  • Welcome (Bienvenidos) to Neil’s Spanish Fly Box, where we take a look at some of the flies used in Spain and elsewhere.
¿Hola, que tal? En principio, este es un video diseñado para pescadores que entienden inglés, pero por supuesto, ¡cualquiera puede verlos! Si eres un pescador de habla hispana y te gustaría comentar en español, te responderé en español. ¡No seas tímido!
Learn about some new (some, not so new) and interesting fly patterns, that can be found in every Spanish fly fisherman’s armoury, including some ‘must haves’! Real flies for real fly fishers.
I have fly fished in Spanish competitions for over a decade, on rivers and still water, learning a great deal about the Spanish way of fishing and the flies that are used.

Looks great!! I haven't caught many fish on a Walt's, but it is a popular fly.

Hello Bob, thank you for your generous comment. Many consider the Walt’s Worm to be a form of panacea and I’m sure in certain rivers and circumstances, it catches many trout - but clearly, not for everyone!😉

I'd call it a Hare's ear. But it never matters-all nymphs are fine anywhere.I am a cynic of all the flie patterns. but still love them and time many of course. I think maybe five patterns would do anywhere. I was tod that years ago and I now believe it from experience. Still love trying different patterns of course. :-)

Hello Terry, really good to hear from you and I trust that you are well. The theory of just five flies or as some of my fellow creators would say, ‘the only fly you’ll ever need!’, is that when you are having a bad day and not catching fish, you’ll never know if you could have done better, with the sixth fly? Although I know that you try other flies, some cynical anglers will be saying, “if I can’t catch with these, there aren’t any fish there”. I have boxes and boxes, but I don’t take them all onto the river. It is more about, species, time of the year, different sizes etc. and selecting what you think you need for that visit. Not a lot of fun in getting it wrong however!!🤦‍♂️ Stay safe and well.

You did your research. Being old enough to have fished the original Walt's I was shocked when I first saw the "modern" bead head jig hook version. But it works no matter. Anywhere there is vegetation in the water there will be sow bugs and cress bugs. Even though the USA team uses it I don't see it as a Euro nymph style. I tie mine tight then pick the thing to death. So it doesn't fall fast like most of the competition nymphs. The modern Walt's is a lazy man's Hare's Ear. But it works well. I think it will work for you. I've seen veg in the water on your videos. You tied it well.

Hello Michael, thank you for your very kind comments and your personal views on tying and fishing the Walt’s worm. I will certainly give it a go when I have the right conditions to fish it and when I do, you, along with many others, will be with me to witness it getting wet!😉 Thanks again .👍

That is indeed a fine Mustard Walt’s. Please let us know if you fish it and whether it produces for you.
