    I just talked to the rep and they confirmed the cover is fake leather. It literally feels like plastic so I'm not surprised. I told them they should update their product page because a lot of people don't want leather.

      I also started buying Paul Rubens Blocks at the same time (mainly because all professional grade art supplies are mega expensive wher I live) and I am so impressed with the quality of the paper. I had not bought blocks before -This is the cheapest option for me-and it took me a while to get used to separating all the gummed pages but I love it now.

    It's pretty hard to pay attention to the products when you're taking two or three swipes with a brush to make amazing paintings appear that don't just convey landforms and vegetation but also light and movement and mood on just a scrap-size bit of paper space. I get a little woozy and giggly at the wonder of it all.

  • @fangchick93

    I got a small version of this sketchbook for free when I got my Paul Ruben watercolour palette a year ago. I was very much a beginner then, and even I could appreciate the quality of that paper. I prefer a more impressionistic style of painting and this paper is perfect for that. I'm ordering the bigger version tomorrow since my little one is almost full. I would recommend this sketchbook to anyone. My only gripe is that I don't know what sizing they use for the paper. It acts a lot like the Strathmore 500 hot press watercolour paper, so I think it may be vegan but I'm not positive.

    I never tried 100% cotton hot press. But the shimmer/glitter paper is interesting. I don't think it'and s distracting but definitely not for every day painting. I liked the look of the coast painting you did on this paper. The shimmer effect makes this special. I think this will look good if someone loves to paint water, too.

    Thank you! Hot press is my go-to paper. I started out on the drafting and graphics side in the early days and it actually took me some time to adjust to the texture of cold press when I took up watercolor "for real" a couple of years ago. And that sparkly paper?! Who knew?! I just ordered a pack on special through Amazon to try it out. I have a couple of gift ideas for the upcoming holiday where it might work out well. I am always willing to give a new product a try. I have been using Paul Rubens watercolors for about a year now and they are very solid. I would rank them in Tier 2 after my go-to Roman Szmal, M Graham, Daniel Smith, and Mijelo Mission Gold.

    Hi, I’ve used this pad often, once that same indentation happened. If you don’t want to remove it,i have done this in the book. Spritz lightly the area with water both sides and with a brush gently wet the indentation. Let dry with wax paper underneath. It came out nice and even. It is easier if you take the page out and let it dry under pressure.

    The sparkle paper might be fun if you paint your own Christmas cards. Someone on Amazon was saying that watercolor paints don’t granulate on this paper. Another complained about the paper tearing when trying to remove masking fluid. I do love good granulation, so would be curious to know about that. All in all it seems like a very affordable sketchbook. I will give it a try. It is $14.99 on Amazon in the US for this size, (the size you tested) and there is also a smaller size.

      Hello! The glittery paper she was sent is the hot press paper. They come coded in colores enveloves. The lilac is hot press, there is a peach envelope which is cold press medium grain and an orange envelope which is the cold press rough texture. I have not personally tried it with masking fluid myself but I have masked a little with painter's tape and the hot press didn't tear at all.

    I actually just placed an order after hearing about this. I was never a sketchbook person and never was interested, but after seeing so many other artists and especially today after seeing you, I thought maybe I need to try this. I am such a perfectionist and such a final piece type of person, and I'm coming from 15 years of digital art, so everything I do is plagued by perfectionism especially with digital art because of the zooming in features, the undo buttons and all the millions of possibilities, it takes me forever to finish anything digitally and as I get older my body can't tolerate sitting at a computer anymore. Sitting at a desk with regular paper I can do though because I'm looking downwards as opposed to upwards at a monitor - I know it probably sounds really weird, it's because I've been sitting in my bed on my computer cross legged for 10+ years and I end up sitting cross legged in my chair and fidgeting so much when on the computer, I can't have my feet down for some reason...plus digital art is just so tedious and not fun at all for me anyway. But anyway! plus I just loooove traditional art SO much, it's so much faster for me and loosens me up a lot more. I'm hoping I can just play around and let loose with this sketchbook, your videos are so inspiring I just love the atmosphere of everything!

