    Being a river only fisherman I watch and enjoy. There is a river I fish ( my favorite) where most of the year midges are the main attraction. We tie something called the black midge pupa. Sizes 28-32. I now tie these on 10X tippet and thanks to you, store them on the foam rings so I'm not trying to tie them on while on the river. Even an old dog can learn new tricks.

      @@ross1458 Hello Michael, thank you very much for your comment. In many respects, I admire any fly tyer that ties a bunch of midge pupae in size 32 hooks. It is clearly a requirement for the particular river that you fish, otherwise you wouldn’t tie so small. I’m pleased that I was able to help with your preparation and I am assuming that the fish that you are catching with 10X, are relatively small? As far as tippet goes for this size of fly, providing that the tippet goes through the eye of the hook, it is more about flexibility of the tippet. How the fly lands and how the fly fishes. Michael, send me a photo if you will, to my email address, of your flies and tell me which brand of tippet you are using.😉

      @@neilsspanishflybox Sorry so late getting back to you. The fly is actually pretty simple. A very small amount of cdc tied shuttlecock style. A thread body (or very very lightly dubbed) with the whip finish at the back of the fly. As far as the size of the fish on 10X tippet. It helps to use a full flex rod. I like an old Orvis Superfine 2 wt. 7'6". You won't cast very far but it works. We have an unofficial club here called the 10-20-30 club that I became a member of the second time I fished these crazy things. 10X tippet, 20" of better trout, on a 30 or smaller fly. Mine was a 21" Brown. That trout actually had another angler's 32 stuck in its teeth. It was olive I was fishing black. The tippet is Varias. Finding the hooks anymore is near impossible. Its a 518 Tiemco. I'll work on the pictures.

    Hi Neil, Nice one, would love to give it a try. Any special dressing you use on this fly to keep it floating longer? I always have trouble keeping dry flies with hair on the surface for a longer time. Thanks!

    • @neilsspanishflybox
      @neilsspanishflybox 18 дней назад

      Hello there, good to hear from you. The quantity that you use is more important, depending how high or low you want it to ride. With the cdc over wing and aero wing in the tail, it should ride without too much floatant - I use gel that is also good for cdc if necessary, but a little of any floatant will do the job. Each time that you catch a fish, rinse it off, shake it dry and I use some Loon dust to dry it off. Loon top ride is another product that I use, 👍

If it is larger fish, that may have taken a little longer to get into the net, I whoosh them around in the net to get some oxygen through their gills before releasing them. I’ll try and keep them a tad longer in the net before releasing them. To be fair, in this video, most of them were lost in the bottom of the net, they were that small!!😂

If you use the tips on a size 18 or 20 hook, for example, there’s no real need to cut out the stem, as it is very fine and like wise, separation, in my view, is unnecessary. just draw them through under a couple of wraps of thread, then stand them up with thread or thorax material.😉

      @neilsspanishflybox Месяц назад

      Hello Steve, we often tie shucks, in their various forms, on dry flies as emergers. I think this fly looks so out of kilter, because the shuck is relevant to the size of the fly and it is a large fly! If you tie some up, be careful not to over dress the top and bottom deer hair wings, 15 or so fibres is ok. I think the original Retirer had a grey aerowing type fibre between the deer hair, but I quite like the tan. This fly was first tied during an international competition and I think the materials and tools that he had to hand were limited, hence no use of a hair stacker? It’s ’rough and ready’, but an extremely effective fly.👌

      Hello there! Good to hear from you. In my opinion, the lamina sheets are thinner than tinsels, so I am happy to use them for total cover or collars, but I occasionally use uv tinsel for ribbing. I believe Veniard offer a range of uv lámina sheets. I buy mine from a Spanish company called Urruzuno, who offer a large range of láminas, but only purple and clear olive in uv. Here is a link to the company - there is the availability of viewing the site in English. You need to look under ‘fly tying’ and specifically for ‘URZ Shotgun Foil’. www.urruzuno.com/es/lamina-perdigon-urz/ I hope this helps.☺️

      @@zigazigman5427 Hello again, as I have said previously, tinsel will be thicker than laminate film, but if you feel that tinsel will be easier to use or easier to procure, then look for uv tinsel in any suppliers catalogue and see if they have the specific colour that you are looking for. Good luck.

    You did your research. Being old enough to have fished the original Walt's I was shocked when I first saw the "modern" bead head jig hook version. But it works no matter. Anywhere there is vegetation in the water there will be sow bugs and cress bugs. Even though the USA team uses it I don't see it as a Euro nymph style. I tie mine tight then pick the thing to death. So it doesn't fall fast like most of the competition nymphs. The modern Walt's is a lazy man's Hare's Ear. But it works well. I think it will work for you. I've seen veg in the water on your videos. You tied it well.

      Hello Michael, thank you for your very kind comments and your personal views on tying and fishing the Walt’s worm. I will certainly give it a go when I have the right conditions to fish it and when I do, you, along with many others, will be with me to witness it getting wet!😉 Thanks again .👍
