  • In this video, I share my approach to line and wash, watercolour sketching. I am a regular urban sketcher, actively involved with Urbansketchers Mumbai chapter. This is the same approach I use when I am outdoors with my sketchbook and paints. It relies heavily upon identifying and defining values. Using this approach, I give my sketches a sense of light and volume, one layer at a time.
I upload full-length watercolour tutorials on Skillshare. Use this link to access one of my classes free of charge:

The materials I use in this demo are as follows:
Paper: Strathmore Mixed Media Visual Journal. 9 x 12
    Paints: Assorted artist grade watercolours
Brushes: 4, 8, 12 round, Escoda Versatil, local flat brush
Pens: 0.3 Sakura Fineliner, 1.0 Uniball gel pen

You did an excellent job of simplifying this scene while still keeping it vibrant and interesting!

Your contrast is beautiful, with having lots of action in the scene. Lovely.

New to your stuff and loving it!
The economic under drawing and composition are skillful rendered....do you edit your own references and sketch free hand or take another approach? Tracing? Grid'ing?
The washes are bright and colourful = no mud!
And there's just enough pen to finesse the detials and give my eye a sophisticated path through the picture.
    Thank you!

Glad you're enjoying these and glad to have you onboard.
For these videos, I edit (i.e crop) my references and sketch freehand. That said, line and wash is a method I usually reserve for sketching plein air.
