  • After years of searching, I have finally discovered a new watercolor sketchbook that rivals even the best of the best. In this video I compare it to Etchr, Canson Montval, Hahnemuhle, Stillman & Birn, Canson XL, and more. How come no one is talking about this highly underrated sketchbook?
    Have you found a better watercolor sketchbook? Which one do you prefer? Let me know in the comments, I would love to hear from you!

    • @starr-starr
      @starr-starr Год назад +13

      @@morrisonwatercolors i use the sketch paper pretty much as you do, making notes on colors and mixes. I’m not great at sketching so i usually do my sketches digitally in Procreate because I can erase an infinite number of times or trace from a photo. I wish the sketch paper had a little more tooth, Id like to do some colored pencil stuff on it. I had the natural white for my first three, I’ve just started a bright white, and the colors really pop on it. You do know they have a 300 lb version too? I might go for that to practice some really wet washes, but most of my work is florals and the 140 lb is fine

    I found the Kilimanjaro after a long research. It is the best deal out there for 100% cotton. It is made in USA by cheap joes company. And the thing that many people don't know is that not all 100% watercolor paper behaves the same. Cheap joes also have a mix pack of watercolor paper for you to try. I buy them and make my own sketchbooks, but the Kilimanjaro is always the winner. The also have a Black Travel Watercolor with 25 sheets. I like supporting small companies like this instead of big companies like canton that produce really subpar products. You can get away with cheap paint and brushes but the not with paper. It took a while for me to realize that buying cheap paper and not getting any results. I hope this helps someone that is learning just like me. Thanks for putting this out there!

    So glad i came across this video today! I live about 30 minutes from one of Cheap Joe's 2 brick and morter stores. The one im nearest to is actually attached to their warehouse from which they conduct all of their online business, and its their "outlet" store. Its my favorite place to go and stock up on watercolor supplies! Im like many who continue using Arches paper because almost everything else i try has something about it i dont like. The only one ive actually liked as much as Arches is Saunders. Well, on my last trip to Cheap Joes Outlet a few weeks ago, i purchased my first Killamamjaro paper ever, and it happens to be this exact sketchbook! I havnt used it yet but now im overwhelmed with excitement to open it and get going! Btw...your colorwheel painting is awesome! What a beautiful and inspirational cover!

    I ran into your channel very recently. I used to take classes in college a "few" years ago, more like 58. Teachers thought I had lots of potential, family not so much. (Dad wanted lawyer.) I still have all kinds of supplies and equipment (great stuff, still usable). I finally decided to start over, which is why I was watching this video. Great info, but what impressed me the most was your actual studio area set up, which you show in passing. Could you post a video about it? I have a separate building in my property (former horseless carriage, even older than me), which I removated and would like to do something similar. I'm sure others would also benefit from seeing it in more detail, even if it's just part of some other video related to your art. It looks like a large kitchen counter, but I'm sure you also have an area for supplies. Thank you.

I will definitely consider posting a video on my studio area set up. I have modified it just slightly since posting this video, with better lighting. The arm bar clamp is portable so I can detach it and move it upstairs to my work station. I keep my art supplies in my basement. I like painting on the kitchen counter because I can move the chairs and stand and paint, or sit and paint. Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel! It was a surprise for me to find out that Kilimanjaro makes Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper. Yep. I ordered specifically Fabriano Artistico paper to make my own watercolor books and some of the paper inside the 5 sheet sleeve was watermarked Kilimanjaro. I bought it from a popular art supply company and had to mention it on Cheap Joe’s. It was true. There are only so many companies left that manufacture great quality paper. I made mixed hp and cp books that lay flat as well as my very large 16 x 10 Arches sketchbook. I just got tired of garbage so called watercolor sketchbooks. It is sad to see the number of paper mills either decreasing or switching parts like Arches and Cansón. I still use the newer Hahnemule books and they do fine as long as I’m not layering continually. I think the Hahnemuhle sketchbook with 100 percent cotton would be much better than the cellulose one I have used. Sounds like you are getting good results with it. Thank you for sharing!

    The worst experience for me is to love a paper that I can’t get. 😂 Checked the site and every Kilimanjaro is either back ordered or out of stock. Every. Single. One. Grr!

    I just happened to land on your channel and I love your style. This video was super interesting, sadly it looks like the Kilimanjaro isn't available in Europe.

    I have been making my own sketchbooks with Saunders Waterford paper. I also buy pads of arches and Saunders Waterford and take them to my local office shop and have then spiral bound. I have tried many commercial made ones and am not satisfied with any of them. The etcher ones are out of my price range.

      DIY sketchbooks are the best! That is a great idea to take the paper to a local office shop for binding. I agree that most commercial sketchbooks just don't cut it. And Etchr is very expensive. Thanks for posting!
