Making a DIY WATERCOLOR SKETCHBOOK for your Urban Sketching needs
After trying a bunch of different watercolour sketchbooks and searching up and down the market, I couldn't find a perfect one for my current needs. So I decided to make one. Epic stuff !! You earned my subscription
Thankyou and welcome aboard ❤️
the colors look very good ......very great sketchbook
Thankyou! Glad you enjoyed it.
As far as anybody who might try to tell you that working from photographs is not "true" urban sketching goes, you'll find a lot of these self-appointed gatekeepers of the Craft saying things like this, but that's sheer nonsense. It's as valid as actually being on scene and who's to tell the difference in the finished work anyway?
I stay away from any nomenclature debates of what is a 'true' urban sketch. Everyone is free to enjoy what they enjoy. However, in my experience, I feel there is a noticeable difference in any scene I sketch in-situ as opposed to from a reference photo. These videos are my best attempt to replicate a in-situ sketch.
Thanks for the new tip of moistening the folded side to facilitate a deckle edge tear.
You are most welcome, Gail!
Wow it’s so impressive you managed to paint this on hot press 😂 I find it’s sooo difficult to get any smooth washes on hot press it’s a whole different experience than cold or rough press. I’ve been painting in watercolor for a number of years but I just recents switched from “painting in the lines” like a coloring book to painting 3 large connected washes and boy is it a learning curve! I can’t seem to make a single painting like that without panicking and making a mess of my painting but I’m still practicing.
Thank-you. Look closely though. None of my washes in this piece are smooth. There are 'cauliflowers' everywhere, especially in the sky. IMO, the imperfections caused by flowing water is what give a watercolour piece its charm. When you try to 'fix' and 'control' things, you're asking for trouble.
@@linewashbirb1Thank you! I’m a bit of a perfectionist and it’s an important reminder for me to surrender to what the paint wants to do sometimes 😁
Amazing work! Your style is so captivating and unique,
Thank you! Cheers!
I like the way you draw and color
Thank you! Cheers!
you have a great, unique style! love it! <3<3<3
Thank you so much!!
I think you have a real gift for capturing the atmosphere in the outdoor pictures. Well done. Nice to see them all. Best wishes to you from Ireland.
Thank you so much! Best wishes to you too.
Do u paint from other people photos . Doesn’t it create copyright infringement
I do. I use copyright free photos under creative commons licenses or ask photographers directly for their permission.
Nice collection , how can one can make money with urban sketching?
Thankyou! One can try getting commissions, doing sketch reportage or teaching.
@@linewashbirb1 thanks but how is it possible without social media following ?
I love seeing what can be done in short amounts of time. I want to explore doing that myself. Excellent video as always 🤗😊🙏
Thankyou! Consistency and discipline trump talent and flamboyance, imo.
Bellissimo!!
Grazie!
Thank you for sharing your talent. From America, Arizona.
You're most welcome!
Liking your videos bro, have created a similar palette for myself, but missing a couple of tones, still. Budget constraints and what not. But all mijello single pigments
Nice! If you're from India, there are 2 new budget brands that have entered the market. Renesans and ShinHan.
Nice one..
Thank you! Cheers!
Ur really talented!
Just regular practice, my friend.
I liked the minimal thing you had going on there at 8:25. You could have stopped there but the end result is just as good. It's a very charming piece and I enjoyed the video.
Haha, I'll admit at that point I did consider the same. When one paints often there is always a next time.
Night scenes are almost a complete genre of watercolour to explore in itself. It is a rare topic. Please do some others, you are clearly good at it. This is beautiful and I wonder what it would be if it was not, as you said, a study.
I did attempt a bigger, full colour version. But it didn't go as smoothly as this one.
A night scene, different and nice. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
AWESOME
Thank you! Cheers!
Great demonstration of the pens range
Glad you found it useful.
Prussian blue is PB27. 🙂
Camlin refuses to reveal the pigment no. of their colours. Even if it is PB27, I can not confirm it.
@@linewashbirb1 Oh! I see! Sorry, I was not aware of that.
Thanks for the review, demonstration and advice 🙂.
Glad it was helpful!
👍
I’m really enjoying watching your process. I really appreciate you explaining why you do things too. Are you using hot press or cold press paper?
