  • In today's special, Tristán White and Sharon Crawford visit the foreshore of the River Thames to tell you all about mudlarking, what it is, and the very strict rules and regulations you must follow if you decide to become one. They also attend a special day for mudlarking at Southwark Cathedral, where they get to talk to Lara Maiklem (whose book on the topic is amazing), as well as other mudlarks such as Jaime Rory Lucy, and Pippa from the Port of London Authority. They then try out making a clay tile replica (with the assistance of Raewyn Harrison) of something that archaeologist Mike Webber found, and then look at some replicas of pilgrim badges.
Right now, at the time of releasing this video, it is not possible to register as a new mudlark, but this will doubtlessly change soon, so keep a look out on the Port of London Authority's website. All links are below.

Interesting little foray into the world of Mudlarking I would like to see a statistical analysis of who permits are being issued to geographically.. I would also like to see the figures on how many Mudlarks (with permits) have online shops (Etsy) for example .or ebay. Isn't it also true to say that there are organised mudlarking trips that you as a tourist can enjoy . How long is the pause likely to last and along with the pause , will there be an evaluation of P.L.A policy on permits . ? The regulation and administration is the responsibility of the port of London . The ethics are a matter for the mudlarking community and the individual mudlark.

I can answer the last point: the PLA have said the pause is indefinite while they assess any damage being caused by having too many people digging around there. But of course, it will return, as it is ultimately a source of revenue for them. I don't think it's possible to know how many mudlarks have a presence on eBay/etsy especially as very rarely as these online shops in the name of the actual person. However, I would have thought it would be very few indeed, as those who register as mudlarks are well aware that they are strictly forbidden from selling. The ones on eBay and etsy are probably the ones who are *not* registered mudlarks. Your other question about who permits are being issued to geographically would probably require a Freedom of Information request to the PLA.

Such as shame, I was looking forward to this but I fear you missed an an opportunity to ask some really interesting questions to the mudlarkers instead of only ever focussing on your bugbear about costs of 1 year licence and the law about whether you can or cannot pick something up. You managed to pretty much annoy everyone you interviewed by focussing on your obsession and spent most of the video asking this over and over to prove a point. Sorry disappointed with the outcome from what was am amazing subject matter to pick up. Clearly you had gone into great effort and there were lots of interesting parts.

Thanks for the feedback. Agreed, we went on a bit too much regarding the cost of the 1-day licence (£42) though in the end the PLA confirmed that it is now one month (which makes it much better). As for not being sure what to do when you see something, I did get an answer in the end. I found it really interesting that mudlarks often throw their finds back in, the first interview with Jaime was particularly enlightening. But all feedback gratefully received, thank you.
