Hessle Road (Hull UK) - The Community In Pictures (1930's - 1960's)

- I was given this on a disc "as is". There's no mention of who created it as you can see, therefore I thought it would be good to share it on here. I edited it with the beginning title and ending.
I did spend a lot of time down Hessle Road in my youth (1970's & early 80's) as my mate Bernard lived down South Boulevard. The little kids found entertainment in derelict buildings, railway lines, docks, factory roofs, yet no-one was killed or seriously injured. Yet nowadays, with everything being Health and Saftey, I expect to see kids wearing hi-viz jackets, crash helmets, saftey boots and glasses, just to go on a swing at the park..........I'm buying shares in cotton wool......it's the future !!
There are some streets in the slideshow I've never heard of, perhaps after the war, they were simply "levelled".
All in all, the photos are a fascinating insight of what life was like in the old days.

I was born into a 2 up/2 down on Flinton Grove, a terrace off Flinton Street in 1976. I hold a lot of my childhood from there till it was all levelled, moving on through Hawthorne Ave for a year, onto Bilton Grange, and then around the Uni area. I've lived in northern Europe for the last thirteen years, and in many ways I think the memories of how Hull used to be hold greater power than the city it has become. I miss it, and equally I know that if I visited I would have those memories destroyed also. Very bittersweet, thanks for uploading Keith!
I remember the Hessle Road. We were visiting my uncle in 1960 who lived in Hessle! Took the bus and was struck by all the terraced houses. To me it didn't look too bad because I came from Glasgow and if you had seen the tenements of the Gallowgate and the London Road then Hull looked ok.

This fetchies memories back yes the smell from the docks you can never get rid of
I just love hull those where the great days i was born in abby street ho i love to go back in them days u could leave your babys out side your door no kidnapping no beggers asking for money 💰 you could leave your children playing in the streets those good old days are gone now horrible technologyv etc hessle road songs are so great to listen to and the pictures of the houses i feeo so relaxed watch your videos thank you keith 😅
I was born and brought up down Field St....
Born down Bean Street, 1 Industrial Terrace. Remember great (and dangerous) fun when they started demolition. Moved to Orchard Park. Thanks for the memories good stuff
Remember visiting my aunt and uncle in Gillet street in the early 60’s before they moved into a prefab.

Vintage google street view. I suspect that there is only one of those buildings south of Hessle Rd still in existence (Wassand Arms)
How nostalgic, I was brought up down Gordon Street, Boulevard, for my sins :)

no street trash laying around or weeds being allowed to grow in gutters ... in fact everything looks better cared for than today

I lived down rugby street till 1985 and the photo of rugby st isn’t rugby st as it wasn’t that narrow down there
@@shaunlee9627 the thing I remember most about Rugby St was a “wire rope” business towards Hessle Road end. Looking through the gates I always wanted to go in and look round. Both of my Nans lived down there 👍😀
They were the bast of times and the worst.
