Barnes to Mortlake ¦ Love Your London ¦ (3/3) ¦ Barnes Bridge, Mortlake, Sir Richard Burton
Tristán White and Sharon Crawford finish their journey from Barnes to Mortlake, starting off at Barnes Bridge railway station, and walking towards Mortlake. They visit Ye White Hart (recently rebranded as just "White Hart"), pass by Rick Stein's restaurant, and John Dee's garden. They talk about the Mortlake Tapestries, as well as the pottery industry (Sanders and, especially, Kinshere). Then it's time to visit the two St Mary churches: the Anglican church dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, Mortlake, and the Roman Catholic church dedicated to St Mary Magadalen, where there is a mausoleum for the intrepid explorer Sir Richard Burton who, alongside John Hanning Speke, searched for the source ...

    Watney's beers were certainly not held in high regard by ale drinkers, including the staff at the brewery, during the 1960s-80s. The Tapestry was originally a Watneys pub called The Jolly Milkman but The Jolly Gardeners opposite was actually the nearest pub to the brewery by a few yards and belonged to arch competitors Young & Co from the Ram Brewery in nearby Wandsworth. On their lunch breaks, the Watneys workers preferred to congregate at The Jolly Gardeners to drink superior Young's ales rather their employer's insipid offerings in The Jolly Milkman across the road! No doubt that didn't go down well with the brewery owners who by the 1970s was the Grand Metropolitan conglomerate. Coors bought the brewery and so for its final few decades produced even more insipid US style lager.

    The old Barnes Victorian 'nick' at 48'56" was my late fathers first posting when he joined the Met Police in March 1950. I took him back to see Barnes in a wheelchair around 3 years before he died (2015ish) and took his photo in front of it when it was already posh flats. He used to tell me loads of tales from his days in uniform at Barnes - VB (in V division). The Bulls Head Jazz room used to be in what is now the 'Bolan Room' right behind the bar. It was relocated maybe 5-6 years ago. I've seen blues legend Jimmy Witherspoon there 50 years ago along with others such as Charlie Watts in a small jazz trio, also Zoot Money and many others. Humphrey Littleton was a regular along with George Melly. Sadly not as nice a pub as it used to be IMHO

    I was shocked when you mentioned Barnardo's sent children to Australia, yet did not mention the over 30,000 children they sent to Canada between the mid 1870's and 1939 - with even a few more beng sent much later! They ranged from infancy to 18 years of age with the purpose of being indentured farm labourers and domestic servants-many as early as age 4. Barnardo's had receiving homes set up in Toronto, and Peterborough Ontario, and Winnipeg and Russell Manitoba (an industrial farm). From there, the children were sent to work for "host families - mainly farmers. We often have to remind people of the spelling of Barnardo's. We remind them it is spelled Barn, and the way to remember is that many children slept and ate in the barns - sometimes even eating the same food as the pigs or whatever was left over from the dog's food! Australia received only about 7000 children in total from Barnardo's and another major organization and their experiences are just as horrific as those who were sent to Canada. On the other hand,there were over 50 organizations and individuals given financial and social support to send children to Canada (from religous and social groups, patrons, donations and 5 governments). Dr.Barnardo was charged twice (and found guilty the first time), with what he called "philanthropic kidnapping"...believeing some children were better off being removed, even forcibly, from what he considered to be unfit or immoral parents and conditions in which a child should be living. A usual comment from most of the over 100,000 children sent to Canada, under a child migration scheme that ran from 1869 to 1948, is that they were ashamed to be a home boy or girl, and especially a Barnardo girl or Barnardo girl because of the negativity surrounding them. The appalling stories of abuse, neglect and total disregard we have from these children whom we call Canada's British Home Children, are difficult to hear, and utterly tragic! In fact, we have a few research groups and genealogical sites dedicated to increasing awareness of all of these children sent to Canada.In 2016, I visited Barkingside, where my grandmother was placed before coming to Canada. I thought it such a beautiful area now, but even more so from viewing very early photos. Unfortunately, her cottage, Daisy, had been demolished a number of years ago. Anyway, just thought you might be interested in knowing some essential Barnardo history. What we today call "errors" made in the past were standard practices and perceptions at the time...and, although Barnardo's changed their focus, the actual child migration scheme in which they were the largest player, did not actually end until 1972.

    Your history content is great :) especially as mainstream tv seems to regurgitate the same old topics, where as you are bringing lesser known subjects to light. I had barely heard of Richard Burton (apart from the actor) and I had forgotten about the word Ye not being said as Ye. These are delicious nuggets of knowledge that I am glad I now know. I'm not interested in seeing inside the pubs though as one pub looks much the same as any other to me, and they are only interested in themselves.

    Just to correct you as some one who was born in Becontree ... it has always been pronounced BEEcontree !! only new people to the area pronounce it Beckontree and never ever in the history of Becontree has it ever been pronounced Bickontree. Anyone born or schooled here pre 1990's is insulted when anyone pronounces Beckontree!!!!

    • @LoveYourLondon
      @LoveYourLondon Месяц назад

    • @colinnewman1962
      @colinnewman1962 Месяц назад

      I pronounce it Beckontree and I'm not new to the area. From Wikipedia: "The dialectologist Peter Wright wrote in 1981 that /ˈbiːkəntriː/ is the traditional pronunciation in the cockney dialect (Wright, Peter (1981). Cockney Dialect and Slang. London: B.T. Batsford Ltd. p. 75.). This fits in with the idea that the "Bee" pronunciation came in with the Londoners who moved in when the Becontree Estate was built. I can see why "Beacontree" would be pronounced with the long e, but it makes no sense for "Becontree".

    • @zaneymarie1531
      @zaneymarie1531 Месяц назад

      @colinnewman1962 .. 1981?? I was born in 1965, lived in Rowney Gardens, Becontree, went to Maysebrook School. From my very first memory, late 60s no local in the area ever pronounced it bekontree.

    • @colinnewman1962
      @colinnewman1962 Месяц назад

      @@zaneymarie1531 Depends what you mean by "no-one" and "area". My limited research supports the idea that the long e pronunciation was brought in by East Londoners moving into the LCC estate when it was built. I don't know if that's your heritage, but if it is it would explain your long e pronunciation. For the most part, Barking people who have responded pronounce it with the short e, and I had one citation relating to a Dagenham (not Becontree) woman from c 100 years ago who used the short e pronunciation. So everything fits with the long e being an import. People born in Becontree in the 1940s, 50s, 60s may well be descendants of those incomers from c 1920 and later, so we would expect them to share a common pronunciation.
