  • Welcome (Bienvenidos) to Neil’s Spanish Fly Box, where we take a look at some of the flies used in Spain and elsewhere.
¿Hola, que tal? En principio, este es un video diseñado para pescadores que entienden inglés, pero por supuesto, ¡cualquiera puede verlos! Si eres un pescador de habla hispana y te gustaría comentar en español, te responderé en español. ¡No seas tímido!
Learn about some new (some, not so new) and interesting fly patterns, that can be found in every Spanish fly fisherman’s armoury, including some ‘must haves’! Real flies for real fly fishers.
I have fly fished in Spanish competitions for over a decade, on rivers and still water, learning a great deal about the Spanish way of fishing and the flies that are used.

😂😂 ¿Crees? Como estas? Pues estuve un día fuera de casa en un entorno precioso, pero entre poca agua y cormoranes, una visita para olvidar!! Quizás la próxima visita va mejor.🤞

    Your basic food chain!

Hello, you are absolutely correct, but in any food ‘chain’, there has to be food available for the chain to continue. Where there is no natural fish stock and it is dependant upon human replenishment, the chain breaks if the replenishment stops! I can fully understand the predicament that clubs and associations face; the cost of purchasing the trout just to feed cormorants….. I have explained previously, but rainbow trout are now considered an invasive species in Spain and must be introduced as triploids, so that no reproduction takes place. Hopefully, the cormorants will go back out to sea when the food runs out!😉

@@neilsspanishflybox stocking trout is very expensive. Are there no native trout in the area in which you regularly fish? I see Zebra trout are considered native. Are there any others?

@@chili1593 Hello again. Zebra trout are not a species as such, they are a variety of brown trout that have a dark banding, which is distinct, but varies from river to river. It is a name given by other than Spanish anglers, but believed to be just a form of camouflage. Not all rivers carry a large head of natural brown trout and where they exist, they may well be protected by the absence of fishing. From my personal perspective, to find permissible brown trout fishing, I would be looking at 5-6 hour round trip……which shortens the fishing time somewhat!☺️

@@neilsspanishflybox welcome to my world. That’s my drive time to a respectable trout habitat. I thus feel your pain.

Sucks about the cormorants! Just curious, what brought you to Spain?

Hello Alan, good to hear from you. In answer to your question, I think it was a Boeing 737?🤔 😂 We retired reasonably early and thought that it was a fine alternative to retiring in the the UK.

What a day. As close I’ve heard you to saying naughty words. 😅. Gin clear is always rough but on my favorite river it seems to be that or flooding. But you got out. Better luck next time. Thanks for the video.

@@ross1458 Hello Michael. Indeed, I’m proud of how restrained I was!!😂 After I lost the fish, it wasn’t until I went to tie on another nymph, that I noticed that the end of the leader was not a clean break. It had a slightly frayed end from the rock rub. My fault, I should have checked it before I started fishing again.🙈 I think it will be a few weeks before I visit that part of the river - not until the cormorants have gone out to sea and the river has been restocked!😳

@@neilsspanishflybox I will never forget catching the biggest Bow of my life on 8x tippet and thinking I should retie the fly but first cast a big Brown hit it and just kept going. lol. I was sick and the air was blue with inappropriate words about myself. Still really enjoyed the video. Things will pick up.
