We get an SOS from a keeper sometimes that's wanting some help working with their snakes whether it be advice on handling or a genuine problem animal. We have a great example of how keeper anxiety can prevent us from having the confidence to properly handle an uneasy snake. Socializing is all about making the animals comfortable and displaying confidence that allows the animals to trust us. There are some good teaching points here to go over.

Great video, and big props to this guy for being okay with letting you show people his mistakes so we can all learn to be better animal keepers. Really looking forward to seeing updates on the progress here!

Geez. Not trying to roast the guy but if you go into it with negative energy, of course that’s what you’re gonna get back from the snake. Hopefully he learns so he can build a trusting relationship with that snake. By the way, I got back from my Kentucky trip to my cousin’s facility… I couldn’t decide between a retic or a Burm so I got both!😂I missed the last stream but I’ll be there this weekend! Great video Tim!

Your videos have been so helpful. I don’t have a big snake but it’s my first one and I used to be terrified of them. You’ve really helped me learn how to engage with them.

Awesome video, thanks! I can imagine it's one thing to get a baby snake who will grow big with you and another to get an adult snake you might know nothing about personality vise.
This snake happily looked very mild mannered and if I was this guy, I think I would start building trust simply by sitting around her enclosure. As I'd get more comfortable, I would even open the door and let the snake come out on its own while I would remain on the floor, let her touch me, give her calm mannered pets and get to know her that way.
I hope they get to build up mutual trust, she is a very gorgeous girl!

Although this was hard to watch, I saw pieces of myself with my very first snake that I was afraid of after it bit me a couple times. I ended up rehoming that one and getting a younger snake that I could grow with better. It has made me a much better handler. As well as Tim and the series with Silent Bob. I look forward to the possibility of seeing this keeper grow as well. Thank you Tim! All learning starts with ignorance. Peace and kindness matter.

I'm glad you're able to be calm and educate calmly about these mistakes. I feel like there can only be good things to have happen when there's an environment where people feel safe enough to be vulnerable to their mistakes and feel supported while they fix them. It does no one any good, especially the animals, if the owner is witch hunted.

I love your philosophy on encouraging others to respectfully lecture each other as opposed to bashing them for their mistakes. Even if what we see from someone comes from blatant ignorance and irresponsibility, we should always try and be respectful when voicing our criticisms. That sense of negativity really isn't doing any favors for the world at all. Who knows what could have happened if even more fear was instilled in this already anxious individual and their animal. Kudos to this guy for reaching out though, I hope to see things improve in the near future and would love to see a follow up on this whole situation!

Another slice of fried gold 🌟 Tim. We couldn't agree more with your assessment of her initial behavior. The extended hovering over her really made things worse. Like many animals, they have to trust you, or things will go south. Keep 'em coming, Screaming Eagle.👊🏾🪖🇺🇸✝️

I can see where you would say that, but this guy was reaching out for help. This is what Tim talks about when he says to be kind. This is one man that will change and improve his skills and may even pass the help on. I handled my 1st snake (older boa) almost like this myself in the very beginning with no mentor. I even rehomed that first older snake. It would be so discouraging if I had been told not to handle snakes at all. Make sense?

It looks like the hook has been homemade. And that's why it's got the pointed into it. It's not round like the ones you use to tap them down. I gotta tell you. That was hard to watch that guy had no idea what he was doing.

I feel that if you are negatively crucifying this guy, and you follow Tim... you are missing the point here. Learning starts with ignorance - Ignorance is not a bad thing if there is a true willingness to learn. This guy reached out! He's already demonstrated that he doesn't understand and wants to learn simply by letting Tim put this video up and critique every move. This was a scary thing to do. And this is a good thing.

  • @snakenook

First and foremost, to the person that submitted the video asking for help with handling a snake that he’s had a short of time, good on you! Tim, did a great a job analyzing the handling session. I noticed that the snake was curious about the enclosure door popping open, and was possibly looking for food. She didn’t appear enclosure defensive, but given that she’s in relatively new surroundings, she’s pretty calm. The tool used for handling this snake was not a good choice, but at least now, the snake owner knows that he shouldn’t use it next time. That’s one learning point. Another learning point is that it’s important to read snake body language because he kept anticipating the worst, but the snake wasn’t defensive, but eventually had to defend herself against the hook. And finally, the last learning point is that approaching a snake with fear, will ultimately cause the snake to have a reason to fear the encounter based on how the person is acting towards it. Lots for everyone to learn from here. Thanks Tim! 👍🏼

Feeding a snake before handling is just foolish. Her food response is activated any time he handles her. That hook is an assault weapon! So very sorry for the beautiful snake. She is not only on food alert, she is being hurt. I am glad her owner is amenable to improving his interaction with his snake. All of us can learn something. Thank you Tim.

1st rule of keeping a Snake: Overcome any fears you have of them before getting one and especially snakes among other reptiles as Humanity is pretty much hard wired to fear them .. 1st things 1st and the fear has to be nutralized before hand or it will never work out well for the snake or the would be keeper imo..

That hook is way to thin for a heavy body snake. This is a horrible watch, I hope someone can help him, even if they're local and can go mentor him. I have an African Rock Python who is very vocal, but I'm not scared of her. The day I become scared is the day it's best for everyone concerned she's rehomed. But that day will never come as, I'm aware of what she's like and I'll never put her into a position she needs to get defensive

Already approaching the snake as though everything bad that Could happen.. Would happen. Then proceeding to show you his conclusion is correct, when in fact it was he that caused said conclusion.
The entire experience I just watched was a self fulfilling prophecy.
It's hard to stick to constructive criticism when it's such a terrible handling technique coupled with an improper use of a snake hook and an extremely negative Mindset.
Please do not own any animal that you cannot understand or cater for. There's no shame in that, it's the right thing to do.

Man, everything right down to the tone of your voice is translated in energy transfer to that animal and you can tell it didn’t even know how to react to him initially. You must be positive and confident with any animal, or they sense that fear and wavering courage to interact with them. He kind of did the whole self-fulfilling prophecy thing by stating all of the possible negative outcomes aloud, directly heightening the negative energy and turning that into a very bad situation. Then doing the whole false start handling and then drop that snake back into the enclosure after poking with that pitchfork. Ugh
