Only just found these videos not in bad shape for a mk3 cav
It’s not to be fair, just around sills and arches the rest is quite good really. Hope you enjoy the videos. Have a good Christmas!
Yeah I was shocked at how good spring holder on rear axle was they used to rot i miss my 1.8 cav took some abuse
@ They are good cars I think, you can’t beat the 8V engines though that’s for sure. I assume yours was the single point injection. I don’t think they done a 1.8 multipoint
@Cavalier_Steve yeah single point was good as could swap rocker box out dump a 2.0 on and cause gearbox had long legs would fly lol also could drop ecotec lumps in had few novas with 2.0 lumps wedged in badged up as 1.2 merit too
Mate you can chat a lot now wonder you struggle with a twenty minute video 😂😂😂
Yeah I know right 😂😂 have a good Christmas
Id love another mk3 cav and wow thats some bodging thats been done nice to see ya doing it properly
Wow. Didn’t realise the mighty commodore made it over there! Great to see someone saving another Holden, even if it’s rebadged overseas
Yeah I forgot about Holden making these cars, I know you guys had what we call the MK2 Cavalier as it’s where the estate was born. Thanks hopefully I can get it to a good standard. Cheers.
I had this and yeah the aluminium fins of the radiator were so brittle after its 20+ years that they were no longer able to be cooled effectively by forward travel let alone the fan , good call
That’s a good point I bet they was rotten and wasn’t transferring the heat, good thing I changed it for a new one. Cheers.
farrrrrrr far too much yap pal. sheesh
Yep noted thanks for the feedback 👍
Subbed mate, I'm a sucker for an old Vauxhall or Ford from my youth.
Thank you, nice I hope you enjoy the future stuff.
Hi Steve, Thanks for the update, I enjoyed following your work. A wee bit of a set back at the end (I know all about them too), but I'm sure you'll get on top of that in short order. The great thing about you recording your restoration (apart from being able to share it with us) is you can always go back and see how things were "before". Keep up the good work, Cheers, John.

The more you dig......still, nice work to be doing it properly 👍
Thanks definitely the more I dig the more I find but it’s all goto come out that’s for sure. Cheers 👍
Hi Steve, all I can say mate is rather you than me it's always a risk to start removing old patchwork and panels from an older car as you can be opening a can of worms especially where you are working now on the car as there are so many different panels that come together there it's often difficult to know which part goes where, I hope you get it sorted mate and as you say it will take a bit of planning maybe looking at the other side will help🤔🤷♂cheers Steve👍
I dare not look at the other side that’s the same if not worse 😂 I will get there slowly! Just goto remember where it all goes! 😮cheers mate good to hear from you. Have a good Christmas if I don’t hear from you mate.
I'm sure you will get it done Steve but it's a slow unforgiving task, thanks Steve and a Happy Christmas to you and your family👌👍

Thank you, the Cavalier is well know as a Vectra A in Europe and it was the Ascona before that.
Hi Steve. Did you torque tensioner nut off camera?
Honestly I can’t remember, what I do remember is though, that I had to do of the bolts by feel as I couldn’t get the torque wench in with the socket on as it hit the inner wing.
Hello mate. I wanna change the rear sensor and idk wich lenght is good,i see some different lenght on sensors. I have a passat cc 2011. If u have any ideea. Thank you
I still have the old one in my shed (don’t ask why because I don’t either 😂) I Will have a measure up and let you know, I would like to think the CC and the saloon/estate there wouldn’t be any difference between them, but you never know. I will check when I next go out there and let you know. But please be aware what fits mine won’t necessarily fit yours. All the best with it though, should be a nice easy job for you to do. Cheers.

@@kevinwatson4043 thanks dad!
Hi Steve, well that was a fiddly bloomin job mate you did well to get the door card off with the door still shut which makes me wonder how you would open a door if you cant get the door card off🤔maybe use a jigsaw to cut a hole in the card or even the outer door skin🤭😂bit overkill me thinks🤷♂ Did you try squirting any penetrating oil onto the locking mechanism when you got the card off it might have saved a bit of fiddling trying to unlock it with a pick or screwdriver🤔great video and well filmed in a tight space👌👍
@@JohnWD40TC02 Hi John, yes it was a right pain, it was hot that day I done it and came down with a bad cold after that day. I know the B5 Passat’s had issues with there door locks, the motor wouldn’t turn and the door would stay deadlocked I was lucky a few years ago I hit the door and it was enough to unlock it, I fixed by taking the motor out and running it from a PP3 9V battery for about 5 minutes this sorted it out for many year after that. This is something I wished I had said in the video, is that if you sprayed the penetrating fluid over the lock it would have done the job I think 🤔 but I wanted to give a clearer view of what I thought was happening, oh well never mind it all came out well in the end, my dad thankfully hasn’t had any problems with the lock since then so that’s good 👍 cheers John.
