mouth is essentially an exposed wound on an animal and needs far more than normal care.
      Now there’s the argument that this animal should be priced high to be given to a quality home. I disagree. I think if no questions are asked, that’s a barely OK metric to assume the animal gets good care (I’ve investigated as many wealthy people for animal neglect as I have the impoverished). But I am firmly of the belief that the only way to find a proper home for this animal is by vetting the buyer/recipient.
      The reason why I have an issue with the price tag is twofold. 1) this animal is going to cost a lot of money to upkeep. Even if the only variable is time. But it will require a cleaner environment, more regular vet care, and more attention to feeding. On top of that, it is not a candidate for breeding as these deformities could very well be heritable. This is not an investment animal, it is a rescue project.
      The second aspect is that it serves as fuel for the opponents who wish to categorize breeders as exploitative of animals and greedy. Selling healthy animals with education and proper husbandry is the only antidote to that perception, and Aza reptiles and NERD selling deformed animals at full price emphasizes the oddity and mutation over the animal and takes us away from any claims that were preserving nature, or interested in the species at all. That animal will not live a pleasant life and to celebrate in that and profit in that is really going to rub people the wrong way, and here we are.

    • @IntrepidExotics
      @IntrepidExotics  3 месяца назад

      Good points, definitely respect the rationale. I still get the impression that this particular seller would vett the buyer and would also bet that anyone that would spend 4k on that animal would be aware of the issues and considerations. We run the risk with any animal of buyers lying about their knowledge and intentions or sellers being irresponsible and those are things to address after they happen and not to rip someone apart that has not yet done that and has no intention to.
