😬😂Sorry about that, they can be a pain if they’ve been untouched for ages. A little tip is to put a very thin film of silicone grease around the rubber seal that would help get it off for next time. Hopefully you got the job done ok though. Cheers.

Hi Steve great video mate, well with all those lights and fault codes it looked like the car was doomed😄 I was surprised that one little sensor cured the lot which is good news for you mate, 43mpg is pretty good mate I'm lucky if I get 18mpg around town in my SLK😭😆
I do like the Passat's my daughter had one a few years back now it was an older model but can't remember which one or it's age but it was a nice car hers was the diesel with an auto box. Cheers Steve🙏👍
Hi John, yeah it can scare a lot of people off I can imagine, yeah drove it to work still all ok which is great news! Yeah the 43mpg isn’t bad is it for a short run and some harsh breaking for testing purposes. I think I would cry at 18mpg although my MK3 Cavalier auto isn’t much better 😂 if your daughter had a B5 they was great cars the PD engine in those although a little bit agricultural where very good strong engines with good MPG as well I think by the B6 the Passat’s wasn’t as good the B7 is better although I have heard that they suffer with electrical issues, I don’t know how true that one is though. Mine has lasted to 60k in 7 years with no issues until this sensor going wrong. So touch wood, all good. Cheers mate. See you in your next spraying video. Cheers.
I think 43mpg is great, from what I can remember I think the SLK will do about 35-38mpg on a good run but around town it's not very good probably due to it having a supercharger on it but it's a fast car so you cant really have the speed and good mpg.

Yeah I would be interested in seeing the pictures John, I think most automatics especially up to the early 2000s liked to burn the fuel, these modern cars with the automatic boxes can be better than a manual, as they are always in the correct gear. Cheers mate.
Ok if I find them I'll send them over, yeah I've had a few auto's in my time and prefer them to manual, I had a lovely Volvo 240 GLE Auto great car but it was back in the early 80's so was only a 3 speed so wasn't that quick and it always sounded like it was struggling so the mpg was horrendous😅 same with the Cortina's they were all 3 speed but the SLK is a 5 speed auto and it's a lovely gearbox and will cruise at 70 while the engine is only revving at around 1800rpm
I bet your SLK is really good on a run, my MK3 Cavalier is the same exceptionally good on a run whilst being really bad on fuel around town. Like you say the 4 and 5 speeds makes all the difference, modern gearboxes have as many as 12 I believe 😮 The MK2 Cavalier automatic boxes also was a 3 speed while the MK3 is a 4speed with toque converter lockup on 3rd and 4th I’m sure many have that feature.

Hi Steve, I've went to replace the sensor today only to realise it is a snapped /loose wire leading to the sensor. You got any recommendations or part numbers for the wiring? Rear left
Hi Jordan, that’s annoying isn’t it! The easiest way to fix it is using a combination solder joint & heat shrink, these are quite good as they are a heat shrink that solders the joint and they even have glue in them to make them water proof, search for “Solder Stick Waterproof Solder Heat Shrink Butt Wire Connector Kit NT” they are only £8 for 50 of them, you don’t need anything to special to use these just a heat gun.
Strip the 2 ends of the wire approximately 2-5mm will do insert the bare wire into the solder section the silver stuff in the middle each end then use the heat gun to melt the solder/heat shrink and personally I would cover the repair with insulation tape to protect the joint from water.

I will see if there is a P/N for the wire but suspect that won’t be easy to change as it is likely to be part of a harness so may well be expensive as well.

How can you replace the brakes in this car? Also, how can you replace the motor for the water pump for the windshield?

Breaks: This is a job I plan on doing once they have worn down, the hardest part is the electronic parking break on the rear, even then there is 3 ways you can get round this as a DIYer.
1. You can remove the EPB motor from the calliper and use a star toque bit to wind the drive that the motor would normally drive.
2. you can apply an external 12 supply directly to the EPB one way would apply the brake and the other will unwind it. 3. Obviously you can use a scan tool this will be the hardest part for the DIYer if they don’t have one at all or one with bi-directional control.
To reset the EPB you apply the hand break twice I believe.
Windscreen Wash pump: I’ve never had to do this on my car, but I would imagine looking at it you need to remove the front bumper and you will see the the washer bottle and at the bottom would be the pump/pumps.