      Oh noo I typed a huge answer to this and somehow lost it... :(

      @dreamrabbits5072 2 года назад

      @@SarahBurnsStudio Oh no worries!! I agree and I was thinking of ways to not have to sit on a chair, I am much more comfortable cross legged for some reason. I've been watching more of your videos and the more I learn about your struggles the more I relate! Like you said a couple of times you have a bad back! Ah, so do I! It's my fault though for being a potato for 15 years, when I was a teenager I could do anything, but now I literally feel like an old lady and I'm only 33 hah.
      I might end up clearing some floor space in my room and sit on the floor to do some drawing studies and things like that, I even purchased a huge masonite drawing board a while ago because I had a future intention of working on the floor... my bed has been abused already from me sitting in 1 spot and sinking it. Can you believe I just bought this brand new mattress back in July and it's already sagging!!! It's horrible for my back and the return window is over, I'm not sure what to do about it, it's a pillowtop so there's no flipping it, grr...I wish I had just got a normal firm mattress instead. Ahh the struggles of being a potato!

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  2 года назад

      @@dreamrabbits5072 I love big drawing boards! I use them a lot, and I have a little desktop easel so I can prop it up if needed.
      Regarding your mattress we have a really crappy one but I bought a 4” memory foam topper and it has saved my body from nightly torture. It is much cheaper than getting a new mattress. I got mine online and came rolled up, it is super heavy so maybe ask them to put it in the room and open it. Let it inflate and air out for several hours before use too because they kinda smell bad at first (like chemicals)

    Sarah (if I may) I like your videos and work. Just subbed. I am Clint and live in Atlanta, Georgia. I have been drawing for 40 years and played with water color years ago. For about 6 years I have concentrated on digital illustrating using my laptop and Wacom tablet. Some call it digital "painting' but I am an older guy (63) and have trouble calling it painting. I feel like I ought to have paint to call it painting. Discovered you on RUclips when I recently I picked up some colored pencils with the intention to do some drawings while hiking in the southern Appalachians. Been camping and hiking from the age of 10 but never combined hiking and drawing. You have been very inspiring. Thanks Clint.

    Hello there Mrs.Burns: I just received the Paul Rubens Watercolor book as featured. I was curious about it and consequently found you. Happy accident. I use the same mixed media materials you mentioned in video. I also love markers too and would love to see a tutorial on them and those you recommend. I currently have gone down a rabbit hole with Technical Pens. Ranging from some made in the 40's & 50's to modern-day. However, they are quickly not being produced by many large popular Manufactures. So sad. I've stuck piled many types & brands. And all sizes from ISO .13, .18, .25, .35, .50, .70, 1.00, 1.40, 2.00- to everything from .13 to 2.00. I was curious to note you said you had the Rotring .40 and that was your personal smallest size. I found some amazing things & techniques you can accomplish with .13/.18 sizes and particularly with .2mm. I love your style and and found your comments to be true regarding Paul Rubens book. You're indeed doing a fantastic job on RUclips! Thank you for contributing. P.S.- I'd be happy to send you a .13 size pen for you to play with. And how to easily maintain the smaller size as this is the reining comment about using them vs. fiber-tip pens. They have there place, but I've found being able to use high quality ink with refillable technical pens is worth the effort. Thanks so much. Gene in SW Florida.

    I like the sketchbook but quality control is lacking. Mine came without the elastic band to keep it closed & bindings could be better. Aside from that, it’s a pretty good little fun book & colors look great.
    I prefer hot pressed cotton sketchbooks. Sketchbooks aren’t for sogging, they’re for sketching on the go and adding a bit of watercolor. Good for not killing your pen tips … so you can sketch using different mediums.
    It’s a good & versatile sketchbook with great paper.

    Thanks for the review! Always love to hear your thoughts :) I was definitely interested in checking them out, but upon looking at other Amazon reviews, it seems the creases in the pages due to the ribbon is a common problem, along with other crease damage in their books. That's really disappointing. I hope they fix that, that's a big quality control problem. I'll keep an eye on them though, but probably still stick to other papers in the meantime.

    It looks pretty cool. Sparkles. Hmmm… yeah. I like it. 👍. I saw on their site, that they are making a “ cold pressed” pad now. Would love to see if the pattern on it , is mechanically stamped looking. I’m picky about that. I feel a home made Arches sketchbook coming soon in my house. And…lol… it’s hard to get the same pattern front and back of pages in a lot of these journals. Thx for your review. I need to try the hot pressed. I have a PR block. 😏

    Thank you for the video! I have tried some of the Paul Rubens watercolor and paper and have been super happy with them. Their "phosphorescent" (glitter) paint is actually one of my favorites to paint with. It's a bit like the paper, it looks like a regular painting until you move it around. I think it could be fun to do a night sky or galaxy painting on the glittery paper.
    I came to your channel for watercolor content and have stayed for your talent and personality! Thank you so much for doing what you do, I always leave your videos inspired to get out and paint. Having said that, I would be interested in seeing a video on the alcohol markers. I have a few laying about, and haven't really figured out how I want to use them. My background is mostly in realistic pencil drawing where everything is very slow going and precise... Watercolor was terrifying when I started because there's no eraser lol. I think that's the issue I'm having with markers. Thank you again and keep on keeping on, you are wonderful!

