  • The standard approach when painting watercolors is that of working from light to dark. However, I take great joy in bending and challenging rules. I've seen a number of great artists not follow this order and get wonderful results. In this tutorial, I explore if I can do so too.
    I am a regular urban sketcher, actively involved with Urbansketchers Mumbai chapter. I love sketching outdoors using a line and wash watercolor technique. My technique relies upon identifying big shapes and gently building values.

    The materials I use in this demo are as follows:
    Paper: Fabriano Artistico Cold-Press Watercolor paper. 1/4th
    Paints: 18 assorted artist grade watercolours (White Nights, Daniel Smith, Mission Gold etc)
    Brushes: no.4, 8, 10, 12 round brushes, no.2 quill brush
    Pens: Sailor Fude fountain pen (Carbon Black ink), white glass pencil, white gel pen

    I liked the minimal thing you had going on there at 8:25. You could have stopped there but the end result is just as good. It's a very charming piece and I enjoyed the video.

      Haha, I'll admit at that point I did consider the same. When one paints often there is always a next time.