Hello, I'm writing to you beacause I've got the same Cavalier but EU version. 2.0 100kW CDX from 1995 biuld in Luton UK. My question is do you know why my rear window and mirror heating does not work? The switch is not damaged because I checked its operation in another car but the light bulb in the switch does not light up. The air conditioning and recirculation switches operate normally and illuminate. I checked the fuse and it's not damaged. Do you have any ideas what to do? Is there a relay I don't know about?
Hello there, apologies for the delayed reply, I wanted to look at the wiring diagram and give you a detailed response. There are a couple of things to note about this particular circuit and that it needs the engine running and the alternator to be operating correctly to enable the rear screen heater to work (due to the high energy demand) First does the illumination part of the switch work with the rest of the dash lights this isn’t critical to the operation but does show that the switch has a good ground. As you have identified that Fuse 15 is good then we know we have a good feed (fuse 15 comes off terminal 30 which is battery positive so it’s on all the time) this feeds a time delay relay (K35) the relay will also have a terminal that is marked 30 this should have a positive supply constantly. Terminal 31 of the relay is a ground or negative battery connection so if you have a test light, connect the light to 30&31 of where the relay has come from and it should light up, if it does this proves that the relay is getting some of its power. Next check terminal 15 and 31 with your test lamp the lamp should only light when the ignition is switched on (engine doesn’t have to run for this) this is fed from a 20amp fuse, fuse 20 Terminal 5&8 are your switched outputs (this I think are ok) 5 is your mirror output and 8 is your heated screed output the indicator lamp for the switch is also fed from terminal 8 of the relay. Lastly you can do this last test by taking the switch out terminal 3 is supplied by the alternator D+ output. I could be wrong but if you put your test lamp on a positive supply of the battery it should light up when the ignition is on engine off and then go out when the engine is started and the alternator charging. I’m sorry if this is long winded but this is a summary of how the circuit works. Let me know how you get on and I will try and help more if I can. Cheers. And lastly there is a terminal marked E
Hi, i have a nissan march k12 and its overheating. The fan is kicking in however the top radiator hose is cold while the bottom is hot and the water in radiator is cold. Could it be thermostat?
@@shauncamilleri4795 Hi there, the fan is ECU controlled it looks at the engine temperature, the sensor is on the engine block hence why the fan is still kicking in and out. Are you getting heat from your heater inside the car?

Just stumbled across your video, not seen any others…..I’m currently restoring my 1992 Nissan pulsar gtir(passenger side needs abit of welding🫣and I’m on with it now)…..my choice of stuff I use is mipa epoxy rust treatment, upol zinc weld through primer, tiger seal(seam sealing)stone chip and eventually some sort of wax oil or Lanoguard. Was looking at the outer sill were the last persons done a lap weld, instead of a butt weld….the inner sill strength section made me cringe looking at it lol….😂
Hi nice car the Nissan Pulsar, mind you most of the cars from the 80s & 90s are the best in my opinion. Good for you for having ago at the welding I’m going to use tiger seal if it’s still any good. On inner sections, use ZINGA. I have a piece of steel panel has been outside in the salt spray (I live by the sea) for FIVE YEARS, no other paint, JUST ZINGA. ZERO RUST!!
Thanks for the recommendation, I will look into it, I really appreciate these comments as it helps others out as well as myself. Thank you. I think I see your original comment about the sills being very rusty inside, yes I agree with you I strongly suspect that they would be really rusty inside if I’m being honest with myself 😂 thanks again. Steve.
My k12 has this problem but it has this rusty oil in coolent and fan water is it blown head gasket ?
@@calvinparkes2031 It is possible that you have a head gasket fault, however if I was you I would flush the cooling system out with water until the water runs clear and then refill with coolant and see what happens. You can buy a head gasket leak detector that uses a chemical, I think it detects any CO2 gases in the coolant system. Good luck and let me know how you get on. Steve.
