  • I take a deep dive into using natural handmade watercolour by swatching and testing a set of Gida Living Colours. I compare these organic colours with commercial, artist grade paints. I test out both sets of colours by making 2 identical watercolour sketches.

Why do we all artists want to hoard art supplies even if we really dont need them? Yes..its good to experiment..but only if its relevant to me...at my stage im fully focussed on experimenting trying to improve my watercolour techniques rather than supplies. Maybe im speaking only for myself😅

different people like different things. I know blind consumerism isn't healthy but there's nothing wrong with treating yourself to a few new paints or a good paper once in a while to spice things up.
I worked for decades with a small Schmicke Watercolours set only adding a new single colour if an old one ran out or if I really needed it...knowing the brand well makes them easier to control....but having something new that behaves differently (because the binder is honey for example) and that's forcing you to try to adapt to the material is exciting.
And if you do buy something new it's nice to make an informed choice, so you don't buy stuff you don't need.
I only tried a little bit of handmade colours (Roman Szmal) but if it's in my budget I would like to try a few colours from small local creators in the future. not only to get some interesting paints but also because it's nice support local artisans and because I want to stop getting stuff shipped to me from other countries because of the environment.
