  • This week a venomous reptile keeper known throughout the community of keepers as unpleasant and grossly irresponsible was nearly killed by a juvenile inland tai-pan, an Australian snake known to be among the world's most venomous. Jeff Liebowitz used social media to draw attention to his grossly negligent free-handling methods with his venomous snakes and after multitudes of fellow keepers implored him to stop putting the community in a bad light, and after scorning anyone who spoke-up, the worst came to pass and Jeff was left fighting for his life, pleading for the same antivenom he chastised others for keeping for their snakes.
Here we discuss how the media covered the incident, what they got wrong, how it can impact the reptile community, and what we can do collectively to help all keepers to stay safe and have great experiences with their animals.

None of the more popular RUclipsrs have enough nerve to speak on how Jay harasses his big snakes and gets them to lunge at him. Everyone’s afraid to speak up about it so I really respect you for mentioning it. It’s a shame to see animals harassed for social media likes or to build up views on your channel. Do things the right way when you know better 🥴. Don’t mean to be ugly towards anyone but it’s sad to see and scary how it could have an impression on others who don’t know better.

jay is going down, look at the views on his channel, they are so low its unheard of for a channel with 6+ mill subs. And even though i agree, he should have been called out way more by the rest of the society i do find it encourageing that its not a good idea to behave so horrible towards your animals as he does. You dont have to be an experienced reptile owner to use your eyes, and no animal will bite you if you dont provoke it,if you get bitten a lot, people know what that means when they watch him claiming he loves his animals and then get them to bite him.

We all need plans if we can not take care of our animals Take the bite completely off the table, if he got in a car accident, had a stroke, heart attack, or even caught a virus that put him in the hospital, he needed options to care for his animals.

It is great to see your responsible and informative videos. As an Australian from the bush - in a region where Taipans and other highly venomous snakes are present - it is staggering to read that inland taipans are even available to keep in peoples homes in the US - let alone by an obviously reckless and very poorly educated snake handler. The inland Taipan in fact has the most toxic venom of any snake in the world - with a single bite capable of killing 200 000 mice ( but they are generally shy and in natural habitat rarely come into contact with people) . But if provoked and poorly handled then the consequences are enormous. Where I live we learn to respect snakes from very early childhood - and that if we leave them alone they will leave us alone.

@@Robaus79 While I am not doubting that in the slightest, it would be useful if you could name/link your source. Without knowing where it came from, it's really hard to look into further. Also, the quote clearly contains plenty of citations, which is usually a good sign, but you haven't included the part that has the actual footnotes. It's kinda useless knowing that footnote 18 is relevant to this is we don't know what footnote 18 says ...
That said, as an Australian myself, I can definitely corroborate what you're saying about being taught basic respect for the animal. We don't have anything that crazy around here, the most we have is a Red-bellied Black snake or the (very) occasional Tiger snake, but we're taught the same: Leave it alone; it's perfectly happy going about its day, you should just go about yours (and make sure you don't step on it, or near enough that it feels threatened).

It doesn't matter. When the authorities get involved and laws start getting drafted, the nuances get washed away. "All Exotics" and "All Venomous Reptiles" will be what the laws say. What makes a species "Exotic"? I have a Western Hognose and I live in PA. Strictly speaking...from the standpoint of the PA Dept. of Wildlife...it's "exotic." It's also, venomous. Are the questions really that different if it was a Cobra? What if it gets out? It's an "invasive" species. What if it "bites" someone? It is, like I said, venomous. Not only that, you need to take a look at local laws already: I live in PA which means I can't keep any "locally occurring species" (to stop people from "harvesting" local species)--that means I have to keep an "exotic" species--though ironically, if I have a hunting and fishing license I CAN actually harvest and keep TWO TIMBER RATTLESNAKES (go figure 🙄). So, if PA or my local jurisdiction decides to outlaw "exotic" and/or "venomous" species then I am breaking the law with my little Hognose...

Jeffrey should never be allowed to have any type of presence on RUclips again. What he was allowed to film and present was completely irresponsible and reckless. That said, my next opinion will probably not be shared by most people in the reptile community. But, I don't believe that any individual, in any state should be allowed to keep any venomous reptiles any more potent that a hognose snake, mangrove snake, vine snake, etc. Only licensed zoos, wildlife facilities, venom labs and other educational facilities should be permitted to keep dangerously venomous reptiles. Freedom is the ability to do whatever you feel like doing, it is the responsibility to choose to do what is right, for yourself and those around you.