This isn't great paper tbh. Just some in-house brand my local shop stocks. The pack says cold-press, but it is a lot smoother than any other cold-press paper I've used.
Aw bless you, thank you for sharing when you pushed it too far. I think that is fascinating to watch, along with your evaluation.
Glad you enjoyed it. Overworking a piece is such a relatable experience, right? I've even seen master artists admit to it during demos.
@linewashbirb1 I also have a tendency to leave things looking unfinished, for fear of spoiling it, although I'm getting better at pushing through that stage
Good job! I too jump around, with darks and lights, not limiting myself to traditional watercolour methods.. I never have. Loving this channel. I sense a binge-watch coming on 😂.
Binge-watchers are most welcome! When sketching outdoors, experiencing a space trumps 'proper' technique. If I'm enjoying my morning, the sketch is inevitably a successful one.
Very good video. Nice picture too! I work in a sports shop and we're just about to start the cricket season here in the UK, you depict the equipment really well.
Thankyou! Its always cricket season here in Mumbai.
Love these, but the Navy Blue version works better for me. The default (relaxed position) line of this Green one is a bit too thick for me - I need to hold it too upright to get the narrow line I love. With the blue one I can still get as-wide-a-line-as-I-sometimes-want with a more horizontal position; but a relaxed grip gives me a nice crisp Fine.
I'm the opposite, I prefer thicker lines as my default. There are actually many more fude nib pens on the market, with a variety of sizes, prices and nib angles. I remember a well known Urbansketcher lending me her fancy, metal body fude pen, with a giant nib. Excellent for working on bigger sheets of paper.
I like how you demonstrated a variety of techniques while painting this. The wet-in-wet for the feathers and the lost & found edges on the head are good touches. Great piece, you did him justice!
Thank you very much!
Good job! You've got a really nice way of working, and such friendly, informative commentary 🙏😊
Nice sir
Excellent. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nicely done, you made the scene look cozy
Thank you very much!
Fun & informative - enjoyed watching your skills- thank you for sharing 🙏
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
What to do when the thin part of the nib when upside down is not working? The cartridge is almost f full though
Try dismantling the pen and soaking the nib in warm, soapy water. I clean the nib once every 40-50 days.
@@linewashbirb1 Thanks I'll try but my sailor is brand new and still with the first cartridge
@@pellier08 I have the same problem from the very first day I got this pen. I think it depends on how fast I draw upside down. When I draw slow, the ink keeps on flowing. Probably it also depends on the single item you get. It maybe also a matter of luck I guess.
@@elgatodiaz I've also noticed that when the cartridge is completely full it works better upside down. An that if I use the pen the right way long enough then I gets better upside down too.
Lovey!!
thankyou!
Hello from Canada. Thanks for sharing your process. Very pertinent subject matter. What type of brush are you using?
Thanks for the sub. I list all the materials I use in the video description.
Congrats on finishing a sketchbook, that’s always a good feeling. Some great pieces in there. I’m interested in seeing a collection of sketches from your locality one day. 👍
I submitted a piece about my neighbourhood sketchwalks to the Urban Sketchers website. It got published this week. I'll DM you.
That's great man! Very nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
What a sweet little bird. It feels like it flew out of a fairy tale and landed in our world. I like how you did the dry brush for the tail 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
I love white night's ultramarine blue out of all other brands, I find it very vibrant and enjoyable to paint with 🥰 I love the green too, it's fun and different to other greens you usually find in a palette. Love your mixed color! I love to mix purple out if these two pigments but you balanced the pigments so well it created such a beautiful purpilish black 🥰
White Nights Ultramarine or Ultramarine Deep? Its been a while since I used it. I wouldn't mind giving it a try again.
@@linewashbirb1 I only have the ultramarine and it's the one I love
O hate that you are supporting Russian made white nights. Have you any next best choices please?
If we begin boycotting stationery if the country of its origin has committed atrocities, we'd all end up having to hand-make our own stationery. As for alternatives, the brand easily accessible to you will likely have paints made using the same pigment numbers I mention.
Your shadow violet mix is fantastic! Looks super useful, too.
Congrats on your channel being over a year old! I enjoy these relaxing and helpful videos of yours.