I just try to avoid using leather and any animal hair in brushes and so on, but if they ever come out with a synthetic leather, I'll be first in line to grab one of these! The paper and the sizes are perfect for what I need.

  • @michemman
    @michemman 2 года назад

    Dear Sarah,
    I love the texture of Etchr sketch book paper too, and it is different to my other Fabriano Artistico papers as a full sheet, and different again to their pads. (3 different Fabriano papers).
    I haven't tried the next one up which I think is called the "Perfect sketch book by Etchr", but Jane Blundell asked me if I have tried it, and she loves it!
    I often worry about change and companies stopping good products so I bought about 6 A4 Etchr's in landscape orientation. I recommend this size, as when it is open you can do really long panoramas, across the middle stitching.
    Next time though, I will keep one just for swatching, and one other for sketching, as the swatches are so bright, and large and kind of annoying in amongst fine detailed sketches of say cherry blossoms, and landscapes.
    When people see my sketchbook, it kind of started with general themes, and the swatching in A4, kind of overpowers the whole experience. I am nearly at the end of the first Etchr one, and I think I will move all the swatches to book # 2, or at least tape over the pages.
    I love swatching though, so I love to see it done in real time over a few hours, so "no need to speed that section of your video" for me!
    The Paul Rubens paper looks really nice. I think it could be just a gouache sketch book for me?
    I wonder if they do a cold press?
    Not sure about hot press, I suppose I have had some horrible experiences eg Fabriano studio hot press and me, we don't like each other, the pigment stayed proud as beads and didn't soak in, so I have to totally change my style for that.
    It is good for other more stranger techniques like scratching the paper, and another technique where you paint a long thin bead of water only, and then while it is still proud of the paper, dropping in two colours in the one long high bead, so that looks really cool, like "how was that done?"
    It is a 50/50 I think and really too smooth, almost water repellant? It spoilt my idea of what hot press could do, just from buying a pad. Luckily it wasn't the first Fabriano I tried.
    I do know a lot of botanicals are done on the Fabriano Artistico, as their preferred choice.
    The good thing about full sheets, are they are cost effective as they have sales where 5 full sheets come in a box. Cut it down to size, and add it to one piece of thick, stiff box board, taped with painter's or washi tape, and you have a very light weight surface for plein air.
    Jane Blundell is a friend and mentor here in Sydney, and she encourages trying all sorts of paper, she used the large sheet for her next colour triads book, and she said it was a bit harder to lift on it, but I don't lift very often, if at all.
    Tip: Knowing you love rocks, you could use a straight crimson colour in the water as it looks like rocks under the shallow sea water! Even if you have to mix a browny dark cool red, it makes coastal scenes pop. Sometimes here in Australia there are definite purple colours in the water where the rocks have fallen into the water, or where one rock goes from exposed, to being under the water....
    I watched some of your videos recently, from a bit over a year ago or maybe 2 years? wow such improvement in your plein air!
    (Thanks to your encouraging way on your videos, and your sense of humour, I have been trying to do more plein air, to get much better at it. I went down a rabbit hole with the Etchr slate that you reviewed, looked at other watercolour plein air products, like the Stablo is a French design', and now have developed my own lightweight plein air kit, in testing phase, cheaper, and within 2 days of seeing your video, I have found some success in design that I am super excited about.)
    I have been recently only doing 90 mins in the Royal Botanical Gardens, taking a few photos, then coming home to finish off in the studio.....
    I was pleased with one of our central city scapes, with the gardens in front of it.
    The garden is on the Opera house side, and goes around the harbour edge with a rock wall, and is quite large with huge trees, both big and wide, and goes all the way over to what we call Mrs Macquaries Chair, and to the Domain, the Art gallery under construction, and down to the port of Woolloomooloo, from one section of the Park, we can see a full view of the Opera House and Harbour bridge. At the moment pretty much empty of guests so it is lovely and quiet.
    Have fun! Enjoy your late Autumn in Scotland.
    In kindred spirit,
    Eliza