Nice video pal, ashame about that previous owners pigeon shit welding, it all needs cutting completely out and replacing, lots of rust convertor and zinc primer in between welding sessions, should make it last a few more years, 💪

@@x_x_x_x_x Thanks Alan, it’s slow going but getting there mate 😁
Hi Steve, fantastic video mate you are doing a great job on your Cavalier it looks a bit frustrating at times but doing this sort of work can be a total nightmare with panels not fitting, sometimes when you start removing old panels there is no telling what horrors lay beneath but this wasn't that bad mate I've seen a lot worse 😬 I did try to buy you a cuppa mate but for some reason it wouldn't work, after putting in my message and hitting the pay button then filling in my card details I got the usual verification (to make sure it's me) which sends me a text with a code but the code never came, I tried 4 times but nothing🤷♂don't know if it's possible to add a paypal link there mate, sorry Steve👍
Hi John, thank you, I intend to put more into this video but I didn’t realise how much usable footage I had (AKA me talking to much 😅) yes it is frustrating especially when you cut to much of the existing panel out along with making it up as I go along and unsure if my plan is the right way to go about it, but that’s what my channel is all about. Thank you for the Cuppa John, I’m sorry that you had troubles with the payment but I really appreciate the gesture, I have checked my account to make sure that there wasn’t 4 payments in there, I would hate to think that there was 4 unintentional payments that went through, it happened to me once a long time ago paying for a plain ticket’s 😬 I think the systems are a lot better now. There is a super thanks or something like that I have enabled on RUclips, now that I’m a super star 🤣🤣 I will look into the PayPal thing and see what they can offer. Thanks again John, you’ve made my day with your gesture 🍻
Do you think this is relatively the same job for a b7 2013 2.5 Passat S?
Hi, I’m not familiar with this engine, but I think your right in that it will be a very similar job to mine, there will be different components that you have to move out of the way to gain access to bolts and things all being well it should be fairly simple to see what needs to be removed in order to get to things. Good luck with the job though, and let me know how you get on. All the best. Steve.
Salute from ankara mate (vectra driver since 93)
Thank you, I love the Vectra B and obviously the Vectra A what generation Vectra do you have? If you don’t mind me asking.
Good job done Steve, I've been looking at our good friend Mr Google about doing the same on my SLK one good thing is that the oil filter is at the top of the engine under a plastic panel but it's a cartridge type and of course you need a tool to remove the top of the cartridge which aren't to expensive (this is my first ever car to have a cartridge filter which looks like a paper air filter🤔) looking at the oil spec for my car it says to use a 0W-40 full synthetic which to my old fashion brain looks like it could be thin like tap water 🤷♂I just hope it will be ok🤔 I'm not sure if I will be able to do the auto box oil as I'm sure there is a filter to change and from experience they are normally in the box so you have to remove the sump which wont be easy in my carport with only a jack😬🙄 One thing I have heard mentioned before and you said it in your video Steve, what is a "Ricer" 🤔I have no idea what that means so I must be getting old🤣cheers mate looking forward to the next one and sorry again for my stupid long comment👍
Hi John, I always enjoy reading long comments, trouble is I forget most of what I need to reply. Most modern cars have gone back to being a cartridge style oil filter, they was like this on much older cars before. Again most modern cars to take a thin oil they say it’s that they are much more advanced and have the ability to stay in between the gaps where oil is supposed to be. Again it’s for less drag on the engine so these will be more efficient as well, not to mention the oil ways can be so small now that a thicker oil can actually cause more problems, I always say go with the manufacturer’s recommendations, some manufacturers specify a thicker grade oil for hotter/colder climates, I’m not sure if this is still a thing or not though nowadays. Hmm I’m not sure what a ricer is myself other than it was boy racers that was in a Honda civic I presume much lower power than what’s perceives (if that make sense) for example making a standard SE model look like a type R but having the original 1400cc engine. I’m lucky and this Honda and my MK3 cavalier doesn’t have a filter just the magnet on the drain plug, but yes your right most gearboxes you have to take off the sump to get to the filter, they are the easy ones as some can be buried in the gearbox 😬 Anyway I hope I have remembered everything, so enjoy my silly long reply 🤣 Cheers John good to hear from you. Steve.
Good video steve thanks - i noticed you dont get the car on ramps for an oil change any reason?
Hi Alan, if I can get underneath without jacking the car up then I will do, it’s being lazy and also it’s nice and level to get all the oil out and put the right amount in as well. Plus ramps catches the bumper on this and most cars so I rarely use them. Cheers.
As a teenager I sprayed a motorbike using an electric gun meant for painting fences. First pass was polka dots. Second orange peel. Third was like a mirror.
Oh wow very nicely done 👍 sounds like you done an amazing job there. Cheers. Steve.
Will the faults dissapear automaticaly once I have changed the sensor or will I need a ODB reader to do that?
