  • eBay link: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/144777180609 Tristán White and Sharon Crawford end their journey around Balham by checking out the area around Clapham South station (SW4), with its deep-level air raid shelter used to protect Londoners during the Blitz and temporarily rehouse the new arrivals on the Windrush. This is also the old stomping ground of The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde who would teach Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols how to play guitar on the grass outside Clapham Mansions. They explain how she almost married Sid Vicious, and visit the building where the Pistols' manager Malcolm McLaren lived with Vivienne Westwood (Thurleigh Court, SW12, on Nightingale Lane). They visit two blue plaques (H M Bateman and Gus Elen), as well as Broomwood Hall Upper School with its very strange wall, followed by a pint or two in The Nightingale. Then it's back to the old Stane Street Roman Road aka the A24 (Balham Hill, SW12) where they try a Georgian cheese bread known as a khachapuri at The Georgian, talk about Westbury Court, check out the home of the old Odeon cinema, and make their way down towards the Balham Mandir, set up by Her Holiness Maa Shyama Devi for the Gujarati community. We speak about various Indian gods, and then end up opposite Du Cane Court again (SW17) (where we were in ep 1), where we appeal again for people to buy Sharon's artwork to raise money for Ukraine. We speak to Bertie Osgood who lets us take a look around the warehouse of One Little Independent Records (formerly One Little Indian), most famous for being the label of Björk, Crass and Alabama 3. We finish off with some pole dancing lessons courtesy of the Pole Studio (Balham).

That was very interesting and informative! For your Clapham series, you'll find another famous Victorian music hall star with a connection to the area: Dan Leno, whose house now forms part of La Retraite School, Atkins Road, Clapham Park. They say his pet donkey used to graze on what may still be the school's hockey field!

I so enjoyed this episode. Great to remind us of an event children enjoyed every year. What about considering a competition next year for the best Guy? I loved the other people who spoke on the video and as for the children, they were definitely the stars of the episode. what about asking the children what they would like to do next? So good to see parents spending time with their children outside in fresh air.

Thank you, and apologies for the delay in replying. We possibly will revisit the topic next year, so watch this space.

Really enjoyed this episode. We lived in the flat directly above Mrs Westwood and could have told you lots of interesting stories about her, like the bonfire parties with the super models and the time she lost a prototype conical bra…

That must have been amazing! Did she ever find the bra? Or did it end up on the bonfire? haha

My pole-dancing days are over. :-) But I was amazed I could lift all 114kg of me off the ground with minimal effort, thanks to the technique Sam showed me. If I were 30 or 40 kilos lighter imagine what I could have done!