I had all the warning lights come on my 2010 vw golf , my speedometer had also stopped reading the speed , would a broken wheel speed sensor also cause this ? thanks
Hi Gareth, yes it's possible, I think that the speed comes from one of the front wheel sensors, I'm surprised with the technology on these cars it doesn't use one of the other sensors... if you can get the car scanned and that would tell you which sensor that's given up or if there is another issue thats causing the problem, in all honesty they are not to expensive around £25 each so maybe worthwhile doing both sides, they have done the same amount of work after all. The sensors are handed so you can't swap them from one side to the other for testing. Good luck hope you get your car sorted. Steve.
Thanks for the reply , I used a scanner and had the code u0121 lost communication with abs control module. It's been in the garage for 2 weeks now due to waiting for the a electrician to have a look , and they are not completely sure what's wrong with it due to how many warning lights I have on the dash , I have a flashing coil light , power steering light , abs , traction control, and the flashing red break light , no working speedometer and the fuel gauge was slightly moving up and down , I've been told it could be a faulty abs control module , I hope not because of the cost🙈
@@1760garethHi Gareth, U codes typically point towards a Canbus network issue your code does suggest that the ABS module does have a communications fault on it, that definitely explains why you have no speedo as the car wouldn’t know what speed your doing in this case. Sadly thought that’s why my experience ends, the garage maybe able to source a 2nd hand unit and code it to your car or if they can be repaired they can send it to a specialist for repair. Cars in the 90s didn't have wheel speed sensors. I don't ever remember thinking... gee I really wish my car had a wheel speed sensor, that would make my life better. We can ask the question, why do these sensors fail, but the better question is, why do they exist?

Officially yes, as if you would take the car like this it would fail the MOT, most likely under the dangerous category (due to it being the breaking system) what can happen is when you restart the car the fault would clear as at low speed or no speed the ABS module thinks everything is operating as normal like what happened with me, under normal light breaking, because one of the sensors thinks the wheel is locking up you can get unwanted ABS operation which can lead to much longer breaking distances whilst this is going on. As an example one day during that week I drove for 30 miles and everything worked as expected, however I was very careful to leave a very large gap between me and the car I front so I had distance to stop should the system play up again, on other days the fault either came in straight away or did so under the first operation of the breaks.
Once the fault is in you loose your auto hill hold auto parking break application (I think to release as well🤔) but breaking power was normal but if you was to get into a skid then you would have NO ABS assistants at all, something to be aware of if you drive the car. For completeness whilst the fault lights are on you shouldn’t get anymore issues during that trip. Legally though you should have the car recovered and fixed asap if proven that you drove the car like this and you was in an accident you would be held liable.

Hi Steve, thanks for the vid, (I have the same car) I had this fault a year ago and didn’t know what it was, took the car to garage and after plugging the car in told me it was the offside rear sensor, but they said the magnets in the wheel hub break down and had to change the hub, it cost me hundreds…. I have the fault again, started yesterday so I’m wiser now, I’ve just ordered a cheap OBD reader to find out which wheel, I’m hoping just a sensor will do the trick?
Your welcome, I'm pleased and hope that this will help you with your sensor, to be fair they are cheap enough and easy enough to replace even if its not the sensor, but from what I have read is these are a common replacement item any way, what your garage told you does have some truth, the B5 (Mk5) Passats used to have the the wheel hubs replaced this was due to rust around the reluctor ring used to make the ring come away from the hub and caused the failure, in that case yes you replace the wheel bearing hub, but i don't think our cars suffer with this issues.
the OBD Readers are definitely worth the investment as they will pay for them selves in one job such as this, the phone on i have seems quite good and it benefits from using an app which gets updated as technology advances, but they are cheap and you won't be able to get every code or issue detected but they are great for us beginners.

@@Cavalier_Steve Hi Steve, thanks very much for that info about the B5, I’m definitely going to change the sensor alone first, just need to know which corner it’s at, just a note for whoever else may read this, I ordered an OBD reader yesterday on Amazon, it came this morning and I tested the car and it said “ no fault registered” when I’ve looked the reader I bought does not read ABS faults!!!, it’s gone back today and another (double the price) is on its way, cheers again👍
@@rickyweird01 That’s a shame that, yes not all OBD 2 readers do ABS, I think that’s why I got the one I did, hope the new one will get you sorted out, I will see if I can find the one I have it was a long time ago that I bought it though.

Sorry not sure what you mean, if the sensor is stuck, try using penetrating oil on the back of the sensor and try turning it left to right to jiggle it out, in an extreme case you may need to goto the extreme and drill out the plastic part of the sensor, just try not to touch the metal though, then I would use some emory cloth or sand paper to clean the hole out before installing the new one.
If you mean the car being stuck there, you should still be able to drive it if the ABS is constantly activating without the system bringing recognising an issue then I would just unplug one of the easiest sensors that you can get to, this should definitely bring up a fault and disable the ABS to get you home. Hope this helps.