Hi, yes they should clear once you’ve driven down the road a bit once the problem has resolved, the code will still be stored in the system but this will have no effect on the drivability, just something to be aware of if you ever need the car scanned for whatever reason. All the best with it. Steve.
Good job, sir - interesting to know mine's not the only VW that waits until holiday to play up!
Thank you Pete, tell me about it, mine has always been reliable up until this point, at least I was still able to use the car though, and it was cheap easy fix. Cheers. Steve.
Hi Steve, another great video. I do appreciate why my local garage charged what they did to do ours. It is well involved, but you smashed it as always. Quick update on my Cav, she died in a traffic jam on return journey from Vauxfest. Had to close A1 at Grantham to get recovered, quite a day! 😅 Head gasket had failed, oil getting into cylinders. Ive since pulled the whole engine out for a complete refurb, dropped it off 2 days ago. I want to keep the original engine, and want to be able to do long reliable road trips so I'm splashing the cash. Lets see what they find when its opened up. 🙏😬 Hopefully catch up with you again next year when ive got her running again 😊
Hi Paul, oh no! I’m sorry to hear of your break down! Did the engine overheat or just lost power? Hopefully you will be up to scratch again and hopefully with restored power as well, sounds quite the ordeal having to shutdown the A1. Thanks Paul will you have ago at this yourself? You do save a lot of money doing this. Keep me posted on how your Cavalier is doing. Cheers Paul. Steve.
@Cavalier_Steve Hi Steve, once I split the engine I found the head slightly warped and oil tracking into cylinders. The fan switch failed in traffic earlier in year and it got hot. I think it started from there. It'll all be good though soon, like new I hope👍 I'm not sure Liz would let me tackle the vw belt, we rely on that car so heavily we can't afford for me to chip away at long jobs. If it was a second car, I'd be well up for it. I'll keep you posted on the Cav front 👍
Nice video, matey. I have a similar Passat, and I love servicing it. I'm just doing a rear wheel bearing tomorrow. It costs less than half the price of the garage
@@jaywhitney789 Hi Jay, thank you very much, I hope your wheel bearing goes ok for you, I've not had to do mine yet, so no video sadly. If you would like a challenge, then try a timing belt replacement, I have recently done this on mine and recorded a video that I uploaded a couple of weeks ago, and is't to bad of a job as long as you take it slowly, and you will save yourself a considerable amount of money as well to boot. All the best cheers. Steve.
@Cavalier_Steve Hopefully so, and thank you
Had one exactly the same as that C138JCP had it five years 1992 till 1997 traded it for a Peugeot 405 nice comfortable car but nowhere near as reliable as the caviler has it a year went back to Vauxhall mk 3 cav sri that was good motor to .
French cars do have very soft comfortable seats, yes the Cavaliers and Vauxhalls of the 80s-90s was very reliable, mine still are 🙂 Cheers.
Hi Steve, very interesting video mate I really enjoyed watching you change the cam belt it seemed to go quite smoothly as some of those transverse engines can be a right pain to work on. I think the last cam belt I changed was on my old Volvo 740 and about 2 months after I changed it it decided to blow it's head gasket🤦♂I did it myself and it was quite easy all I had to do was take the head to my local garage to get the head skimmed, it went back together very easily as there is so much room under the bonnet, mine was a 4 cylinder but they also chuck a V6 in that car as well🙄thanks mate👍
Hi John, these are challenging to say the least but doable, yeah transverse engines you typically need to take the engine mount off. That was annoying re you 740 but at least you could do the job yourself and get the head skimmed, there are so many modern engines where you can’t skim them anymore there tolerances are so tight now, to be fair though, I don’t think that HG failures as that common any more I think due to the warning lights along with the bings and bongs modern cars give. Cheers for the comment as always John I’m glad you found it interesting I think there was around 7-8 hours of footage in this one 😵Cheers mate.
I wouldn't want to do anything like that on a modern engine as the manufactures like to use all these fancy bolts and tools that you need to do the work, they just like to make it harder than it needs to be to stop people like you and I from doing it at home so they can pull your pants down charging the earth getting it fixed at a dealers🙄🤔 My SLK doesn't have a cam belt but good old Merc use a timing chain on these engines which seems like a step backwards, but saying that it's supposed to last the life of the engine but what if it doesn't and lets go at 70 or 80K miles on the clock that could cost to much to fix making the car a write-off💰😂 I do like these kind of vids mate but I realise it's a lot of extra work having to film them then hours of editing work so thanks for doing this Steve👍
I know which cars me and you would prefer to work on.