    • @rickrice8102
      @rickrice8102 6 дней назад +1

@@IntrepidExotics I was anticipating that someone would probably raise that question. first of all, firearms are protected under the second amendment, venomous reptiles are not. I wouldn't compare an inanimate tool with a living unpredictable animal. When someone is killed and a gun is involved, it is not the gun's fault, it is the person who pulled the trigger. If a crime was involved then the person pays for that crime, not the gun. And we do have regulations around gun ownership. In most states you need a permit to carry a handgun. In most states you need to take a firearm safety course as well. A gun will never act independently and kill someone on it's own. So, the gun does not need to be regulated, the person does.
Same with lethal venomous reptiles. In the state of FL you need to have a license to keep venomous reptiles and the FWC will inspect your facility and make a determination as to whether you can keep them or not. You also need to have a valid reason for wanting to keep them, either for research or for education. Why is it that some states have no regulations or guidelines? I love Gaboon Vipers. I loved them as a kid. I think they are the most beautiful snake out there and I always wanted to own one. As I've gotten older I'm content to look at them in a zoo or at a licensed keeper's facility. The think with Hot reptiles, if you own them long enough, you're eventually going to get tagged. Look at the top RUclips producers like Chandler and Tyler. I believe Tyler has been bitten twice and Chandler almost died last year from handling venomous snakes. Should that be a right that everyone should have indiscriminately? Often times they are putting others at risk and not just themselves. I don't think that licensing and permitting people with a valid reason for owning these animals is unreasonable.

This was a good video, and I like your perspective on this.
Something I noticed in the news clip that you showed that made so angry was the way they used the snake's eye view footage. That made me so angry because the message that sent was, "These VENOMOUS animals could get out, slither into your backyards, and get you too!" Or, and this is something I've seen elsewhere, people think they will get out, become an eatablished invasive species, and become a permanent danger. The usage of that footage was very intentional.
I dont keep snakes, but I follow people who keep hots... responsibly. They don't freehandle, have their animals in secure spaces, have bite protocols, and respect what their snakes can do. Jeff's actions could hurt them, and I know they're worried about the legislative repercussions.

In the early 2000s you could own just about anything that wasn't native (and a lot that was) in Oregon. That changed in the early 2000s when a pet alligator escaped its owner's house and terrified the neighbors. It was big news at the time. Soon afterwards legislators passed a law banning crocodilians, venomous snakes, wild felids & canines (& most hybrids of them) etc etc. you need a license now to have those animals, which also opens your facility up to inspections. That's an example of how one bad owner can mess things up for a lot of folks.

Thumbs up from me. In the UK there has been a similar issue, minus the venomous bite, but apparently someone was constricted by a Burmese Python. The headlines did all the usual uneducated snake things and PETA and the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Protection of Animals) called for an outright ban on keeping all exotic animals! Keepers of these animals have to be responsible. If making RUclips videos be responsible - don't handle venomous snakes freely, IMHO, don't handle them at all on camera - the camera is a distraction that you do not need. Wear appropriate clothing. I had a black King snake attack my big toe when feeding it and I was barefoot. Lesson learned - it didn't hurt and it was an older juvenile, but it would have been different if it was my adult Burmese. There will always be irresponsible idiots, idiots that put themselves in harms way. My Venomous creatures were tarantulas. I never handled them except by moving them into a cut off plastic bottle to carry out maintenance or to put with a female for breeding.
I stopped telling people about my hobby as all it would take is one malicious individual and I could potentially have them seized and be prosecuted for a dirty water bowl in a snake enclosure that I hadn't got round to cleaning out. It is just not worth it.
My advice, don't film your animals. If you have to for whatever reason, be responsible, act responsibly, show the correct precautions, educate, don't glamorize. I would also question why keep venomous snakes that really could kill you, even as a hatchling unless you are carrying out scientific research or milking venom for antivenom production. It is a risk to you, your kin, neighbours and so on. Even the most professional hobbyist makes a mistake and that could cost the hobby quite dearly through knee jerk local legislation.

It's a dramatic story, beause not many people keep deadly reptiles. And the panic online proves you ALL think it's a front page, dramatic story. Don't be disingenuous, practices among animal keepers SHOULD be noted when something rare and deadly exists in normally placid neighborhoods. I'm not for more laws, but animal husbandry and its effects on the public requires our educated concern. Photos of the wrong snake notwithstanding, they did show some of his OTHER captive species. Make no mistake, watching his vids post-bite, he's a careless jerk who should have no pets, imo. But the media covered a story that def WAS dramatic for many. Describing Jeff's conduct as "an outlier" is rather generous to outliers.
Free-handling an inland taipan for Facebook views with zero access to antivenin (and declaring "it's for pussies") is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.
I'm not a keeper, but I've been following this story for weeks because the idiocy was so awe-inspiring.
This bite will be written about for years. It's difficult to overstate the caliber of moron the world was introduced to here.

I know Tyler Nolan has Batman and Robin huge Rattlesnakes and he free handles his King Cobra but his snakes love and trust him

Snakes do not love or trust you. They tolerate you. Show me a snake that is capable of showing love! Thinking a snake loves or trusts you will get you but. Why? Because you get complacent and careless. You get to relaxed around the snake.

@virgildailey1970 any creature that can feel fear can feel contentment. Love is an abstract concept that has no physical definition, therefore anyone who claims anything that is capable of feeling anything is somehow forfeit love is little more than engaging in egocentric ramblings. Opinions from those who lack understanding are worth less than the dirt under our feet.

nothing is drawing more attention to it than every one making a damn video about it for views. sometimes the best policy is to look the othr way

That is the weakest display of dumbasserry I've read yet. "the best policy is to look the other way" is a philosophy that has allowed the worst of human nature to do the most damage to our planet and every species on it, including our own. May I suggest if you feel this was about views and not the message, "look the other way"...the rest of us have problems to address.
