  • In this episode, Tristán White and Sharon Crawford visit Eastbury Manor House in Upney, and get a full guided tour. A failed attempt to eat gizzards at The Thatched House pub is followed by a distressing visit to Rippleside Cemetery. After stopping by Upney station and Barking Community Hospital, we cross Mayes Brook to enter Mayesbrook Park, where geese, chainsaw art and the Mayesbrook Park await us. We wonder how the park got the nickname, "Matchstick Island". We try to visit the Dagenham Roundhouse, and talk about Billy Bragg; then it's off to Barking FC, a historic football club which had a truly magnificent player in the early 20th century: Jack Leslie, disgracefully snubbed by the English FA because of his colour. Oh, and we talk about Glenn Tamplin as well. We talk about the many musicians who have received their education at Barking Abbey School, plus we visit the home of Dame Vera Lynn. After that, it's off to Barking Park, where we visit the war memorial, the miniature Barking Park Light Railway, and the Magical Unicorn Lake pedaloes.

My dad used to play guitar and sing in the roundhouse, we lived in the flats across the road. And in 1999 I had a head on collision car accident right where you are standing on the roundabout outside the pub. I lost my grandad that day 😢 so when I see this roundabout I can't help but remember that day xx even though this happened the area gives me comfort i grew up here and it will always feel like home. Nice to see you guys here ❤

Barking Abbey School was formed into a comprehensive in 1970 with the joining of Park Modern and Barking Abbey Grammar school.
My grandparents knew Vera Lynn parents and socialised with them.
I remember the gardens in Mayesbrook park

Thank you! Yes, it was very hard to work out which of the two schools the people I mentioned went to, as they were listed as "Barking Abbey School" even though that was not the name of it, necessarily, when they attended (Billy Bragg was born in 1957). As for the gardens, such a shame the Council just filled them in instead of actively trying to stop the vandalism. Surely that was too drastic a solution. Perhaps having some kind of fencing so that it was only accessible during daylight hours would have been cheaper and allowed the non-vandals to enjoy it during the daytime!