Tell me about it! All day to do a timing belt on this vs an hour on the MK2 Cavalier and I don’t have to Jack the Cavalier up!!!
Had a 1986 Cavalier Gli for years, my first car. Yes, that’s right it was an injection 😅. Solid cars had absolutely no issues. Performed all the maintenance myself. I’ve owned Mercs, BMWs, Porsche nothing gave me the pleasure as much as that £850 car
Very nice upgrade having the GLi I assume it was a 1.8?? I wanted one as my first car as well I was told that I wouldn’t get insurance on it, if only I knew about the 1.3 variant. They was good cars and still are in there own ways, although some people did have issues with there’s but I think this was the way they was treated with the previous owners. As you say they were so easy to work on and perfect for a beginner. Cheers.
Personally speaking I prefer the "fine detail", so keep up the good work Steve!
@@thelonegroover Thank you, I like to see detail as well especially in difficult areas that’s not so obvious on video or how the video was shot. Thanks for the lovely comment 👍
Purring like a kitten, we had them here in Australia called the Holden Camira JB.; plagued with problems (blowing blue smoke was one) until Holden got it right in the end with the last model 2.0 JE Camira. Mine had done 500,000 km's when I sold it; was a great car.
Thanks, I know Australia had these as the body for the estate was built there, I didn’t know what you guys called them though so that’s good to know. Yes they are good engines and 500K’s is very good 👍 cheers Kris. Steve.
Hi Steve I think the time lapse thing is a great thing many people do with their videos now, I'm going to maybe start doing it with mine as I tend to miss out recording the long bits, but that's what people want to see. I done a video the other day and absolutely everything went to shit lol I turned the camera off and just got on with it; some days are like that. Great work as usual on your cav, fiddly bit that corner, especially the bumper hanger bit that's a pain to try and get right unless you have a cut off or a template from another car, if you get it too proud or too far in the bumper doesn't sit/mount right. Good stuff anyway 👍
Hi Andy, thank you, I like the time lapses as it still shows what your doing whilst keeping the viewer engaged, that's the idea anyway, that way when stuff goes wrong you can show those bits if you want to. It's so frustrating when things go wrong but sometimes those videos can be more entertaining and people can learn from those mistakes or see how you come up to get round the issue if it's something like a sheared bolt or something like that. Keep them coming though Andy, working on cars is very annoying sometimes especially when things don't goto plan. Thanks for your support as always though mate, yes your right about the bumper hanger that's why I really wanted to use the old one m as I know it's right, I think rhe next video working on this would be interesting though... cheers Andy. 🍻
@Cavalier_Steve Hi Steve always only to happy to support your channel, your working on cavaliers so it's interesting to see how you approach more or less the same bits I've had to fix. Yeah I did tend to spend a lot of time editing out bits of my videos but I reckoned what's the point, need to include the warts n all! Sometimes they really go to crap though or I'm in a real rush and don't have the time to set up and think a bit more as you have to do when recording. Glad to see it's all progressing and look forward to catching up on your next videos :)
Hi, i have the same car and my problem is this: overheating sign after at least 1 hour trip when traveling on a hot summer day over 33C at 120km/h on uphill parts of a highway. After i stop and turn off the engine and continue with lower speed its fine.I have changed thermostat and still the problem remains. Also no coolant leaks.Furthermore i have changed a/c radiator a year now.Any thoughts? Thanks in advance
Hello there, This seems to be a common issue with these, as per the video really is the fan kicking in ok? And how is the heat from back of the radiator? is the top radiator hose much hotter than the bottom radiator hose? Does your temperature light go out when you run you interior fan on full and temperatures to hot? This takes around 5 minutes for the light to go out. See how you get on with these and let me know how you get on.
A very good video as always Steven keep up the good work from dad
Thanks Dad!!!
Nice to see another cavalier being saved I'm just about finished mine
@@cwe92 Thank you, well done! Not easy work is it! Do you have any pictures online of yours at all?? Cheers.
Tip: from someone who’s been in the game for 35 years you definitely want to use weld to spray on any plate that overlaps to form a seam, I use Upol Copper Weld To Spray some use Zinc but I find copper has the best anti corrosion properties, it’s not cheap but if you don’t spray up the surfaces it WILL rot through.
Thank you Noel, I thought the zinc stuff i was using would suffice, I have ordered a couple of tins of the upol copper weld, I will use that from now on. Thanks again for the tip, Kind regards Steve.
@@Cavalier_Steve no worries pal👍🏻👌🏼
