  • Street scenes are the most common subject one finds when UrbanSketching. In this video, I share my tips, tricks and experience on how to simplify a challenging scene, while maintaining a sense of depth, light and color.
I am a regular urban sketcher, actively involved with Urbansketchers Mumbai chapter. I love sketching outdoors using a line and wash watercolor technique. My technique relies upon identifying big shapes and gently building values.
Making these videos takes a lot of time and effort. If you'd like to show me some love and support, please consider buying me a coffee:

As far as anybody who might try to tell you that working from photographs is not "true" urban sketching goes, you'll find a lot of these self-appointed gatekeepers of the Craft saying things like this, but that's sheer nonsense. It's as valid as actually being on scene and who's to tell the difference in the finished work anyway?

I stay away from any nomenclature debates of what is a 'true' urban sketch. Everyone is free to enjoy what they enjoy. However, in my experience, I feel there is a noticeable difference in any scene I sketch in-situ as opposed to from a reference photo. These videos are my best attempt to replicate a in-situ sketch.
