I didn't know i could get 100% cotton sketchbooks for that reasonable price. I just never looked for them assuming they would be expensive. Thank you for sharing
In US I’ve used Bee Paper 100% cotton wire bound sketchbooks, various sizes. Price is very reasonable and I think it takes watercolor pretty well. Not designed to use for finished paintings. A friend of mine doesn’t like them, but I still do. Personal choice-and budget!
you are a life saver. I have so many problems finding watercolor sketchbook with paper I actually like and I'm at that desperation point where price is not an issue, I just want a sketchbook I like. and several of those looked exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you!
I love the khadi books, it would not surprise me if they stood the test of time better than the more refined looking books. The paper is so non threatening to work with, and dries down so flat that it is really worth trying, the only downside is I can never find exactly what I want, size wise, when I want it! I think I would be very intimidated by those lovely leather covered books!
Thanks for this review on beautiful sketchbooks. I love the khadi sketchbooks and they are easy to find where I live. When I want a sketchbook with very white paper I use the stillman and birn alpha series. Love the way color pops and granulates. Know this is older video but so glad you found some lovely options for yourself. Thanks for sharing with us.💕
"This is the sound of 300GSM paper....." aaaah Teoh I've missed your videos so much - they just keep getting better and better!! Thanks for the tactile experience through visual and auditory media! :D
"The sound of 300 gsm paper" 🤣I really do love this review because I've been trying to find good watercolor sketchbooks where I can paint on the front and backside without warping issues. But most of them are super expensive :( Edit: I just purchased the Etchr Lab's bundle: three 200 gsm, cold pressed, 100% cotton, each 54 pgs watercolor sketchbooks. You get THREE high quality ones, and they're handmade for a total of ~$90 USD (depending on shipping). I'm in! This should last me for quite a while since it takes me a year to finish a 60 page sketchbook. They won't come until July, but I cannot wait o-o
Although it’s wire bound, I just got a RKB Fatpad with Saunders Waterford paper from Jackson’s art- 19x28 cm with 25sheets. The shipping was very minimal and I think the sketchbook was around $24. I’ve used this paper before and really enjoyed it. I’m excited to try and keep a sketchbook- I usually use single sheets.
Since you made me know the sketchbook Khadipaper, I do not get tired. I finish my 4th, I tried the 2 types of paper rough and smooth and the value for money is excellent ! I may try one day the first Koval, which I do not know, others seem to me too expensive for ... my talent 😂 Thank you for this video Teoh ! 👍🏻
I really love sketchbooks but for pencil and ink. These are great options for us wet media artists. I usually stick to various sizes of watercolor blocks from Blick's since they're easy to find here in California and are 100% cotton. Thank you for another great video, Teoh
Oddly I can find 100% cotton strathmore visual journals at one of my local grocery stores, but it’s spiral bound... not my favorite by any means. Does the trick for quick sketches, and I’m excited to try out the koval and Etchr ones soon! 😍
Oh man those Koval sketchbooks are really enticing with the artistico paper! I went and backed the etchr books since they come as a 3 sketchbook bundle. Hopefully they’re as good as the arches brand blocks I currently use. Thanks for the suggestions!
Peggy Boyd Guess it may be similar to the Pepsi vs Coke situation, not sure one is “better”, but in my experience Arches is worth the extra money. Seems to handle inks better, stays flatter, and “feels” nice (both tooth and weight). Again, just my opinion.
@@Carrot-3H Arches is great, but Fabriano is easier to handle when you make and bind your own sketchbooks. Arches tends to 'crack' when folded. Generally Fabriano Artistico is the 'go-to' paper for 100% cotton sketchbooks, but I have logged the other brands and weights Teoh mentioned for experimentation. (But I still buy the Khadi sketchbooks because of their 'bang for buck'.)
You did it again! Interested in a product (Etchr kickstarter campaign) and just hours previously (while I was sleeping in fact) you’ve published a “review”. Great work!
Thank you so much for this video. It’s exactly what I was looking for. And you're not just a good artist, you’re a really nice man. I’m going to order a book like yours from the SPD.
i get so excited for your videos :) you have such unique and thoughtful content that keeps us coming back and i also love the way you talk lol thank you for staying true to teoh and creating videos that artists are genuinely interested in with all the details and questions we have in mind
I really like your customized sketchbooks. Too bad I don't live in Singapore. If I was, I'd definitely have my own sketchbook customized! I have used a Khadi sketchbook and initially, I bought it because of it's unique appearance. I loved it's deckle edge pages and the paper itself is fantastic for floral paintings. I haven't heard of the Koval brand before, but the quality seems top-notch! I'd definitely get one for myself if I get the chance.
I just bought the regular CP Etchr bundle of three sizes...pretty impressive! So happy to finally have found watercolor journals that I like. You wouldn’t believe the stack of fails I have. I’d like to eventually try their hot press and the Perfect version. I’d also like to try the Koval.
Winsor and Newton has a 100% cotton sketchbook in the 5x7 (inches) size but don’t confuse it with another larger one they sell with less percentage of cotton. All of my watercolor work in this sketchbook came out the very best. It is 300 grams (140lb) too. Thank you.
Great video as always, super useful. Love your product review /showcase videos. Never heard of Koval, so thanks for the intro. Looking forward to the Etchr line up, they're making plenty of different options at price ranges, sizes and hp/cp.
Inspired by your video, I checked on Etsy too, for 100% cotton watercolor paper sketch books -- there are two or three sellers there selling rustic style leather-bound sketchbooks with Fabriano Artistico, and it's also nice to support the handmade community when you can :-)
Hi Teoh, I did back Etchr, but have also bought Kilimanjaro 100% cotton from Cheap Joes, which offers this paper in a sketch book. Thanks for the video. had no idea there were that many sketch books with 100% cotton.
a guide on what could be done to cobble together our own ghetto sketchbook would be interesting. there are book making kits on ebay I think, but i dont know if theyre at all suitable for something like this.
I was extremely fortunate to find the Strathmore cotton travel journal and pads on clearance at Walmart. I bought 16 journals (5x8), 9 (8x10) pads and 8 (3x9) pads (all they had). Super cheap, good quality. I should have bought more 🙂. I know I'll never find a deal like that again.
Their sketchbooks are good. Whenever I want to use a sketchbook for "serious" work, I go with SPD, actually I go with the customised sketchbooks I get them to make.
Khadi paper from India, my vote. I use it, and paint Aquarell on 300 g of coton, is really impressive.. Why vote for this? Price.. If you compare samé number of pages, samé size, Kahdi is much cheaper! Yes, Fabriano, Archer, etc. make nice sketchbooks, but I do not want to pay extra money for nice cover or rubber band (I can use mine 😊), and saved money, buy extra Kahdi sketchbook, or they produce also papers, or sketchbook of sizes A4, A3... Recommend..
Thank you for info..I didn't know about Koval, and it's in a neighboring country. Maybe it would be good for beginners to explain what is the difference between cold press and hot press, and what is the difference between 100% cotton and 50% cotton paper? Because everything you said can be read in the description of the sketchbook. But, what is important for a beginner is the texture, why cold press, why hot press..etc..As far as I know Ian Fennelly uses 50 % cotton Fabriano paper..smooth, I think?
